>people who only go to see a band play the singles from an album
more like>band only has good singles and doesn't have consistent albumsinb4 "rockist", don't even try to pretend this isn't a problem
>Band plays their big hit single.>Everyone leaves once it's gone.
>>52477368Maybe they shouldn't have been a one-hit wonder and that wouldn't happen.
Everyone knows the most amusing thing ever (saddest thing ever?) is the Rolling Stones who have a huge catalog but never deviate from their stale Satisfaction/Jumpin' Jack Flash/Brown Sugar/Start Me Up setlist.
>>52477516Or Kiss."We figure there's no point in ever making new music again since the fans aren't interested."-- Paul Stanley
does this still happen with MGMT? lol, they are cursed for eternity
>>52477516Keef is probably physically unable to play any other songs and his hands just move around for those songs like a reflex whenever someone gives him a guitar.
>>52477551That's another thing. They also never, never deviate from their same setlist (Rock And Roll All Nite/Detroit Rock City/Cold Gin/Let Me Go, Rock And Roll)
>>52477576Nobody's going to pay over $100 to see KISS perform Music from The Elder.
The curse of longtime music acts. Kiss, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tom Petty, Journey, and Foreigner all had new albums in the last several years but they only played 1-2 songs from them live. People who go to see those guys by-and-large only want to hear a couple of their singles that are played on CRR 3x every day.
>>52477564I think Keith Richards actually has been dead since 2002 and they just prop his corpse up at shows ala Weekend At Bernie's.
>>52477637Except for Neil Young. He plays on average 75% new material at his shows, even when he's with CS&N.
>band makes you suffer through an entire set of terrible garbage before FINALLY getting to the song(s) that everyone paid to hear them playI wish more bands would play their good shit first so that the smart people in the crowd such as myself can hurry and GTFO and beat the traffic
>>52477705
>>52477560it happened in their concert i saw last summer
>>52477705You didn't even bait the hook lol
>>52477684>>52477637Most of the time, I'd rather hear the new stuff played. It happens a lot.>the band sounds so old and dead and tired when they play X overplayed single from 30 years ago>break into the new stuff and they're on fireOf course that doesn't mean they should never play old stuff; most fans are there to hear that and it's what they built their legacy on. But the point is more that many longtime bands have a deep catalog and hearing an obscure B-side once in a while would be nicer than a stale Greatest Hits setlist. Like if, say, Aerosmith gave Walk This Way and Sweet Emotion a rest while and played something off of Night In The Ruts or Rock In A Hard Place.
>>52477765>and played something off of Night In The Ruts or Rock In A Hard Place. They'll never ever play anything from those albums again because Steven Tyler doesn't want to be reminded of almost dying from an OD in the early 80s.
>>52477765Case in point. Shuffling up the setlist can never hurt. You mentioned Aerosmith? Well, I can also argue that ZZ Top does not need to play Sharp Dressed Man and Legs at every show either.
>>52477765Foreigner IIRC only played like one song from Can't Slow Down live which is too bad because it was their best album in decades.
>>52477330It doesn't bother me that people do thisIt bothers me when people complain when the artist doesn't play the song they want to hearYou're paying to hear the artist perform, not hear them play what you want. It's usually middle aged people who complain about it, but still
>>52477347what kind of shit bands are you listening to that this is an actual problem?
>>52478023>It's usually middle aged people who complain about it, but stillIt's not just old nostalgic schmendricks who do that. Jimi Hendrix who made all of three albums and died at 27 got really upset towards the end at people who just wanted to hear Purple Haze and All Along The Watchtower.
>>52477564It pretty much is. He claims his memory is shot and he can't remember how their songs go, he's just playing them like an automatic reflex.
>band stops playing for a minute>crowd starts chanting Seven Nation Army
>>52477647he's an animatronic puppet like at Chuck E Cheese
>>52478260you mean like clapping?
