Ok so I just came into $2000 dollars recently. I've decided to save half of it and spend the rest on gear. First purchase in going to make is an avatar 2x12 (vintage 30's) to use as a multipurpose cab. That will leave me with 550 left. I'd like to buy a 335 esque guitar. I'm thinking about copping either an epiphone dot or 335 pro (Sheraton's have really narrow string spacing IMO). Then replacing the pickups with PAF's. This sound like a good idea?

Neck-Thru Construction
11-piece neck (Maple, Mahogany, Amazakoe, Wenge))
25.4" scale
16" fretboard radius
Ebony fretboard
Seymour Duncan SH-6 Bridge

I mean, if you don't really have a use for the AXE-FX, go for it. I feel like the Mayones will be worth more money in the long run.

Like, several years from now, you'll be able to get more money for the it since the AXE-FX will probably be seen as outdated.

Can you survive without the Axe? How much of your playing/writing/gigging is dependent on it?

It's probably a smart trade value wise, but I don't know if I personally would make it. There's just something about losing a piece of gear and knowing I might never get that sound again. It's why I've never parted ways with a single pedal or amp in all my years of playing.

The AxeFX is the core of majority of my tones, and vital to one of my projects.

It'd be a kick in the pants to get rid of it, but at the same time - I can just go by another one.

Mayones run 4-5k each here. I'd take it instantly if it was a standard regius with the maple top in red. The inlays make me a little weary, I know it'll play like butter though.

Also looks like the pickups have been swapped for something.

>>52680710
I play a Les Paul Custom as my main guitar at the moment, that's not likely to change in my solo stuff. I can see myself using the Mayones more in my current live band though.

Guy is in France unfortunately, so there's no chance of playing it. He offered me a JP6 as an alternative, but I'm not interested in that at all.

It's such a hard decision because both pieces of gear are killer and amazing at what they do.

If I took it I'd buy another AxeFX, if I don't there's a good chance I'll buy my own Regius 6 (in red) in the next year or two.

I'd honestly go for it in the end, knowing how much Mayones can go for over here you could always get a Axe-Fx again, even though the one fella I know who sold his said it was the biggest regret of his life lol.

Couldn't hurt to trade I guess. You've got a fair few other amps too so I guess you could make due with those til you can afford the Axe-Fx or something similar.

The only thing really holding me back is the inlays as silly as that might sound. Value aside - it'd be impossible to sell a Katatonia model Mayones in Australia, and those inlays are eh. It'd cost about 3.2K to get another AxeFX which isn't a big deal honestly, but for about 3.8K I could get a Mayones Regius 6 in red with a maple top, no inlays, and bareknuckles. Hey /GG/,

I'm curious what a "Jam Session" entails? Is there anything I should know/be expected to know/practice before hand? Are these events beginner/intermediate players should be joining? Or will I just be a pain?

I'm a "6 month old" guitarist, and currently play in two cover bands. I consider myself in between beginner and intermediate. I can play all the songs that my band wants to cover, but its mostly just powerchord stuff and riffs, nothing overly complicated. I've found this to be quite simple and can play everything after some practice as its mostly just rote memorization. I have close to 0 improvisation experience because the bands I'm in don't require it at all though.

Anyway, one of my favorite bars/clubs is having a funk jam session next week and I am interested in joining. However I have absolutely no real idea what a "jam session" entails. Is there anything I'm going to need to know/learn/practice before hand? What will I be expected or even hope to play? Is it just improv 100% of the way? Should I even attend? Or is this usually for more experienced musicians?

Help me out /GG,/
You are my only hope.

Faded sgs are workhorses. Their only major flaw is if they are dropped flat on their back then the headstock pops off.

Swapping SGs would be paying for gloss, binding, a different neck profile, and a pickup swap.

I'd maybe just wire a coil cut or a peizo. 490s are pretty decent so changing them out is kind of the law of diminishing gains.

Bro since you already have an SG I recommend that if you do want to buy something then buy something else than an SG so you can use different guitars for different things and be more versatile. You could go with a strat or a tele for single coils or maybe an Ibanez or something like that for different pickup configurations, or a hollowbody, hatever you want. Really?

