Is the only reason Aesop Rock isn't talked about on here often because he's a white rapper and a jew?

Because he's talented as fuck.

>> No.53568453

because he requires effort to decipher his lyrics, and lazy people justify their bad taste by saying he spouts bullshit.

This so much. I've had people complain that listening to him requires a thesaurus, and while some of his lyrics can be a little too abstract at times, I think he's a wonderful lyricist.

Aesop is amazing. He has made his own field in Hip-Hop, and in music general. I enjoy listening to his lyrics. It's exciting and surreal and personal and so unique.

"Wrote a poem for every planet
Tracked their mileage from the sun in an envelope
Licked it, stamped it
Got eight thank yous in the mail, but nine planets means there's one left
Only the earth would thank me later with a breath taking sunset" - that is one of his simplest but it amazes me as well. Aesop is God

seriously, taking a bunch of words that sound similar and throwing them together has even less artistic merit than postmodern art. It's not even interesting nonsense, like how bon iver's flume is. it's just reading a thesaurus.

Agree completely. The guy is a fucking master. I can understand if people don't like his music, but most people explaining it by claiming he's saying random bullshit and not saying anything. Pretty funny because they're usually the same people who will defend some of the genuinely shitty rap lyrics and project dimensions into fucking Kanye, and then can't handle 9th grade English class tier literary analysis.

I could see why you'd say people project dimensions into Kanye. Personally I have moments where I'm waffling over how aware he is. But he does have this obsessive need to fully convey the vision that's on his heart, often at his own expense. That's what my favorite artists do. He strives for an immediacy that is real and complex and unresolved, without intellectual distance. It's almost similar to the type of rawness I feel from Daniel Johnston. Also Kanye is a master of the big-picture, finished product.

I really like Aesop Rock a lot, mainly because his wordplay has a billion delightful moments. He drops these insightful lines that you have to untwist, and they're legitimately clever and exciting. He pushes himself toward a unique, ambitious type of mastery in rap lyrics. He has thousands of brilliant moments. I also really like when he produces.

That being said, I do find Aesop's holistic approach lacking in some ways. His delivery sounds forced sometimes. Occasionally he does corny little things that sounds like cringey nods to legit hip-hop. Some songs sonically feel too ramshackle. He's prone to use more words than necessary. The beats are not generally super dynamic. Some of these things can be endearing, but he doesn't embrace his crappyness the way Kanye embraces his crappyness. Aesop tends slightly toward that air of seriousness that makes people look a little silly at the end of the day.
