You've mentioned two bands that are very similar. I'm racking my brain trying to think of more artists like Deafheaven. Sunbather is a pretty standalone pieces from what I've found.

An album you might really enjoy that has a lot of atmospherics is the new Fallujah album. It's called The Flesh Prevails. It's a lot heavier and it's a lot more technical but it has a lot of atmosphere and has a really puffy soft tonal quality. Check this out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DSUNCuTYFo

This album is really heavy though, the first few tracks are quite the onslaught but the atmosphere is great throughout.

Ramshackle has really been helping me sort through some things. Pat's lyrics are amazing. I've been having problems since I quit drinking and I've been sorting my life out socially and whatever. Figuring out who I am and it turns out I still believe in a lot of what I used to when I was younger. Live the Dream + The War on Errorism (NOFX) put everything back in perspective. I'm just less angsty haha

That's weird that Ashe is your favorite metal vocalist and he only does clean vocals haha, pretty neat. I don't know if I have a favorite, I listen to so much music and it's more about everything together anymore. I'm amazed by people like Scott Hull who writes all of the Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Pig Destroyer stuff. He programs the drums for AN and then their drummer records then after the fact and it blows my mind what he produces and writes for the drums along with his utilization of 8 string guitars and his originality and hard hitting style of riffs.

Ashe is amazing. Do you like Devin Townsend stuff?

And I feel you dude. I really like music where lyrics take the wheel - and a lot of folk punk stuff does that.

And no, I haven't, is it any good?

>>52502137
Haha right? I just love his melodic style, and his great sense of dynamics. And being a high tenor myself, I have a soft spot for high voices.

I've never really listened to grindcore. Is Agoraphobic Nosebleed a artist to start out with?

And I've actually never listened to Devin Townsend... I should get on that!

>> No.52502373

>>52502295
Big Swamp Gospel has one of my favorite Pat melodies, it's also a really cool concept album. This is the song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkFORiAOwaM

Folk punk is definitely finding a spot in my heart. I tried to shut it out for a long time but I have a friend who is super into it and over the last year I've finally started feeling again and accepting it's wonderfulness.

Are you a singer of sorts?

Devin Townsend is great, lots of different stuff to check out.

Grindcore is pretty out there and there's a lot to it. Agorapocalypse is a cool album but it's a non traditional grindcore style. It's just obliterating and loud, fast, groovy, with a lot of wild vocals. It's good if you're into really heavy stuff. A lot of grindcore is shit, though. I don't listen to much traditional stuff. Napalm Death's Smear Campaign is also really good and the first two Pig Destroyer albums are fucking awesome.

Unfortunately I don't know any fully instrumental Blackgaze bands, but if you want instrumental metal with atmosphere, then check out
Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw
Russian Circles - Empros
If These Trees Could Talk - Red Forest (not metal per se, more post hard rock)
Also, if you want some atmospheric metal with minimal vocals, check out
Wolves In The Throne Room - Diadem Of 12 Stars
Botanist - VI: Flora
Isis - Panopticon
If none of these are really doing it for you and you just want Blackgaze, then check out
Lantlos -.neon
Liturgy - Aesthetica
An Autumn For Crippled Children - Try Not To Destroy Everything You Love
Alcest - Ecailles de Lune
mol - mol (only an EP, but very good nonetheless)

I listened to it again the other day, because apparently I should've given it another shot and approached it from a "post rock" perspective.

I got more out of it, but not much.

I made sure to listen out for the supposed "metal" riffing too (counted five distinctly 'metal' riffs). I was pretty disappointed from that angle.

The rhythm section is the only part that can be considered metal, and is the only spot where you can hear third-wave black metal influence. That isn't a detractor from the music though, just a genre distinction.

What I mostly didn't like was the overuse of played-out, distinctly vanilla post-rock and 'gaze effects (short delay reverb, really?), and cheesy, cliche songwriting. It came across as incredibly hackneyed, bordering on crescendo-core at times. I guess to someone who's new to (sub)genres like post rock, screamo, or blackgaze they'd find it pretty interesting or special, and I'd suggest anyone who does to explore those areas of music more.

I was talking to someone who was pretty adamant about the albums' quality awhile ago and they told me they grew out of it already after exploring those genres more, and that now listening to it is "a little disappointing." Go figure.