The reason it happens on cheaper end jazzmasters is because the tremolo is cheap chrome plated metal instead of stainless steel. The chrome plating rubs off near the string holes and leaves sharp edges that break the string.

What was breaking the strings on your jazzmaster?

Music is a collection of notes, and riffs and chords are just notes.
You probably just want to mix it up and not just have one riff and one chord progression.
Maybe add melodies from different riffs, mix notes of two riffs in one melody, the popular classical pieces are quite melodic.
Maybe instead of playing a chord and a scale for a part, play a melody and a counter melody.
Maybe play a harmony with a polyrhythmic chord progression.

You might want to go with a bigger nut width.
I remember a guy who took half the strings off of a 12 string, so he'd get the width like a classical, but with a steel string guitar.
Maybe just go with a wider nut width, though.
Wider nut width is T-cophony's preference, and pretty much the standard for classical guitar.

If you also have long fingers, or your fingers a really fat and get in the way of some chords going down the length of the neck,

I'm going to try it again some time and see what the distorted tone for metal is like.

My new bass amp head has two inputs - passive and active - and I was wondering which would be best to use since my bass has both passive and active pickups.
All I've noticed between the two is that active is quieter, and that passive is slightly louder but kicks a lot more bass.

Also, a fuzz pedal that I use has two outputs: clean and effected.
I would break my shit if I sent both of those outputs into my head?
I tried if briefly at low volume - clean into passive - and it seemed to keep all/most of the fuzz while delivering a great low end.
But could I damage my gear like that?

Maybe learn a few patterns and play it on some chords you know, or learn something easy.
The fastest way to get the technical skill down is probably the first option, though.

>>52686702
>so should I just play them over and over?
A better way to learn the scales is by looking at them, then try playing them, actively recalling them from memory.

You should play them enough to be familiar with the notes.

>How did you guys learn?
I learned by being shit at the trumpet and moved to a general-music class.
I learned how to paly ode to joy and a few chords.
A bit of the basics like how to fret, strum, etcetera.
I obtained some casual guitar lessons where I learned a very small amount of theory, obtained a songbook, and learned a blues scale.
From then, I was learning some punk rock, rock, classic rock and improvising some blues here and there.
I did write something rhythmic when first learning, and wrote a few rock and simple finger style pieces after the lessons (which were once a week for a few months).
I then focused mainly on expanding my finger style repertoire, and had a bit of an obsession with the un-traditional-finger-style techniques.
First of those pieces learned included Trace Bundy's canon, John Butler's Ocean, Justin King's Knock on Wood, and a load of T-cophony pieces.
I've kind of been learning a little bit of everything, even outside of music.
I'm a polymath at heart.

Knock on Wood

Improvising in the shape of Ocean provided quite a bit of entertainment.

Oh, also didn't mention that I learned how to play the guitar part for Jocking Jay-Z on guitar at one point.

I used to sing, and had pretty good pitch, but I never really liked my voice.
So, I had a bit of strum&sing in my black bag of tricks.

Relative to some finger style stuff like plucking notes in a sequence while simultaneously playing a bassline with your thumb or some variation of that, right handed tapping is pretty easy.
But, I say that nothing is actually difficult.
Complicated things (which are usually deemed difficult) are but composed of simple basic structures, which all lead back to mathematics, eventually to a bunch of 1s and operations.

It's somewhat of a misconception. The pickups in those guitars are decent, but they're typically paired with cheap ass linear taper 16mm pots and the cheapest tone caps in the world. If you're any good with a soldering iron, you can upgrade to CTS or Bourns pots and a nicer cap for $20 to $30 depending on how many controls your replacing. If it's a humbucker setup, a little treble bleed circuitry across the volume pots helps too. Pic related.

The agile is ok for the price. My LTD was more expensive, but then again it is better made, lighter, has a thinner neck, sounds better and is easier to play on (mostly because there is one string less but also because the backside of the neck isn't glossy)

Would probably buy agile again, probably one with multi scale. But you have to buy their most high end models, otherwise you will probably get less quality.

Anyway, I see that it has amp/effects modeling software on it like a Line 6 POD.
Is there an application to edit the patches like Line 6 Edit at all? It looks like it would be incredibly tedious doing it through the pedal itself.