>>52477832Paul McCartney could perhaps also give Hey Jude and Let It Be a rest too.
>>52478281this plus actually chanting the main riff
>>52478308
>>52477516still though imagine forking out however much money to see the stones and they don't even do jumpin jack flash or satisfactioni don't mind so much that they never deviate, people go to stones concerts for the hits, of which they have a ridiculous amounti think they were more of a singles band than an album band anyway - always good overall but with flashes of pure genius
>>52478322But say, it might be nice to hear 2000 Man, Dancing With Mr. D, Hot Stuff, or other more obscure Stones songs.
>>52477832>>52478295Let's face it, most of the people who go to concerts like that are only there to hear the most popular songs played live. Chances are they haven't even heard many other songs besides those.
Remember when RHCP dropped Give It Away and Under The Bridge from their setlist during the SA Tour and people were pissed off?
>>52478023I kind of agree with you but if St. Vincent doesn't play Paris Is Burning when I see her live, I'll be a tad disappointed
>>52478260>band stops playing for a minute>crowd starts chanting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVjeheaFfsM>tfw this actually happened>during every set by every band>on a 3 day festival
>>52478425DO DO DO DODODO DO DODA DO DO DO DADODO DO DO
>>52478425kekwas it some inside joke?
>>52478414Prepare for disappointment, she hasn't played that song in a hell of a long time. On the plus side, you may get to hear Sparrow, which is one of her best new songs.
>>52478383That's the dichotomy...do you play what you want or give in to popular demand?
>>52477330>go see anco live>they playing mostly chz shit>ppl near me are pissed off that they havnt played my girls yet
>>52478456ah well, at this point I'm just hoping she doesn't OD before I see her
>>52478454Looks like it. It was inside joke made by a group of retarded greasy hipsters following facebook page called Fajne Rzeczy which steals memes from /mu/ and tumblr.
>>52478516o kurwa lolgdzie to robili?
>>52478457My dad says that he thinks the band should play whatever they want because "You'll get a better performance when they're doing a song they're actually into."
>>52478567In your old man when he was making you
Tbh, Alt-J's "Left Hand Free" is better then the rest of the album.
>>52478457>>52478383"We play the songs from Appetite For Destruction because the fans want to hear them although we really don't want to because I don't feel a lot of connection to that music anymore."-- Axl Rose
>>52479144threadly reminder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20ccfjD4ZyQ
>>52479188Yeah his voice is kill.
>>52479188why does the guitarist look like some high school scene kid
at least this never happened to king crimson. saw them earlier this year, played a kickass set. they are a consistently good live band
RHCP largely avoid playing old material in their setlists although on occasion they'll do something out of left field like play a song from The Uplift Mofo Party Plan that hasn't seen the light of day since GHW Bush was president.
>>52479255>42 years old
>>52479294See, that's how it should be for longtime bands. There's nothing wrong with playing your old stuff, but it's nice to mix it up once in a while and sometimes surprise the crowd with an obscure B-side from 20 years ago.
>>52479335I saw a video of RHCP in 2012 playing Me And My Friends, but it was in Brazil. They probably wouldn't play that in North America because the audience would be full of yogurt heads who don't know any of their songs except Dani California and Around The World.
"The Beach Boys are just a nostalgia act. Not like us."-- Mick JaggerHhhhhere I go...
>>52479188jesus i thought that was a shred
>>52479440In their case it doesn't really matter since RHCP is just a singles band anyway.
>>52478322>people go to stones concerts for the hits, of which they have a ridiculous amountYeah the Stones have a lot of hits but they only play like a couple of them and it's always the exact same setlist since about 1990.
Sun Kil Moon has the right idea. He made similar music as Red House Painters, just under a different name. Not rehashing, but it still sounds like Kozelek. Keep going, but change your name after a while. That's what I would do if I was an older musician. Let's say this new version of Smashing Pumpkins wasn't called "Smashing Pumpkins", but something else? Maybe people would be more open to hearing new stuff, and not just wanting the hits?
