hey /mu/tants
what is your favorite Tom Waits album and why?

>> No.52636020

Rain Dogs, because fuck you.

>> No.52636054

Swordfishtrombones, with Rain Dogs and Bone Machine a close second, then Small Change.
Why? Because, fuck you.

Nighthawks at the Diner

it was the first one I heard when I was a teenager. i was very into jazz/blues at the time and i rly liked the beatnik-y style

i live in a very small town where most people have to travel and commute to work and there's this diner everyone goes to that has been around forever and it makes me think of it

Real Gone

I dunno, I just love the songs so much. The lo-fi aesthetic and grittiness is also perfect. Marc Ribot's guitar playing is on fleek.

Is anyone able to do imagery as good as Tom Waits?

Pic related because I find it's the best combination of his blues-y stuff and his more experimental stuff. It's just generally very listenable.

It's the one I've known the longest (my mum has it on vinyl) so it's the one that introduced me to him. On top of that, it's a brilliant album and is incredibly consistent.

Swordfishtrombones because I'm not a faggot, Bone Machine is a REAAAALLY close second though

Small Change, Franks Wild Years, Alice, Orphans and Rain Dogs are all great runners-up

Most of his others aren't that good (though they have good moments/songs) but the ones listed above (specifically the top two) are some of my favorite albums ever

Ever heard the demos? search "tom waits demo dump" on the archive if not. They're really good, like all his demos are. They're like completely different songs.

He's able to say so much through imagery without having to say too many words. That pennies line for example. Also this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1372DyU8H8

>and I fell down at the derby
>and now the night's black as a crow
>It was a train that took me away from here
>but a train can't bring me home

That line always kills me. The song is about a guy who's down on his luck and at this point in the song he goes to a race track, presumably because he is broke. The image of him falling down in the dirt in front of everyone when he's already rock bottom is just so strong. Also it's kind of childish, the way that he cries the line. An old man crying like a little kid who fell down and scraped his elbow. That makes it even sadder for me.

I have, and I thought they were really cool. The demo version of Please Wake Me Up is especially good.

That string of three songs at the end of that album is one of my favorite moments ever and sums up so much of what I love about Waits.
