***IF YOU'RE NEW, AND WOULD LIKE TO JOIN, READ THIS FIRST!***

It's the 26th of December.

The point of these threads, is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this, by listening to, and ideally, discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture out of their comfort zone by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

We track our progress using calendars, which we fill with the albums we listen to on each day, and a rating of some sort for all of them. There are templates in the following posts. We encourage you to write the albums' titles, and the artists' names somewhere on your calendar. We don't have any tools for creating these calendars, we use simple image editing softwares.

You can predetermine a schedule for a month, or you can report back on whatever album you randomly picked every day. Many of us make our schedules interesting in various way, popular ones being genre restrictions, new releases, and recs from the /daily/ community.

We used to do listen alongs, but we don't really have the time anymore. For this, we had a plug.dj room, which we still use occasionally to hang out for a little while. It's usually empty, so if you want to spend a little time there, post in the thread, there most likely will be someone up for it. You can find it here:

In case plug.dj is not working, we have a backup wavelength room. You can find that here:
>wavelength.fm/stripey's

The threads usually start around 15:00 GMT. Anyone can start the threads, but usually one of /daily/'s dedicated trips starts them. If the thread is not yet up by 15:30 GMT, we encourage you to start it, just be sure to use the standard OP. Of course you can start it earlier than that too.

Yesterday, I listened to Cows – Cunning Stunts.

Cows were a post-hardcore/noise rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, known for their mixture of punk, blues and noise, and for their on-stage performances. For this album, I love how deceiving the cover is; one might think it’s a jazz record and that is a bit humorous to an extent. And of course, the album title is a spoonerism but I’m sure people can figure that out very easily.

Cunning Stunts grabbed my ears at “Heave Ho”; a song that includes a bugle as its centre of attention. The melody of the bugle, paired up with the beefy guitars made this song as a huge standout to me. It is short but I think everything that needed to be done in that track was done and I couldn’t ask for anything else. Unfortunately, the rest of this album reverted to a bland mix of post-hardcore and noise rock.

This is what I hate about post-hardcore/noise rock a lot. A lot of bands of this style just limit themselves to this straight-forward sound that doesn’t change up or attempt to make itself unique from others; it just keeps a decent or average riff slathered in distortion or tuned improperly and keep it the way it is. And sadly, that’s what the rest of Cunning Stunts is after “Heave Ho”. There were some moments where they at least got something going: the bass tone on “Mine” along with the vocal delivery was good and a few guitar tones scattered throughout the songs like on “Terrifique” or “Down Below”. However, there was one track that stood out as terrible to me: “The Woman Inside” for that abysmal singing on the verses and silly screaming on the chorus.

Overall, a bit disappointing considering how good “Heave Ho” was but then again, if they included more of the bugle, it would have been more gimmicky than anything. Unfortunately, this band might as well fade along with the rest of these types of bands. What a shame.

Today I listened to Dead Can Dance - s/t.
I have known DCD since I was a child thanks to my parents, but I listened to their later albums (what my parents bought) by that time.
Their s/t differs from their later material, it's less new age-focused but is some powerful, enchanting gothic rock. People who are fond of post punk albums with a darker vibe are going to enjoy this, a bonus if they like ethereal music. The latter element is probably what makes DCD stand out. I really like the usage of those flanging guitars, tribal beats, distinctive bass. The vocals go well with the instrumentals, the female voice makes these tracks more flowy and occult whilst the male vocals are quite the typical choice in goth music. This album is far from the jumpy, punky beats, it's a consistent album with dark, mysterious, brooding atmosphere and the way it puts out is momentous.
If anyone knows that's similar to this album, I'd like a rec.

A bit behind on my schedule, mainly because of christmas and other stuff but finally listened to Say Goodnight To The World. Wasn't a big fan at all. Maybe I would have liked it more if I had heard anything by Acid Bath but it just felt like generic blues rock to me, not a lot of emotion to it, nothing that grabbed me atleast. Lyrics felt unique though.

Listening to The Ascension now.

supreme dicks - the emotional plague
>experimental rock, psychedelic rock, lo-fi, post-rock

there are some stellar moments of psychedelia on here, hell there was also one track that sounded like slint's don aman for a few minutes. but there was also several moments when this record delves into wankery, ambient, jazz and i just find it uninteresting. inconsistent, and variety doesn't help in this case.

