All the references to his mom, him being an only child, at the moment North being an only child, the Beatles context similar to the King Crimson context in Power, are all brilliant. But from a composition viewpoint, it's lackluster. We have the generic four chord crap that's in all of pop music. Despite using the typical four chord crap, it could've still been embellished to be more interesting, like a buncha well place inversions or arpeggios. But none of those are there. There are harmonies, but they aren't like really interesting harmonies like what somebody would find in a Beach Boys or certain Beatles tracks. Also it doesn't help that Kanye wanted this to be a simple, sincere track, yet still ends up using autotune. If he wanted to use autotune, at least do interesting vocal melodies like he did in 808s or Blood on the Leaves. But that was not there either. With all that being so uninteresting, one would expect maybe some really good bars as was the case with many east coast rappers with minimal production like Wu-Tang. But despite the well written lyrics, there are no technical bars to spice things up, either.
This would work nicely as a piece of a poem or a short story since the lyrics are so nice. But as a piece of music, it is very boring and lackluster. A surprise considering it's Kanye West behind it. |
