>Using meme terms like backpambient

Why not just use the correct term, which would be "stepping stone artists" in this case. They may not be the pinnacle
of the electronic genre (like Boards of Canada are), but they still serve the purpose of helping Top 40s listeners transition over to music with more depth.

Or do you actually feel empowered by putting others down?

No, I just listen to good ambient.

Cluster, Arvo Part, Eno, the list goes on. Tycho and all of those mentioned in the op is just ambient for people that don't like ambient. Literally the Mumford & Sons of ambient.

Once again, you're making blanket statements with nothing to back it up with. I used to be a big Tycho fan back in the day.
It's what eventually got me into artists like BoC and Tangerine Dream. I no longer listen to Tycho, but I'm not gonna put down people who still do.
You're coming off as very immature, m8.

Christ. if you want people to discover better music you should just talk to them. We all started with shit taste and expanded.

I said "bands like this" meaning I like the genre and wasn't shit posting saying "OMG TYCHO". Pandora and iTunes radio is limiting.

/mu/ gets this reputation for being edgy hipsters with a smug complex for this shit.

I am writing all of these bands down, and expanding my knowledge on this snow day.

I don't mind having "shit taste" to start with because I want to get better.

Other classic artists you should listen to are Kruder & Dorfmeister, Tosca, Healer, Nordlight, Noiseshaper, and Air (Moon Safari).

In my opinion, dubby reggae-inspired ambient is the most relaxing, but I like spacelike stuff too. Global Communication is probably the best example of the latter.

If you like the SOTL's style of ambient (drones, with swells). Definitely check out Willamette. They have two albums that are top notch. Same two brothers are also in the ambient group Northern which is worth looking into.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIvlCLYgIT8|

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma has a lot of great ambient albums, encompassing from noise and shoegazey textures to pure drone bliss. Check out Bloodstream Sermon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E86NBqyiw4g

Another great group is Rameses III and their offshoot Padang Food Tigers. Great minimalist ambient with nature field recordings and sparse folk instrumentation.

if you like SotL definitely check out Kyle Bobby Dunn's newest album, here's a track from it
https://soundcloud.com/kylebobbydunn/boring-foothills-of-foot

for incredibly pleasant drones to zone away to there's David Tagg, i've never seen him mentioned here but his stuff is great plus it's all name your price on his bandcamp (i'd recommend Waist Deep Seas of Milk & Fundamentals of Orchid Biology)
https://davidtagg.bandcamp.com/

Hakobune is also pretty good, he has a metric ton of releases but i'd recommend last year's Seamless and Here the most out of them all
https://hakobune.bandcamp.com/album/seamless-and-here-2

Pausal has already been mentioned but i just want to say that Autumnal is a seriously overlooked release of theirs and also their best
