'Sup /mu/

I'm at college in Berlin this year and decided it would be a good time to start listening to vinyl, given that Berlin has some incredible vinyl shops and a thriving music community.
Being a broke student however, my options were limited, so I ended up buying one of these for around €100 (see pic).
Four months in and I'm bloody sick of it. It seemed great at first but now it just skips constantly and there's a constant buzz whenever I play a record, plus some of the skips have left lasting damage.
So here are my requirements for an upgrade:
-Circa £150 new/used
-Compact (need to take it back home in the summer)
-Belt driven
-Built in pre-amp
Recommendations?

I'm not sure if this is b8 or not, but if it isn't...

Don't. Just don't. If you buy any kind of portable/cheap record player you will get universally shit sound and it will completely fuck up any vinyl it touches. For turntables which give acceptable sound and don't break your shit, you're going to be paying at least £200 (used not recommended for newer players), it will probably come without a pre-amp and will require hooking up to a proper stereo system.

I pretty much did the same as you
Got to Uni
Bought a Crosley
Discovered it was shit
I recently purchased a Pro-Ject Essential II second hand for £130, and I absolutely love it.
Not exactly easy to bring home though, and neither is the amp and speaker system. Basically, if you want a decent sound system it can't be portable as far as I know.

Not b8 sadly, I got all giddy with the idea and bought the first player I saw.
I'm going to put together a better system when I get back home, but at the moment I want something to just play my records with minimal set-up so I can enjoy the ones I already have.
I know that nothing compares to a proper set up, but that's going to have to wait for a few more months.

>>53544263
I was looking into those, I've got a fairly decent set of Bose speakers so I wouldn't mind just hooking it up with a 3.5mm jack at present.

OP, record players aren't cheap and they aren't portable
i don't recommend college students getting into vinyl for these 2 reasons
wait until you've graduated and settled down somewhat

this guy doesn't know what he's talking about

I just want it for casual listening, I'm not at the full audiophile spending thousands on a system level just yet. I basically just need a stop gap, I wouldn't mind selling it before moving home and buying another one.

Well the Pro-ject wont fuck up your LPs (quote me if I'm wrong) but I hooked mine up to a Marantz PM5005 amp and two 3ft high speakers.
If you're not at least prepared to move an amp, the turntable, your small speakers and your records too and from college then you'd best leave vinyl for home instead.
Also, I agree that it's better to do after graduation, I just started now because I'm an idiot .

Perhaps my year abroad wasn't the best time to start in hindsight, looks like I'm just going to have to slog it out with this shitter until I get back to the UK then.

Stop using the Crosley
Just go by your digital collection for now

Means missing out on a lot of the one off house and techno that you get here though. Tempted to just order something better now.

You don't have to stop collecting
See if you can find a friend with a turntable, so you can check what you buy.
I'd just rather there were less people ruining LPs with those things.

It's not ideal I know, I only saw the reviews after I'd bought it.
Long story short, I got some money and decided to buy the first thing I saw.
There's a Pro-ject Elemental for £159 on Amazon, think it's worth it?

Just buy some nice fucking speakers. Stock up on vynisl if you want and take them back home with you but you have no reason to own a record player right now. Fucking hipster retards.

>> No.53544701

>>53544384
my answer's still the same
there's nothing portable about record players and record collections
if you want to keep buying records, fine, but take them back to mom & dad's house when you get a chance
use an iPod at school

>>53544641
It's probably a good quality turntable but even so you'll still need a big heavy arse amp to run it

Calm down, just asking for some advice.

Everything I said was completely true.

>>53544585
This, you can keep collecting records but you should sell the ones you've played on the Crosley. The damage might not look bad but wearing out the grooves causes far worse sound deterioration than scratches.

>>53544641
Don't go for the Elementals, if you really really literally cannot wait to get a player buy a Debut or a Rega and a cheap (~£150) receiver.

That bad huh?

>> No.53544805

Just grab all the vinyl you can while there, anon. Then when you get home you can enjoy it all on a proper set-up. Plan for the future.

This seems like a much better option now, preserve the ones I have and build up a collection for later.

Put it this way - I used to run a PL-990 which while nowhere near as bad as a Crosley still didn't have a proper counterweight. Everything I played on it took quite a bit of inner groove distortion (IGD) damage and I now plan to replace the whole collection int he long-term.

I'm still picking up bits about the technical side of things, was planning on heading to the music store nearby to see what players/advice they have.
One thing's for sure, I'll probably be selling this thing in the very near future, it did it's job of getting me interested in vinyl and now it can fuck right off.

Got some cheap old techics, mate, like SL-Q2 QUARTZ

I'll have a look, don't really trust buying things online so I'm checking Craigslist and Gumtree

>> No.53545535

Well thanks to everyone that posted.

Plan for now is to stop using the Crosley immediately and find a decent used turntable.
Failing that I'm just going to collect some more records, wait until I'm back in the UK and start building a proper set up.

But, to summarise, fuck the Crosley Cruiser.

>> No.53547628

Question, I've got a cruiser (It was a present and I feel kinda bad replacing it so soon after getting it)
I've built up a fairly sizeable collection of stuff I really wanted and I probably haven't played any of them more then 5 times, but all atleast twice I would say.

Those 2-5 spins on the Crosley, that hasn't fucked them up beyond repair, right? I can ride this out for a couple more months until I deem it right to buy a decent TT (will upgrade it before the summer forsure)?

>> No.53548402

The best value for money are Japanese brands from the 80's and 90's. Think Akai, Pioneer, etc.
C.E.C or C.D.C is a generic brand that built a lot of marantz and technics tables so they are really good without the price.

>> No.53548459

I don't get why people decide to start buying commodity formats when they clearly don't have or aren't willing to invest the money.

If you want to listen to music for less than several hundred dollars, just buy the fucking CDs, or download the mp3. Whatever turntable and speakers you purchase for less than a few hundred bucks isn't going to sound any better.
