Left is what I generally use. Tortex XL Jazz III.

The other two are gifts from some mineral shop. Middle is petrified wood, right is agate. Agate is dope for getting a little bit more of a twinkly sound, but the petrified wood is shit

When you have the creepy nails it is in a way. Mine like to break on things. At least they aren't making fun of how most pickfags only use two fingers when they try to play fingerstyle.

Speaking of which, getting steelfags to play a classical is pure entertainment. I didn't realize the amount of technique it took to not sound like dogshit until I passed the beast off. All those dead strings and buzzing.

A pick is just another tool to get a different tone out of your instrument, like a new pedal or a change of pickups. I think that when learning to play bass you should use your fingers but when you are comfortable with playing your instrument then I think experimenting with a pick is fine.

For a bass it doesn't do much to add any punch, at least not compared to playing at the bridge and fucking with your pickups. You lose the versatility of double stops and a wide range of tones you can produce.

>> No.53158977

You have raised some good points. I do think a good bass player should be able to change their tone just by using their hands but I disagree about adding punch. I feel like when I use a pick it sounds a lot more aggressive and usually it's louder. Though it could be argued that I just play more aggressively with a pick as opposed to the pick making me sound more aggressive and it requires less effort to pick than to pluck your strings harder.

There's so many variables like the strings, the guitar, how you play, the size of your hands and what you prefer in a pick that you can't really make a decision that way.

Mostly playing fingerstyle on nylon, when I play something else, I want a pick that does something I can't so I go for rock hard monstrosities an inch thick for most things or play with the flat side of anything else when tremolo picking. For bass I use a 50 cent piece because it's the only thing that doesn't sound inferior to fingers.

Because of my acidic sweat, I go through strings twice as fast, and the turtles disappear from my picks. It sucks because the turtle fades out before the pick deteriorates.
