i cant play any of the guitar solos i like. im not talking about van halen or steve vai or something.

im talking like Rush.

The only solo I can play at full speed with no mistakes is James Hetfields 'nothing else matters' solo because its a joke.

ive been trying to learn Rush Fly By Night solo and I realize how bad I am at guitar.

ive had my guitar over 14 years but i say ive dedicated 2 yrs straight to it.

is there some trick to playing solos that i dont get or should i just give up.

i dont take lessons or anything btw.

i can play about half this solo SLOW until it goes to the bends an faster part towars the end.

when i play any solo, not just rush, it sounds so mechnical and shittty

You learn solos by playing it sloooowwww. For a long time. Over and over again.

I wish I could offer more advice, but that's pretty much the only way to learn anything complicated. Become as familiar as you can with every nuance. Failing that, maybe take a few steps back and review your guitar playing technique. Youtube (or preferably a teacher) can sort that out.

No matter what, don't give up in frustration or anything.

thanks but it just feels like thats one area i have never progressed on guitar.

i can do chords
i can do barre chords
i can tremolo pick
alternate pick

but i cant play any solos i like. even something like Santana shit sounds so mechnical i hate myself that i butcher it.

i was proud of myself when i learnt that nothing else matters solo but I have not progressed from that.

Is This Rush Solo too hard or do I have to do it even slower?

It was easy for me cause I started by learning solos and intricate stuff before everything else, but don't try to play things slow.
Just a recommendation.
If you play them slow, you're gonna have to then learn how to play them fast again, and it's just gonna mess you up.
Try real hard to get it. Really hard. And you'll get there.
How old are you anyway? And do you play any other instruments?

26. i got my guitar when i was 12 and only played it on an off.

a guesstimate of my dedication to the instrument would be about 2 years.

i only play guitar.