So, today I listened to The Bulgarian Voices Angelite's Fly, Fly My Sadness, which if I'm not mistaken is highly rated on RYM. It's a live album but that's actually hard to find out as the sound quality is really good and there's no real crowd interaction. Music wise, it borrows strongly from Russia in that Tuvan Throat Singing is applied, and mixes it with more Traditional Bulgarian Folk elements in its wind and string instrumentation. Due to this mix, it differs a lot from the Bulgarian Folk I'm used to. There's no bagpipes here for one (;_;) and the constant presence of the throat singing gives it a very different feel.

Unfortunately, I'm not that much of a fan of the throat singing because it is so constant and quite monotone. Despite that however, I've still found myself enjoying the album as the rest of it is really quite good. The instrumentation is very emotionally provoking, the female chants in the background hit exactly the right notes and acting like an instrument of its own. I would've liked to hear a few more instruments like the harp on the first track though, as the album is very vocally driven where more variety might've served it better.

Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable experience. Just a bit over average I'd say. It's just unfortunate the album art is so unaccomodating for... creative editing.

This one was better. Loved the post-rock meets no-wave feel The Ascension has going on for itself . The longer pieces feels anthemic and grand and are really great while the shorter ones end up being a bit forgetable compared to tracks like the title track, Light Field and The Spectacular Commodity.

I'm not as sold on Branca as Benji is but I definitely enjoyed this one and given a few replays I'll probably end up loving it. I wish the mixing and mastering wasn't so rough around the edges and I think a more polished and clean sound would make it an even more spectacular album with an even bigger feel to itself.

Modified some scores aswell. Naked City gets a red. Not because it's a bad album, but because it was way too deep for me and not enjoyable at all. Found it very off putting tbh

yesterday I listened to boris feat. the sunn oh's but fuck if I can recall shit from it so I'll relisten today/tomorrow/whatever

today I listened to jack rose and some other fuckers and i thought it'd be american primitivism but fuck me it wasn't it was just some country with american primvitivism and it was kinda boring and i wanted it to be over. 4/10

today i also listened to glenn branca - symphony no. 6 and it was great, in many respects the same kind of thing as the ascension, with some tracks being more no wavey and the best tracks (such as the last one) being like these long, slow, droning building upping songs that were really fuckin good so like i'm pretty satisfied with this. 8/10 because i like it as much as the ascension i think.

i need to watch a film. idc if it's live action or animated. no art house bullshit please let it be somewhat linear. i want it to be kind of a feelsy film but not one that depresses you or anything, make it kinda melancholy and all that's fine. it's ok if it's kinda happy though i kinda wanna be happy but maybe not. thought-provoking film is ok but no art house like i said. also nothing too long altho 2 hours is fine but anything much longer than that is probably a no-no for me rn. please rec me films. oh also i would not mind at all if it had some nice scenery going on, either of the city or landscapes or idc. something that's maybe kinda a bit like lost in translation feels-wise would be great. please rec!

So anyways, today I listened to one of the most impressive people in American music history, Paul Robeson. His career was wild and vast, stretching through sports, film, theatre, civil rights, and was a major figure in the opposition of McCarthism.

But there was one thing he did that, really, no man can touch. As a famous actor, you may be able to fault his performances. He could be called a communist, and so politically I'm sure a lot of people would oppose him. But his voice, above all else, was absolutely phenomenal.

I just listened to the 1945/1946 recordings of him compiled onto the album "Spirituals", released in 1946. Here we have many well known spirituals, including Go Down Moses and By an' By. As usual, Robeson's fantastically crisp and passionate tone is ever present. He is and will always be one of the most impressive singers in American music history and it shows here. The recording is very clean for its date, with narry a scratch, scuff or fuzz to detract from his voice.

Definitely check it out. Roberson was one of the first performers to bring black American spirituals to the concert stage, so getting to know him even a little bit is very valuable when looking at American music history.

today was the first time I heard andrew jackson jihad. This album was surprisingly short, though it wasn't really up my alley, so that was nice. I enjoy Ghost Mice quite a bit, but I found AJJ's sound just... not as good. I may try other records by them.

I also listened to Jens Lekman's Night Falls over Kortedala, which I fucking love. easy 8.

Music for Commercials by Yasuaki Shimizu, recommended by good friend rodriguez

I mistakenly assumed that the title of this album was ironic. No. This is a collection of tracks written for advertisements (and presumably broadcast at some point).

Each track is about a minute or so long, and most consist of a single micro-phrase of two or four bars, which is repeated over and over more or less exactly. The majority of the (few) videogame soundtracks I've listened to use this same presentation, but on those soundtracks the period of each cycle and selection is long enough to give each track an identity. When the riffs are two bars long and the songs last a minute each, it's difficult to hear them as anything but an undifferentiated mass of bland little segments.

