Hey /mu/, I'm an amateur when it comes to turntables, is an adjustable counterweight completely necessary if i don't want my records fucked up?

If a turntable doesn't have an adjustable counterweight you can't control the weight at which your cartridge tracks, so it'll prolly track heavily, which is why people say it'd fuck up records. You also wouldn't be able to use a different kind of cartridge than the one that came with it if you could even replace it.

A counterweight should be on any turntable you'd consider buying. Consider it a litmus test for whether or not a turntable is even worth buying. Yours prolly can't go too far off (2.5 gram limit or something if it's like the P-Mount Technics my dad had), but you could easily fuck records up with a good turntable if you don't do your research and set the weight wrong.

Kudos on the Grado cart, if that's a picture of your actual turntable.

yes but
youve got there the one exception to the rule, which is P-Mount decks. P-Mount was introduced to make replacing carts a much simpler process, all P-Mount carts are of a standard weight and dimensions so you just have to plug them in the end of the arm. the tracking force is fixed, but its fixed at a sensible weight which doesnt fuck up records. the only disadvantage really is that the choice of P-Mount carts is much more limited than the huge selection of standard half inch mount ones available