Faaaark, knowing how much they go for here that's be a sick deal. but also knowing that the Axe is pretty used alot by you is another thing.

+Rare guitar over here
+You could always buy another Axe-FX II Mark II for cheaper than a new Mayonnaise
+You have the DSL and the 8100 which you could get by with until you can afford a new Axe-FX or something similar
-You seem really unsure about the inlays
-Is it really the Mayonnaise you want?
-All the way from France is pretty far, if the guitar is a lemon (which isn't very often with Mayos) it'd be a pain to get it back to him, plus anything can happen shipping it halfway across the globe.
-It will go up in value but would you be able to sell it/trade it for something else?

Me personally I'd keep the Axe-Fx for now as I've got enough guitars, and although they're nowhere the near the level of a Mayo I wouldn't play it that much since my band exclusively uses 7's. It's one hell of a choice though man, may need a day or two to think about it, talk it over with your band as well.

Love Mayones, but I'd definitely go a maple cap red Regius with no inlays. They're about $5200 new (the Katatonia model), but as rare as they are you'd never be able to sell it here haha.

I'm not too worried about the guitars quality, shipping is another story however.

Right now I'm leaning towards AxeFX. As I said, I could buy another one, but I could pay a bit more and get my own Regius, but would I?

I'm actually GASing for Matamp right now haha. Pair of KT-88 and 5U4Gs would destroy venues.

Issue with playing in a doom, grind, death metal, and jamming post-rock. Nothing but the axefx can do everything...

True, anything in that price range is impossible to sell to a bunch of bogans playing low-end Ibanez RG's haha.

Yeah anything can happen shipping that far. The action for both my Schecters was fucked up from the USA and it took alot of work to get the bass playable.

Well you gotta think about do you REALLY need it, as much as it'd be the prize of your collection you have a pretty bitchin' Gibson and a bunch of other pretty decent guitars as well.

Oh man, I'd love to try one but I've never seen one up here, they're amazing things though.

Exactly, my main band plays grindcore/melo-death/Thrash, I jam fusion stuff with my drummer and I sometimes jam Jazz/Blues stuff with my old old guitar teacher. Even though it's nowhere near an Axe-Fx the Pod was the best option for me at that point.

I know that, in the end the Axe-Fx II XL is still the flagship of amp modelling and not much compares, plus I'd just do a few pup swaps in your guitars as well if you're really not too happy with them save buying a ridiculously priced import like Mayonnaise.

I figured, monster things but so rare.

Yeah, I was looking at getting something like a 6505, Laney Ironheart or Used rectifier but in the end I decided that although it won't sound amazing and will take some work the POD was my best bet. I sort of regret not holding out for a Eleven Rack since I already use Pro Tools and it really does sound good but they are tricky buggers to use live. Would love an Axe-Fx sometime though.

I know I know haha, everyone wants something like that in their collection.

That's why I was originally going to go with a 6505 since they're the best affordable workhorse. I already have the Albion TCT35c which is more or less a Vox on roids so that could've covered the softer styles but oh well.

It sucks, my bassists been trying to sell his BC Rich NJ Deluxe Warlock for ages now. It really isn't for him and it sounds ok for ridiculously heavy slam and all that but he can't even sell it for $700 (paid $1200 for it) and no one is interested round these parts, it's all super-strats here.

In retrospect I think I did, so many ways to run it live. Well the plan for me is either:

a) Get a tube poweramp to use with the POD, Mesa/VHT or even a Marshall would be in my field.
b) Buy a tube preamp like an ENGL or Mesa and use that with the Matrix and use the POD for effects mainly live. Although I'm fairly sure Mesa has discontinued theirs and I've been really out of the loop on rack mounted tube preamps for a while now.

Remember most sound guys will meltdown of you want to run direct. Best to stick to pre+power setups.

Luckily the soundguy who does the shows around here is really knowledgeable and does direct all the time. But yeah for most venues I won't be that lucky, I'll always just mic up my 2x12 if I have to or borrow a lads 4x12. My preferred method is running an amp next to me for monitoring/front row hearing me and then having the other output go direct, it won't always work like that unfortunately.

