seriously though, it has a lot of catchy songs, a real energy, absolutely great, intricate production, very versatile vocals, dramatic pacing, the mandatory ballads, and of course a cohesive storyline filled with interesting commentaries and themes (for a mainstream rock album) and a strong visual identity.
In line with the music videos made for it, it's a lot like a curiosity cabinet, it's full of little details and oddities juxtaposed and arranged together in a theatrical manner, I find it fascinating. of course, Trent is behind a lot of it, but the lyrics and visuals are equally rich. |

It isn't meant to be the heaviest, darkest shit out there, it's supposed to be a kind of over-the-top, grimy and creepy parody of glam rock, where the sassy lisp exhibited by many glam rock vocalists becomes lascivious and obscene, the poppy energy turns into manic, obsessive anger and the self-indulgent pathos turns into disgust and bitterness. The goal isn't to create a mind-bending, horrifying assault of the senses, it's to make you witness the rockstar phenomenon falling apart. |