I found this album extremely alienating, in several ways. It was intellectually distant, with each track (and the album) offering nothing of interest (likely deliberately, given the music's commercial function). It was emotionally sterile, as no idea is sustained or developed to the degree that I could begin to enjoy it. It was physically alienating too, because almost every cue deliberately eschews beats or strong rhythms that might encourage you to tap your foot or dance.

Fair is fair: music for advertisements should probably not be attempting to reach us in the ways that other musics do. But as a listening experience, as an album that is, this was just unsatisfying. I can't remember a single track, because none of them spoke to me or stood out. (Actually that's not true. 'KNORR' was an atonal, ostinato accompaniment to Puccini's famous aria 'Un bel di vedremo' (unsettling), whilst the opening of the medley 'KA-CHO-FU-GETSU' used a one-second sample of Holst's 'Mercury, the Winged Messenger' (bizarre).)

Technically I'm sure these are well-produced cues and idents. Perhaps they are even masterpieces of commercial music, who know. But they're a right bore to listen to in their own right.

Today, I was going to find some more hardcore techno to listen to. In the meantime, I deided to listen to Curtis Mayfield's first album. I had listened to Superfly and found it great, so I thought it could be a cool thing to listen to while doing a bit of research on techno.
I ended up listening to four albums of his in a row.
And most of it was incredible. Really.
I don't know how far Mayfield was involved in the composition and overall the instrumental side of things, but most of it is perfectly on-spot in nearly every case. Every song, really, every one of his songs finds a perfect balance between the huge presence of the lively instruments and the importance of the voice. Everything instrumental is written well enough to be listened to alone, but is always light enough not to overshadow the vocal aspect of the composition. And this is where things become great.
Mayfield is such a powerhouse of a songwriter and interpret, I don't think I can remember someone getting his way and delivering the message when he wants the way he does. the odd mix between gravity of topics and playfulness of the music itself creats a strange mix that still manages to work. Vivid descriptions, engaged writing, his texts make such a honest use of the vernacular and still convey eerything they need to, you may start to wonder why one would bothe with fanciness. when there is a point to make, Mayfield goes straight to the point and hits home.
But I guess I'll stop saying good thing about him for now. I need to relativize al lthat stuff, so disregard it for now.

I'm trying to think of that film Torts recommended that had no sound, story, no nothing, but I can't remember it. That one was something. And boring. You probably wouldn't want to sit through that anyway. Haneke's Cache is neat, watch that. It was really difficult to sit through the whole thing for me the first few times I watched it, but it's pretty rewarding in my opinion. Seventh Continent is also great. Great and devastating. I'd even say Kaufman's other films are "artsier" than Adaptation.

Today, I listened to Unwound – New Plastic Ideas.

Unwound were an Olympia, Washington band consisting of Justin Trosper as the vocalist and guitarist, Vern Rumsey on bass, and Sara Lund on drums. Known for their DIY ethic, playing at “all ages” clubs, and their experimental approaches to post-hardcore, they set their name as one of the more defining bands of the genre. For me, I only listened to Leaves Turn Inside You once in full and after that, I tend to just stick to “Look A Ghost”, “Terminus” or “Radio Gra”, some of my favourites. I decided to try their earlier work and New Plastic Ideas was the lucky contestant.

Man, this album is such a mess of genres: it’s part post-hardcore, part noise rock, part indie rock, a bit emo, and topped off with a slight post-rock edge. One thing that is immediately noticeable is that Trosper’s vocals are really pushed back into the background but are audible enough to hear his lyrics and emotion. The sound for this album is a bit accessible for the most part but Unwound still retain their edge; I find that they could have been on any alternative rock station in the 90’s and they won’t sound out of place considering the popularity of grunge at the time. I find the lyrics for this album very angry and reminiscent of emo, based on Trosper’s screaming lyrics like “Salt of the earth on an open wound” or “You’d make great fiction, you make great friction”; they really strike you hard.

Beginning with “Entirely Different Matters”, the guitar riffs, drumming, and the vocal delivery made this song a blast of an intro to this album. “Envelope”, another favourite, features Trosper singing in a slightly deadpan tone, “She won’t miss you if you let her.” That lyric is what made me think to consider this album as slightly emo because that’s heavy, especially when the follow-up is “I’m not scared to live inside a sealed envelope.” “Abstraktions” is the sole instrumental on this album and the longest song here; it feels more post-rock but with some somberness. I can hear what I think is synths in the background and I thought that was a nice touch, along being paired with the guitar riffs that sound chill.

