When CLT took down Hampus, he was the new Patrician on /mu/.
Who is the new patrician now that CLT is gone?

A patrician is a person who consciously approaches music and music evaluation with a reflective, analytic, and introspective mindset. This isn't because music is "serious business", and he or she is as likely to listen to music for pure enjoyment as anyone else, but the patrician has a natural intellectual curiosity and consciously acts on it. It's not enough to know what music is good (ie what music he enjoys), but also _why_ that music is good, what makes good music distinct from bad music, and whether there are qualities shared by all good music(ians) or all bad music(ians). A patrician craves stimulating conversation, especially with those who disagree passionately and argue their positions skillfully, and despises intellectual laziness; shallow or empty praise of a patrician's favorite music provokes as much contempt as shallow or empty praise of godawful music, if not more.
A "plebeian" is the exact opposite. While the musical preferences among individual plebs vary as widely as music itself, all are easily identified by obvious tendencies and behaviors stemming from inner conflict between the compulsion to maintain a self-image of being "really into music" and a stubborn refusal to act accordingly. The pleb is threatened by critical discussion, openly hostile toward anyone who presumes an authoritative position no matter how legitimately, and rankles at any suggestion that he look inward to inspect his own biases or assumptions about music, or even that he has any biases in the first place. |
