Like one anon said, out of all shit he released after Holy Wood, this new album is at the top of the pile. It's as if he's fully realized/signposted a new era of MM being an alternative pop type group (like later Cure but with a more sinister edge) that he had failed to explore properly beforehand. (EMDM, THEOL, BV)
This should have been the follow-up to Mechanical Animals, or at the very least, Holy Wood (he regressed and disappointed here, but shows signs of what I'm about to say next). The Holy Wood acoustic performance and the general sound to 1/2 that album, along with his really strong interest in The Doors starting around that time really do make it seem like he's always had a part of him wanting to delve into this sound, but kept fucking it up prior. Manson found the blues and it feels like the blues lead him back to his soul. But you don’t need to know about the behind the scenes influences to hear it in the record. The blues guitars are there, so are the rhythmic shuffle stomps. They’re mixed with sleazy funk bass lines and keyboard flourishes, but the thing that really jumps out from the first track moving forward are the vocals. As damaged as its become, it sounds better than EMDM, THEOL & BV. Manson isn’t kidding when he says he’s changed the way he sings. He’s found something that’s been sorely missing for most of his recent output: melody. He’s also connecting emotionally with the listener, and has dropped a lot of the cringeworthy posturing (not all, but enough for once) in his lyrics from the 10 years of records. |
