This is fucking god-tier prog.

The first album featuring Collins as the singer, but it still sounds like classic, proggy Genesis at their best.

Don't know what most of the prog fans here think of them, but The Dark Third by Pure Reason Revolution is pretty damn good imo.

Uh. I haven't listened to prog for a few years so I never was in with the /mu/ shit so maybe you guys haven't heard of these

Spock's Beard (plenty of releases, all solid), Enchant (a bit cheesy but that's all prog), Deja Vu (older band, overshadowed, quality shit, catchy too), Beardfish (newer, kind of fun), and uhm.
I deleted most mine I guess.... Used to be all I listen to then I deleted half it.

Ayreon? Have you listened to them?
Uh. Human Equation.

And Dream Theater gets shit on but they aren't bad if you don't think you're some intellectual for listening to them, they make fun melodic-as-fuck music with good energy.

Listen to the top three rows of this chart, at least.

The rest is up for much debate, this was made by one tripfag but a few of us (me included), don't really like some of the modern prog choices. The picks for the 70's are solid though.

Porcupine Tree, Riverside and Mars Volta are best for modern

What are you, gay?

Alright, I'm not sure what exactly you dig, so here are all the proggy artists I listen to:
>Ayreon
>Captain Beefheart
>Blotted Science
>Behold The Arctopus
>Car Bomb
>Derek Sherinian
>Virgil Donati
>Planet X
>Haken
>Neal Morse
>The Mothers of Invention

Of those, I'd recommend Planet X, Haken, Car Bomb, Captain Beefheart, and the Mothers of Invention. However, they're all fantastic in their own right.

>> No.52049512

>>52049474
Ehhhhhh very little of that is to my taste. I like maybe half of an Ayreon record and a couple of Morse's solo ones. And Haken, they're great.

Transatlantic and Flower Kings are just the combination of the worst stereotypes of prog, overblown and pretentious, with "complex" music that is just shitty soloing in 7/8 the whole time and song structures that are basically "lets make this long because long = good, right?"

Not to mention all of their melodies and keyboard patches are campy as fuck. I like my prog (even the non-metal) to have some grit and some punch, none of the modern symphonic bands do that for me, it's just not exciting.

>Derek Sherinian and Planet X

Blows the fuck out of Dream Theater.

>> No.52049599

>>52049512
That's fair; I enjoy TFK and Transatlantic specifically because of the campiness. I don't have too much in the line of prog metal besides the Car Bomb, Dream Theater, Blotted Science, and "Larks'"-era King Crimson, so I'm not much help here.

>>52049530
Fuck yeah it does.

The Light is a great album.

>> No.52050006

I'm a huge Neal Morse fan but some of his stuff is a little stagnated. TFK have released a couple of good records.

I don't really have a problem with Transatlantic - they're under no pretence whatsoever that the music is anything but ridiculous (hence the 1hr 17min runtime of all their albums).

But yeah, if you want to find good modern symphonic prog look at Spock's Beard. For the other side of the coin listen to some Steven Wilson.
