Just listened to this for the first time. It was pretty enjoyable, but not a religious experience like people make it out to be.
Why do you love this album so much, /mu/? (A curious question, not an accusatory one. Call off the butthurt brigade)

>> No.53670962

I was relatively underwhelmed by the album the first time I heard it too, given it's rep.

It's a grower though. Keep revisiting the songs.

I love it because every time I listen to it I feel like I'm walking through the woods. It's a very nature-focused album, it feels organic. You know when you walk through the woods and it's never complete silence, there's always the rustle of trees, or the pattering of squirrels, or the crunch of leaves? There's that, plus this overwhelming feeling of coziness that's found exclusively by a campfire, and with the little crackles sprinkled over the album alongside Phil's whispery-singing voice, it feels like a very intimate album. It's almost as if every time I put on this album, I'm going on a hike with Phil and we're looking at and talking about mountains and stars and fires and trees and the moon and since I love being outdoors, camping, and hiking, I love this album.

But this sort of begs the question, is an album actually good if you don't think of it as such upon your first listen? You'll grow to like pretty much anything if you listen to it enough times.

You should look up some of his interviews. About how he doesn't believe in the concept of nature and how his albums aren't about it.

Also listen to the first track of clear moon. He explains everything really well.

>>53671483
Of course. Most pieces of art cannot be appreciated well the first time. The first listen says more about its accessibility than anything. Or at least how comfortable you are with the styling of the music.

None of my favorite albums were great the first listen. A couple I actually disliked. Sauna might end up being an exception if I end up liking it more. That first listen was fantastic.

>>53672577

Could you be a bit more specific what you/he means by that? How could he not believe in the concept of nature? It's, like, right out there.

The “natural world”
and whatever else it’s called
I drive in and out of town
seeing no edge, breathing sky

and it’s hard to describe
without seeming absurd.
I know there’s no other world:
Mountains and websites

The title of the song itself "Through The Trees Pt.2" also seems to poke fun at the nature aspect. Still looking for the interview though to link, but seriously listen to that song again.

This isn't the one I read but it's still pretty decent. He basically finds everything part of the same world, nothing is exempt. And the concept of nature kind of partitions a part of the world off from us and acts like humans aren't a part of it. Kind of the whole "mountains and websites" line.

What? No. You've got it all wrong. 'The Glow pt. 2' is just the prequel, along with the previous albums which you should definitely listen to in chronological order if you want any of this to truly make sense.

'Mount Eerie' is where the religious experience begins. And dear god, what an experience it is...

It also helps to get to know just how Phil Elverum's mind works by reading up some interviews. He's an unusually introverted guy.

He's modest, but not really introverted (although he does prefer smaller shows). Read his twitter some.
Also, after worshipping that album for a long time, I can safely say it's overrated.

it just has this warm feeling that makes it seem like im one with nature and living a life of contempt but have this occasional melancholy vibe if that makes any sense

I'm not even in this argument, but I'm sick of people like you who think that, just by quoting an essay (that you probably haven't even read) that is a subjective, single perspective, you have some kind of authority in the conversation.
You're an idiot pretending to be a smart guy, and it shows obviously.

lyrics seem to dissolve the separation between the "natural world" and any other world you might consider opposite that. so it seems he has, not necessarily a respect for the natural world, but an acceptance that it is no diffferent from the computer im typing this on. Mountains and websites.

THIS. (In my opinion) Phil's albums have for the most part all been great, but I've never liked any of them on the first listen. Of course if you're not into his style you're just not into it, but his albums are the type that get better the more you listen to it.

as others have said, it's a perfect example of an album that grows on you. i don't think anyone fully appreciates it when they first listen to it. i thought it was boring at first and now it's one of my favorites of all time. it requires conscious listening to get into

it's kind of like this...every time you listen to it you appreciate it in a different way, something you took for granted or hadn't noticed on the previous listen. it's a really thick album that way. then when you listen to it again you have the first thing you appreciated in mind plus a new one. it keeps stacking with each listen, culminating into one big lofi snowball. and then you understand why it's so acclaimed

>Religious experience

Hardly, for me it's anything but a religious experience, closer to a humanistic and beautifully natural and organic experience, reaffirming my connection to the world and life around me, that I am very much apart of the world and belong here. that's like the complete opposite of a religious experience.
