How do I get into art music?

I don't mean classical, I mean the music so many patricians talk about that is different than all the "popular music" that /mu/ talks about.

I can't find any charts for art music albums or websites for it.

Are you talking about polystylism? or classical 21st century music?

Start at Philip Glass and John Adams but they have a following. So...

I just always see these people who come into threads about albums /mu/ likes and saying art music is better and that it's made by people who actually know music theory or something. They never go into much detail, but they seem to imply that it's this whole separate genre of music, and I want to get into it.

What book(s)? What names/terms?

No, I think "classical music" is made in other areas of the world. Chinese and Japanese classical music falls under the description set by most musicologists.

But really, i think the term is very elitist. Why is stuff like Jazz not art music? it is based on written notation of music, and classical music also has improvisation, so what excludes it?

Jazz is popular music made for (live) entertainment and record sales.

It might be art, but its not Art Music.

>> No.52779141

>>52779118
That page not only mentions "art music traditions of several different cultures around the world", but also the social elitism associated with the term.

But wasn't western classical music made for entertainment, to be played to audiences? Didn't most composers have a patron, who supported them finacially?
Dvorak's Slavonic Dances were made to be sold to be played on the piano, the orchestral versions were released later. How is that not made for sales?

>> No.52779394

>>52779116
Folk music with a rudimentary notation system is not the same thing as art music.

>>52779173
>Didn't most composers have a patron, who supported them finacially?
Look up the definition of "popular" and you will find that this is irrelevant.

>> No.52779575

>>52779394
>rudimentary
It's the same system used in classical music, used the same way, written for the same instruments. Think of great compositioners like Monk and Ellington. What makes it rudimentary?

I still don't see how some music is made more for entertainment than other music. I think artists/works should be more individually judged as art/popular music instead of basing it on predefined genres.

>> No.52779621

I was referring to East Asian "classical music". Jazz has a better claim to the label.

"art music"

What a stupidly vague concept. It's almost as if it's getting passed around with the intention of trolling dumb faggots on a Mongolian planned parenthood pamphlet.

>> No.52779699

Most classical was indeed basically "shovelware" made either for dancing and similar occasions (if nobles were paying for it) or for religion purposes (if church was paying). Of course people who make a living off of peddling classical music ("surprisingly" mostly jews, especially these days) try to brainwash the masses from birth into thinking it was some high art.