That's the plan so far, I'm planning to build a rack setup like that, I just wish the Laney Ironheart studio was just a preamp and didn't have a 15w power amp section, those things are killer for the price.

Does anybody build pedals?

I wanna get started in it, so I figured I'd build a fairly simple boost effect I found, the Boost-O-Rama. I downloaded DIY Layout Creator since I figured I could get some input on whether I set everything up on the perfboard correctly. Don't want to buy everything and realize that I messed something up.

The value of R3 is 10k, the program messed it up and I didn't realize until I had put the picture in Paint, so I spliced it back in for the sake of clarity.

If I messed anything up, let me know. I haven't really worked with perfboard before, but I'll be working on it tomorrow at my internship (making a basic Arduino shield to basically act as a cheap signal generator) so I'll have at least a little bit of experience.

My understanding is the guy running VHT got a loan from a company and essentially put the name and schematics up as collateral. When he defaulted they did a cease and desist and started building them in China. He started Fryette and builds them all in the USA. Steve isn't completely innocent, but it's shitty for him either way. VHT has pretty poor QC with them coming from China now too.

I'm sort of into that, but I'm not knowledgable enough to read schematics like that though. I have friends that can and I'll most likely learn from them at some point but for now I just use the schematics from tagboardeffects. They use veroboards/stripboards, seems that's the most common, that and PCBs.

Sounds like a Phaser effect but I know that they use all sorts of Reverbs, Delays to get those sounds as well. Chorus effects is one that Paul of Cynic is a big fan of.

Haven't gotten any of them down yet, still pretty new. I wish I had picked guitar up years ago seriously, it's pretty fun.

Does anyone recommend any fun songs for a beginner?

See if they will give you a better deal on it. You can jew guitar center down on everything used. Guitar center checks out gear before they buy it. There shouldnt be any thing wrong with things you buy from them.

Looking to upgrade my phaser, ideas? Favorite Strymon Pedal?

Also, If you're between a BigSky and a BlueSky, get the BigSky, that extra favorite and adjustable mod setting is sorely missed by my BlueSky.

Is there a significant difference in sound you get from a Semi Solid body guitar? I read that it sounds more rich and warm and has more clarity. I don't really know the difference.

>> No.52704011

yea it's allot warmer. i recently bought an epiphone dot semi hollow and now i think hollow bodies have incredible sound

>I run like that, axefx does the IRs and runs out to desk as well as to the power amp and sometimes a signal + DI to my laptop so I can listen back later and see what I need to practice.
I never thought of trying that, although I'm not a big fan of using laptops live for anything besides samples usually.

>> No.52705033

>>52704993
I just have a netbook capturing the signal. Nothing crazy. The added bonus is you can quickly reload banks off it in the event something were to go wrong. The DI is cool because you can reamp it when you get home and listen back to exactly how it sounded. I can get obsessed with sounding "perfect" at times haha.

In theory you could hook the laptop into the desk and have it control backing/click tracks, and use that as a reference point to send MIDI data to the AxeFX to control patch and effects switching.

I like to be in control, so I don't do that, but it's certainly possible.

They sound fine but the feel of unfinished mahogany makes me cringe.

It's like a half-finished guitar. At that price I would just go for a used special from the 90s

But isn't the price difference only due to the finish and stuff like that? I mean, there are no substancial changes on the quality of the sound itself are they?

Yeah but a finish/binding and things like that are a big part of feel and to me that's one of the most important things in a guitar. The neck carve on the standards is thicker and it just feels like a premium quality guitar all around. The specials while nice feel like stripped down guitars.

Considering you can get a Standard for around $700 I would save up and go for a standard every time but if you're on a budget the special will get you more or less the same sound. (depending on pickups)

>> No.52705920

>>52705885
I think I can afford the Standard, it's just that I already have a Special Faded, so if buying the Standard is not going to be a great change I'd rather buy something else

>> No.52705983

>>52705920
It'll be a huge difference in terms of feel, for me a standard is the type of guitar you want to keep for life while the specials are just average workhorse guitars.

If I were you i'd sell the special and buy the standard and then get something else.
