Should music be enjoyable /mu/? Or if you are enjoying a piece it means you have already taken all you could from it and its time to move on?

>> No.53041350

Even by /mu/ standards this is truly retarded.

Well, let me try to elucidate what I mean.
You can experience something that you are used to musically and hence requires no effort to enjoy.
You can also listen to something that you find hard to listen to, that your ear is not used to.

I'll give you a few analogies.
You can read john grisham or Kant.
You can watch a Michael bay movie or a tarkovsky movie.

I have not read a John Grishem novel but I have watched transformers.
It's popular to say transforms is dumb(it is) but it does deliver visually complex scenes and action sequences.
Many People like it and pay money to see this.
Its mindless fun versus the "hard" enjoyment of working hard to understand something you find hard to understand.

In music's case its listening to novel stuff(for you) that you are not used to.
Instead of listening to an album or song 10 times, listen to it just until you feel completely comfortable with it and move on.

I am asking, is it worth listening to music past that first time you feel comfortable with it or is that as "dumb" as watching trasnformers..

I like the people posting about this as if this is some crazy thing to talk about.
Guys, you are either the retards yourselves or just incapable/unwilling to give a question, that you perhaps didn't ask yourself(recently or at all), 30 seconds of thought. But keep on posting dumb pictures with single sentence replies. Also post your contact details so we can express to you how superior you are to everyone else and good job shunning anything you think is a bit unusual. The cultural police thanks you.

Music is like any other art form, from movies to sculpture. If you don't enjoy it why are you wasting your time on it?

Well I didnt mean to sound vague. By taking everything I meant your ear getting used to it. You get the novelty and than it stops being novel.
Would you look at copies of a painting or go look at other paintings.
Please, If you can, articulate it in an actually intellectual way.

Ok fair enough.

I guess that (assuming you're serious about this) this comes down to a difference in personality. There are paintings that I will honestly never tire of looking at no matter how many times I see them, pic related. That doesn't mean I have no interest in seeking out others that I want to look at but I can see no validity whatsoever in dismissing something as "having taken all I can from it."

The same goes for music.

Well I never really said one should dismiss it(not exactly sure what that means within this context).
You have X amount of time to appreciate art and absorb as much of it as you can, broadening the borders of what you consider to be art and of your collection of ideas and ways of looking at life.
Looking at the same picture or listening to that same album or song you listened to a while back, that might hold sentimental value, is something we all do but we also eat junk food even though we know its trash food and unhealthy.
We all know why we should do good things but we sometimes cant stop ourselves from doing things we consider to be bad.
We give in to temptation.
Should that be valued? It can be accepted that people are all flawed but should it be encouraged?
Likewise should it be encouraged, within a music loving community, to listen to the same thing over and over again or should the ideal be exploring as much different music as you can? If so what is the point at which you stop listening to a certain album or track or song..

Im of course not trying to come with rules for /mu/ or any community or individual, its a hypothetical question.

>what is the point at which you stop listening to a certain album or track or song

This is what I was referring to as dismissing it. I just can't get my head around why you'd stop listening to something you enjoy. How can "giving in to the temptation" of listening to an album you like ever be considered a bad thing?

The junk food analogy doesn't work for I'm afraid. It's not like listening to Mezzanine 5 times a week is going to clog my arteries.

Its bad for you from the stand point of cultural enrichment.
Take the extreme case of only listening to one song your entire life.
Some people think, for example, that all they need to do is read one book(the bible).
In essence listening to the same music over and over again can be seen as lazy.
Like, again, watching the same movie or reading the same book.
You do it cause its easy and familiar, instead of challenging yourself.
