It went pretty well last night, let's have another good Hip Hop General.

Some topics of discussion:

Been relistening to Pharoahe Monch's discography. I'd easily put him in my top 5, hes such a skilled mc, great songwriter, one of the best/most iconic flows, and his beats are great. His discography is fucking solid. The only album that isn't a classic is W.A.R, and even that one is still great.

Cold 187um and Above The Law have worked their way up to being one of my favorite all time artists

>*Favorite decade?
I'll have to go with the 90s

>*Favorite region?
Hmmm, I'm really enjoying Houston hip hop right now, but I love all the major cities

>*Most interesting beefs for you?
I'd like to hear more on the Bone Thugs/Three 6 Mafia beef that happened back then

>*Upcoming releases you're excited for
Idk, I'm really curious to see if SGP has really fallen off

>*Things you don't understand
Jay-Z... I've made shitstorms about this. His music is fine, but he has no amazing skills as a rapper, and really isn't the gangsta everybody makes him out to be. Plus I've never really like anything Roc-A-Fella had to offer, maybe one of you could shed some light on why you enjoy him so much. As far as a business in music standpoint, I think Dre has him beat

>*Unpopular Opinions
Maaan Too $hort is one of the greatest rappers to ever do it. His flow is on point and his realism is hilarious and dope. He once said in an interview "I could have been a better dictionary rapper than half the East coast abstract artists, but I wasn't going to do that, I was going to bring it to Oakland real" and I respect that. Imo he blows Biggie out the fucking water on "The World Is Filled", granted it's not Biggies best track and the beat is made for Short but still.

I haven't listened to it enough to pick up on a concept (which is a shame).

It does seem massively influential to early 00s and mid 00s hip hop. Atlanta was about to change to that real stanky crunk/trap rap with Lil Jon and TI and all them as was Memphis and New Orleans soooo, that's just where I see it in retrospect

6. The hype surrounding iLoveMakonnen. The guy, apart from a very succesful single with Drake and a couple good songs has literally nothing to offer, it makes Big Sean as an actually talented guy, which it isn't, Also I can't get the admiration for Eminem. I think (now this is just assumptions and what I've from Twitter and shit like that so I can be totally off base) Iggy just doesn't give a shit about hip hop culture and she's purely in it for the money. She's exploiting something I guess. I can see why people don't like that.
Now I'm not a fan of Mackelmore (music wise) I don't think he's doing anything wrong. He's just seems kind of dopey and "why can't everyone get along" when he talks about cops and shit like that I dunno.

I guess it boils down to people don't like it when people are "black" only when it's convenient

Modern trap and its artists are the worst thing to happen to hiphop ever. Everything Post-Gucci Mane is just ignorant, unoriginal shit. Literally all of them are just unoriginal, fakes, talking about shit they never did. Chief Keef just a mommas boy, never killed no one. In the 90's with all the mafiosa albums coming out, they would paint a picture with their lyrics with a dope beat produced by RZA or DJ Premo. Listen to Das Racist's 3 releases (Shut Up Dude, Sit Down Man, and Relax) first, if you haven't already. Before you move on to pure, unfiltered Victor Vazquez, I'd suggest listening to Kool & Kass' tape Peaceful Solutions as well; they're not as good a pairing as Kool and Heems, but it's a chill tape. Then, check out WORD OK, his solo album from last year. It's his most concise solo project, and it's got varied but cohesive instrumentals, as well as some great features (aside from the usual Greedhead/Mishka folks, Talib Kweli and Del appear). It's companion/outtake compilation NOT OK is also good, but not essential.

After that, if you've been drawn in, check out his numbered tapes (19, 63, and 51). They can get spotty, but if you like Kool's style and delivery they'll hit the spot. If you are really in love after those, he's got some pretty weird older material, namely THE ELECTRIC KOOL AD ACID TEST, which is pre-Das Racist.

Admittedly the songs themselves aren't the sole reason why I think Relax is their best release. I love the whole concept to it, like they're attack the idea of the 'debut album' by suddenly repeating their choruses into the ground (even more so than usual) and talking way more about money over beats that are way louder and more aggressive. It's like the whole album was designed to be befuddling to DR fans, rap listeners, and any who hadn't heard them before Relax. Kool puts it best, I think, in the album's opening verse:

"Negro please, I know I'm an idiot
But I got a schtick and I'mma use it a little bit
I'm not too sure if I should clue in the little kids
Or if I'm too clueless to move with the bigger fish
Why it gotta be those two and not some other shit?"