>>52479188why are their guitars so untuned
>>52477398Not really their choice.
>>52479335Metallica have played almost everything in their catalog since the late 2000s but it's easy for them since they don't have that much material compared to, eg, the Rolling Stones and they were never a singles band except in the 90s.
>>52479817I guarantee you if they played Some Kind Of Monster, the crowd at their shows would empty out in under 2 minutes.
>>52479188This is an overdub right? Holy shit that voice doesn't sound real. Now for some truly god-awful singing by an once great singer: http://youtu.be/XZdiaFXW2U8?t=5m30s
>>52480033Axl went downhill remarkably early.
This whole thread makes no fucking sense. What one-hit wonders dont save their hit for the encore? What singles did the Rolling Stones release in the 90s? Since when did /mu/ care about the integrity of Kiss, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc? What is "rockist" about one hit wonders?I feel like /mu/ just took a shit on me.
>>52480161just accept the neo mu
>>52480033Actually though, Meatloaf's voice started going downhill right after Bat Out Of Hell. This isn't a recent development at all.
>>52480218>neo muget the fuck back to /v/
>>52480033Yeah he's in his 60s but age isn't really as big a factor as proper vocal technique. Dio sounded great right to the end, Mick Jagger still sounds good, and Steven Tyler, but Robert Plant lost most of his upper range before he was even 30 years old.
>>52480300>>52480033Protip: Meatloaf was never really that good of a vocalist; Bat Out Of Hell was sped up and triple-tracked.
>>52480249>get the fuck back to /v/neo-/mu/tant detected
>>52480300Plant and Roger Daltrey have def. gotten lower with age but they still have pitch control and don't randomly wander off-key while performing.
>>52477560Oracular Spectacular was satire of the same indie pop everyone eats up, except most people don't think it's satire. They kinda screwed themselves.
>>52480033this is great thank you anon
>>52480300Paul Stanley's voice is kill most likely because the guy spent decades haranguing the audience between sets and yelling how important all of Kiss's fans were and all that.
>>52480161>This whole thread makes no fucking sense. What one-hit wonders dont save their hit for the encore? Not quite related, but I do know that Judas Priest and Kiss customarily always played You Got Another Thing Coming and Rock And Roll All Nite as the encore.
i thought people just went to see bands so they could take shitty recordings with their phones.
>>52480906>phones>2015 in 2 daysPeople record live shows with fucking TABLETS these days.
-
>>52477564>>52477516Not 100% true that they only play the stuff on Hot Rocks. I did some checking on setlist.fm and apparently 2000 Light Years From Home was played last year. Also Keith's ability to play is largely irrelevant since he doesn't really do anything anymore except the opening riff on songs. The guy is pretty well taxidermied and stuffed by this point.
>>52484439Yeah, that was at Glastonbury '13.
>people who go to see a band play when they've never listened to them before
>>52484581have you ever been to a festival
>>52484439That song was a big part of the setlist on the Steel Wheels Tour and never played again after that. Nice surprise that they broke it out at Glastonbury.
>>52484581>As if that it isn't one of the best ways to discover new unsigned bands. Soundclouds a shit
>>524847132000 Light Years From Home and She's a Rainbow are the only songs from TSMR the Stones ever played live.
>>52484581seriously? there is absolutely nothing wrong with this you faggot
>>52478516>>steals>>memesYou clearly don't know how memes work.
>>52478414The only song she plays with any frequency from Marry Me is Your Lips Are Red and it doesn't sound anything like the album version. I do wish she would play more songs from it as well but she already played for two hours when I saw her and she has to leave at some point.
