I could go full Sartre here, but let's just sum it up in that it's basic human behaviour to crave recognition and attention from other humans, to verify themselves as being human. So, when a person, who might not have been getting along in other social circles, suddenly gets invited warmly in a community, that person will change immensely just to fit in, because of the acceptance of those new peers. I'm a living example of this, though with the brony fandom, not furries. I'm not really in it anymore, but it really filled a void in my life, by having people to talk to. The fandom is just the shell of basic human social needs.