The second half of this album is slightly more experimental. “All Souls Day” dives into more noisy guitars, “Usual Dosage”, a song about cocaine habits, has a subdued sound in the middle and is carried by these “metallic twinkles” generated by guitar (which I love a lot) and builds up to the chorus and back down to quiet until it repeats again, “Arboretum” experiments with a build-up in the middle by keeping it quiet and builds up until a crescendo; unfortunately, it was anticlimactic. The last track, “Fiction Friction”, might be my favourite for the lyrics. They confirm to me how powerful they are paired with the well-composed song, especially on the chorus.

Overall, this is a nice post-hardcore album that doesn’t go over the top but is great to hear. I don’t have much complaints about it though I can definitely say it’s not their best. I would like to get into more Unwound in the future so I can go for another album sometime down the road. But so far, I’m liking this band very much and here’s to hoping they will blow me out of water.

I'll be honest, I don't really know what you mean by postmodern. I'm looking at a number of definitions, and I don't see what's postmodern about Adaptation. It's been a while since I last saw it, that could be the problem. Maybe neither of those films I recommended are postmodern. They're still good though.

Well the sheer degree of reflexivity for one. The concept of a film that is about its own genesis is itself the broadest example but there were so many intertextual references and narrative games that it sort of got to me. Like when Cage is explaining to his 'twin' (also played by Cage) how clichéd multiple personality disorder is as a plot device; or when the screenwriting lecturer interrupts Cage's voiceover monologue to ridicule the idea of voiceovers. When I said 'most postmodern' I mean it embodies all those qualities of subversion and negation of traditional storytelling and texts more than any other film I've ever seen (Lyotard called this the 'incredulity towards metanarratives').

I've seen similar films that make the act of storytelling part of the story themselves, like Memento or Barton Fink, but this takes it to the next level.

Hello /daily/. I gave a listen to a Siekiera album today. The melodies were a bit repetitive and sort of boring, but the synth-heavy production along with the chanting Slavic vocals make this sound like a cool 80's Russian spy movie. Hence the good score.

No honestly, this album's aesthetic and pulsing energy is what makes this an enjoyable listen. Also, saying an album is "repetitive" is a common critique for a post-punk album that hasn't grown on me yet, so I expect Nowa Aleksandria to do just that.

The day with its cares and perplexities is ended and the night is now upon us. The night should be a time of peace and tranquility, a time to relax and be calm. We have need of a soothing story to banish the disturbing thoughts of the day, to set at rest our troubled minds, and put at ease our ruffled spirits.

And what sort of story shall we hear ? Ah, it will be a familiar story, a story that is so very, very old, and yet it is so new. It is the old, old story of love.

Two lovers sat on a park bench with their bodies touching each other, holding hands in the moonlight.

There was silence between them. So profound was theire love for each other, they needed no words to express it. And so they sat in silence, on a park bench, with their bodies touching, holding hands in the moonlight.

Finally she spoke. "Do you love me, John ?" she asked. "You know I love you. darling," he replied. "I love you more than tongue can tell. You are the light of my life. my sun. moon and stars. You are my everything. Without you I have no reason for being."

Again there was silence as the two lovers sat on a park bench, their bodies touching, holding handls in the moonlight. Once more she spoke. "How much do you love me, John ?" she asked. He answered : "How' much do I love you ? Count the stars in the sky. Measure the waters of the oceans with a teaspoon. Number the grains of sand on the sea shore. Impossible, you say. Yes and it is just as impossible for me to say how much I love you.

"My love for you is higher than the heavens, deeper than Hades, and broader than the earth. It has no limits, no bounds. Everything must have an ending except my love for you."

There was more of silence as the two lovers sat on a park bench with their bodies touching, holding hands in the moonlight.

Once more her voice was heard. "Kiss me, John" she implored. And leaning over, he pressed his lips warmly to hers in fervent osculation...

I don't think I've ever not said something I meant to say just because of a trip. I mean, I shat on one of your favorite albums and although I feel kinda bad for telling people I don't like their favorites as much as them that would happen to an anonymous user as well. Anyway I'm surprised I didn't liked Out for Lunch. It has great melodies and the drumming is nice but I drifted off of it so easily. Maybe it's my state of mind. I thought of doing Jazz January to explore the genre but I don't know yet when I'll be home.

This was fun. We should insult each other more often.

Also, back to listening to /daily/! Listened to Planet Rock. Nice funky album that had clear influence in hip hop, to the point where I would consider it kind of a hip hop album. Lyrics are very cliche of the early works of the genre, and the whole funky style was starting to become less fun towards the end, but it's enjoyable still.

Surprise on an "Average" Ujubasajuba. I can take a good but average is a bit too low imo.