>>52477684That's because Neil doesn't give a shit, I remember me and a friend laughing at the old hippies pissed off he played anything he did after 1979 at a show
Semi-related but the Nirvana show where Kurt does the opening to SLTS before going into a different song twice is comical
>mfw Trent ends show with Hurt
>>52486393I wish more guys were like him. Just play whatever you want; it's not gonna stop people from coming to your shows because most of them just go for the bragging rights of seeing X legendary artist perform.
>>52480300>Mick Jagger still sounds goodI hope you aren't being serious. His vocals are pathetically bad and have been for at least 20 years
>>52479188
>>52479327He looks like something that would get laughed out of a KMFDM show
>>52484713Glastonbury is a big hippie event. I'd guess the Stones decided to play a psychedelic tune in honor of the festival. Also their performance at that show was pretty good and proved the old guys can still bring it.
>>52479327good lord, this is beyond "trying too hard"I'm not sure if anyone has ever tried this hard in the history of man
>>52486636Neil Young usually plays one or two old hits like Heart Of Gold and then immediately moves onto his new CD.
At that point in your career, it really doesn't matter. If the Rolling Stones did an entire concert of nothing but making armpit noises, they'd still sell tickets.
>>52486740Keith is like 70 or something but he looks more like 90. I'm surprised someone that decrepit-looking can even get up and stand on stage, but apparently he nailed Sympathy For The Devil.
>>52487264SPOILER YOUR SKELETONSTOO SPOOKY
>>52487264Like someone else explained, it's an automatic reflex by this point that he can do without even thinking.
>>52487355he actually died sometime in the 90'shis body is just so used to going on stage that it just keeps doing it
>>52487355If you do a certain behavior enough times, your brain creates neural pathways that enable you to do it almost unconsciously. Lrn2neurology.
>>52478414You already listen to St. Vincent. Disappointment is pretty much there from the get go.
>>52486517link?
>>52488753>tfw
>>52480300https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD-MdiUm1_YPlant was absolutely golden in the Led Zeppelin reunion of 2007 even when his voice was gone because of drugs and reckless singing he got back on his feet altough you can hear how it took it's toll.
>>52485384Looks like you've got Ph D. in Memology
>>52486582I wish they would close with "Right Where It Belongs" one day. It's the only good song from that album and it's a perfect closer.
>>52480300>Dio sounded great right to the endHe lost a little bit of his aggressive tone although I'd say he was still about 80-90% of what he was in 1980.
>>52477330>Go to concert>Fans are great, atmosphere is awesome>Venue is really nice>Band goes on-stage, starts performing>You can tell they're playing with lots of emotion and playing well>The sound-mix is absolute garbage.
>>52489363https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F6KuKU8j6M
> Saw Iron Maiden at a festival> They play their singles as well as good songs from shitty albums and even stuff off their demo
>>52480300>I never got to see Dio live
So what was everyone's favorite show they've ever been to? Performance quality, just good times at the venue, any reason.
>>52487398underrated pot
>>52490118Maiden really do want to keep being an active band releasing new material; too bad most of it sucks. Of course they get annoyed when people only want them to play The Number Of The Beast and Run To The Hills.
>>52490572They have, what? 15 albums? There's more than enough material in their catalog that there's no need to just play the singles from TNOTB and POM.
>>52490295Last show I went to was american football in october. shit was awesome, i was suprised how well they sounded considering how many years its been.
>>52488753This disappointment feels pretty good.
>>52490295Not even a band I like but The Script put on a nearly free show in town and I have never seen any group more genuine and happy to be there. It was fantastic, I have a lot of respect for them now.
>>52490295Nick Cavefucking legendary
>>52487264Yeah they played a good set at Glastonbury, except they kind of fucked up Midnight Rambler, but it's a long tune. But let's face it - they are a novelty act now more suited to the Albert Hall rather than a premier festival.
>>52490295Kinda cliche but Swans. most intense musical experience ive ever had.
>>52492132The Stones looked lousy at the Super Bowl 8 years ago. Not in the least because Mick was just a little too old to be wearing a belly shirt on stage.
