Post the tracks you're working on, discuss general music composition. Learn about music production software and techniques and talk about production-related gear.

First of all get to know a handful of basic plugins really well, get to know how they work inside out for your basic delay, reverbs, compressors etc along with your DAW know how the basics you use work or again get to know it inside out.
Next spend years fucking around making stuff you enjoy. Work out your basic work flow, where do you normally start? For instance if you start with making beats have your DAW setup so that all the drum tracks are already on the channels along with your basic effects you use for drums same goes for your sampler if you use that for beats, make sure it has multi outs and put your effects on each out. Do the same for all your other instruments. When you feel like getting an idea down open up your DAW and everything should be set up and ready to go so you can get straight into your workflow.
Most importantly the more you write or use your daw and make music the better you will get you will naturally start to build tracks repetitively and over time you will create a style doing so.
I have mates that put in 8 hour days every day for years working in their studios when they first started, now they know their set up so well they know exactly what they are doing when they go to write a track, they know exactly what reverb and how much they want on their kick drum, they know exactly what sample they want and where to put it in the track. They work with minimal amounts of plugins and hardware but they know how it all works and the same with the synth sounds and sample selections. Sample library's have been built over the years, edited like crazy and all the weak samples cleaned out.
Keep it minimal, select a few good plugins and learn them well, same with gear, samples and your DAW. |

But you've clearly got an ear for grabbing samples and using your tools to your advantage.
well you know the "rapper voice" thing is a problem alot of non-black rappers have. I don't actually know the solution, but people like macklemore and Mia and Eninem really have their own unique vocal timbre/sound, so it works for them. practice rapping more? try imitating other rap voices until you develop your own? idk man. even sugarhill gang had weak delivery sometimes, so you'll make it eventually, I'm sure. |

I'm actually not a bad actress, but I don't have anyone to help me, so it's gonna be very very simple stuff, honestly, more pandering hyper/pseudo/false-artier stuff, than a "legit" music video I think.
>>53635550 okay, I see, I see. where do you get those random people from? >>53635615 thanks anon. Adobe lightroom? got it. simple explanation for the uninformed while I go find a crack? hahaha |

it's called a flow
you don't "have" it, you have to earn it. you have to practice it, same as playing an instrument.
guitar arpeggios in metal music is really good analogue to this. it requires a lot of practice, it's not something you are born with or something you learn when playing blues. you have to strictly practice that and only that to learn it, but when you do, mang, the sound.
try imitating other rappers' flow. pick someone who has an interesting flow over beats similar to yours, try to imitate. soon, you will put your own spin on the flow, and it will be no longer copied, it will be yours. |

I'm trying to get the right tone for my drum and bass growls, I've got almost every aspect of DNB/neuro production down except the right kind of distortion. I really don't want that excessive distortion but something filthy that really has a lot of punch in the mid range - in the style of Annix, Noisia, Billain etc.
As of now it feels like I've tried everything, pic related. Filtered overdrive in the upper range is ALMOST there but it tends to kill that mid range "body", even at very low settings. Trash 2 doesn't jive well with me - I understand it's a powerful tool but it's so extreme, it's either a fairly ordinary distortion unit or it's just extremely fuzzy and grainy and kills all definition. I've tried filtering it, automating the filters, using the convolve and dynamics settings and it tends to add a bit of grit but there's just too much tail for a proper bark. Same with "amp" emulations.
So far the best results I've gotten is from using The Rocket with the decadence setting and impedance at 100%, but it doesn't quite jump at you.
What I then do is use Ozone or Plugin Alliances Harmonic Distortion / Exciter tools - I usually end up with too much high frequency noise.
I even sent all the growls into an aux with an extremely high passed bit reduction unit to try and add some high frequency definition without ruining the sound. Tried all kinds of reverb as well.
I usually end up spending hours in Ohmicide or Trash 2 without a negligible improvement over a basic high filtered Overdrive setting. Any suggestions? |