It is a predictable emergence the fusion of genres that Ujubasajuba "compiled", but it doesn't mean it is Average on doing so. Valuable and needed effort.

Ujubasajuba is nothing new in any sense, they just mixed up a bunch relevant ingredients that haven't been put together yet. It is a healthy mixture, not something that is looking ahead, but makes a statement of what can come forward in a near time.

I supposed you value Ujubasajuba higher than albums like The War On Drugs that recycle "past stuff" for the purpose of new "past stuff". If The War On Drugs is lower than Ujubasajuba than it is prolly the way your rating system works, if not than state your view for me.

Anyway, I haven't given a solid listen to it but overhearing it I'd say it is very good

>why Tago is better to you than Future Days
This is actually a tough one because they're very close to each other. The main reason why I prefer Tago Mago is because of the experience it gives you. While Future Days gives you an ethereal and tropical experience, Tago gives you one of despair and spirituality. Both are very ambitious but Tago Mago has a clear edge over Future Days with it's experiments in noise, musique concrete, and it's sparse soundscapes. Lyricism, while most of the time difficult to understand is more relatable and has deeper meaning than Future Days'

Spiderland has fantastic and relatable lyricism "Don woke up / And looked at the night before / He knew what he had to do / He was responsible / In the mirror / He saw his friend". The LOUDquiet dynamic on the album is also flawlessly realized. The guitar work is very good, and the feel of the album can change very quickly along with it. Not going to write too much else here because there are very many other nuances in the album that are hard to pick out without having heard it lately.

I'm not going to rate HOOM yet, it's above an 8 for sure though, but I haven't fully listened to it in a long time and I don't want to give a concrete rating so long after I experienced it.

>>52390983
God, this album was incredibly boring, I always felt like the drones were leading up to something, but they never did. Niblock executes drone much better, in Touch Food and Four Full Flutes the drones feel like they have a fully realized purpose and aren't just there to be there.

>>52391249
My rating for that is a 5.5/10 so a bit above average
Ujubasajuba doesn't seem to have a defined purpose or concept, that was my main gripe with it. It combines a watered down Flying Saucer Attack, MBV, GYBE, and sometimes a bit of Alcest's later releases, that just doesn't resonate well with me.

Oh, misread it then. Anyway, the flavour of Ujubasajuba is grasping all those influences in a whole, well, not really a congruent one, more like they explore what the music those guys have been making and make an excellent effort in putting it together.

What the hell do you expect drones to lead up to? Drones don't go anywhere, they just are, if you hear a drone that goes somewhere, you're not hearing a drone. This is the kind of criticism why I said what I said. What you say either doesn't make any kind of sense, or it's just weasel words that are impossible to adress. What am I supposed to do with you feeling like the drones on Morals and Dogma are just there to be there? I can, and I will say that I feel they're not, and we're none the wiser. With this level of criticism it's really difficult to engage in any sort of discussion. This isn't even criticism, you didn't give any reasons why you didn't like it, you just said you don't like it in two mid lenght sentences. If you posted this when we weren't doing /mu/ things, I would just go about my day, even though I strongly disagree, because I don't have the ability to properly communicate what I see in this album, and right now it seems you don't either. I could say "I strongly disagree", but that would be the end of the discussion, and a discussion like that isn't worth having. To refer back to the Buyer's Market arguement, there I had things to say, and whoever I was arguing with did as well. In this case, and in all cases where I choose not to post anything, I don't, and in most cases, neither does the person I'd like to reply to.

Rant part 1 over.. I don't have a problem with you still, make no mistake. I wouldn't even say I'm angry, precisely because of everything I wrote above. That's your unfounded opinion, and I have a different unfounded opinion. But your reviewing skills are nothing to write home about, and I often feel like you're not fully aware of that. If you are, I apologise, but you come off a little strong sometimes. I'm no professional either, so I have no right to judge, but at least I'm conscious of the fact that I'm only a clueless and opinionated twat wasting away on an anime image board.

Continued, because we /mu/ now, and that means walls of text.

However, you are right about one thing. Not what you wrote in that particular post, but about how posting with a trip can affect our posts. If we weren't being painfully honest for the sake of being painfully honest right now, I would post this with a trip on. Not because I'm afraid of offending you, because I trust you can take something like this, but because there's always the possibility that I'm completely off the mark here. Everything I took the time and effort to write could be bullshit, and I could realise that after thinking it through a couple more times. I'm not a hundred percent convinced of everything I just wrote, so at the very least I would really consider not posting this, and I probably wouldn't. Just this time though, I did post it. Now tell me why I'm wrong, or just wait for me to figure it out by myself two hours later.
