And of course Ensiferum is better. The first Ensiferum album is incredible, with amazing melodies. The first two songs alone (Hero in a Dream and Token of Time) are better than Protest the Faggot's entire career.

I like the stuff but it's usually too pentatonic, not as focused on melody, not as folksy as the Nordic stuff, and too "heavy metal" for it to be a substitute. Also the production of the '80s sucked balls.

There are some gems but I find the genre overall to be dissatisfying. A lot of generic stuff, too many minor key melodies, not enough focus on the guitar, etc. I have to rebuild my PM collection. Bands I like: Falconer, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Helloween, etc.

I prefer stuff like this Manegårm but it has growls.
