***IF YOU'RE NEW, AND WOULD LIKE TO JOIN, READ THIS FIRST!***

It's the 1nd of November

The point of these threads, is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this, by listening to, and ideally, discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture out of their comfort zone by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.
We track our progress using calendars, which we fill with the albums we listen to on each day, and a rating of some sort for all of them. There are templates in the following posts. We encourage you to write the albums' titles, and the artists' names somewhere on your calendar. We don't have any tools for creating these calendars, we use simple image editing softwares.
You can predetermine a schedule for a month, or you can report back on whatever album you randomly picked every day. Many of us make our schedules interesting in various way, popular ones being genre restrictions, new releases, and recs from the /daily/ community.

We used to do listen alongs, but we don't really have the time anymore. For this, we had a plug.dj room, which we still use occasionally to hang out for a little while. It's usually empty, so if you want to spend a little time there, post in the thread, there most likely will be someone up for it. You can find it here:

In case plug.dj is not working, we have a backup wavelenght room. You can find that here:
>wavelength.fm/stripey's

The threads usually start around 15:00 GMT. Anyone can start the threads, but usually one of /daily/'s dedicated trips starts them. If the thread is not yet up by 15:30 GMT, we encourage you to start it, just be sure to use the standard OP. Of course you can start it earlier than that too.

Most importantly, have fun!

First actual review, please don't hate too much.

Album begins with a building drone noise and whispered vocals on "Ceasuri Reli" into wailing, before exploding on "Tesarul De Lumin," the longest track of the album at 12:48. The backing drone/ambient noises from the first track disappear after a few minutes as it goes into a long instrumental movement with excellent drumming and guitar arrangements.

The singer starts again and the song picks up even more energy. Afterwards, prominent backing synthesizers come back into the song before fading out again with the vocals. The song ends after a few more minutes of varied guitar and drums.

Track 3, "Primul OM," opens up with a spoken word intro into a dark ambient esque chorus of voices pressed on backing drone and synthesizers. The song adds even more dreamy textures before fading out into another hard-hitting song, "Cunoasterea Tăcută," which features even more synthesizer use and erratic guitars alongside consistent percussion.

A lot of this album seems to be mixed atmospheric sections with a lot of synthesizer use transitioning into more typical black metal, and "Înarborat" continues that trend. At this point, I have to say the drumming on this album is one of the best parts, it's on-point and interesting, but no part of the album has been disinteresting.

"Dedesuptul" continues the heavy riffs, before breaking down into a more atmospheric section with solo guitar and more synthesizer effects, making another shift to a darker sound, which crescendos before fading out to the pounding of drums into "Norilor," which continues the atmospheric sound with quickening drumming and dramatic synthesizers. One of the best tracks on the album so far.

The album shifts back to heavy riffs and wailing vocals in "De Piatră." Towards the end of the song, the backing synthesizers alongside a spoken word vocal against his singing create one of the best moments in the album.

Transition to "Cel Din Urmă Vis," which starts out slow with a solo guitar against one playing the same chord progression over and over. After a few minutes of metal, it cuts back to an ambient section, which felt more bland than the other ambient/synthesizer sections in the album. However, the transition again to metal, with a very prominent synthesizer overlaying pounding guitar riffs was great. This takes the spot as the second-longest track of the album at 10:04.

The black metal continues with "Hora Soarelui," although it transitions into a mix of woodwind (I believe solo flute) and traditional singing against typical metal drumming that's very interesting to listen to. Eventually the guitars come back in as the song ends in black metal style. A part of me wishes the flute had been played all track.

Finally, the last track, "Al Doilea Om," begins, which starts in much the same style that "Primul OM" did and ends the album with it. A sort of unsatisfying conclusion to an otherwise good album. I felt like the atmospheric/ambient sections really shined more than the metal sections and wish they could have incorporated the two together more rather than keeping them separate most of the time. Still an enjoyable listen. 3.5/5.

New month, yaaaay.
Anyway, today, I listened to the first album I saw posted on /mu/, Source Tags & Codes by ... And you will know us by the trail of dead, also known ad simply Trail of Dead.
The album was posted with mention of it getting a good score on Pitchfork, and that was already an indication of what it could sound like, to some extend.
After full listen, I have my serious silly question for the day : is calling your music "indie rock" a way to justify that your tenor singer cannot sing correctly?
Because that is the main thing in my mind after listening to the album.
Instrumentaly speaking, the album is not especially good, neither is it bad. It starts of with a very good couple of songs that manage to build up some energy and grow in intensity, but all of this falls right after. It doesn't take long that every song is composed arround the same structure (an introduction that may or may not incorporate some "unusual" instruments and then a constant creshendo powered by lightly distorded guitars) and said structure is not exactly captivating enough. It could be in the instrumentation varied more, if the instruments were not played with such a linear flow and had some kind of variation (though the drums offer some of it at some point, but not enough to make a 6 minutes creshendo interesting).
But this alone would not be as much of a problem if the vocal parts were handled with more skill. Not passion or emotion, infact you do get quite a bit of it here and there, but despite this the singing simply comes of as clumsy or amateurish. we have yet another high-pitched voice that sings too loud for its own good, always on the verge of breaking or screaming in a typical early-2000s fashion.
In the end, bth the vocal and instrumental sides of the album sound incomplete, as if both needed each other to compliment itself, but neither is actually good enough to do so.

(also, taking recs for some black metal)

>>51084541
The main problem here is that you don't really get the "epic" feeling you usually associate with creshendo, mostly because the composition doesn't really manage it correctly. the songs start loud and are still not bold enough to finish with a completely maximal freakout. So you do not have much evolution in the volume.
The colours and texures of the tracks do not really vary that much either. The only thing that could really describe the raising intensity here would be to say that the songs get "busier" with time. It does work in some cases (again, the first two tracks really do this recipe justice) but when you realize that everything works this way, it gets boring.
Still, it's an interesting listen since it does show how to make some songs evolve.

(I'm also pretty much impermeable to that style of singing and instrumental, so you could easily find the whole thing more interesting and passionate than I did. After all, this album did get Pitchfork's 10/10;..)

You're not required to seed. I gauge artist popularity based on how many snatches (complete downloads) their specific albums got. This can be a little imbalanced for 2011-now albums since they garner more attention when entering the top 10/100, etc. There's no official ratings, just an upvote/downvote on each page, which usually doesn't have much. For example, this Rotting Christ album (I'm listening to Thy Mighty Contract now btw), has 300 snatches but only 4 votes total, all of which are upvotes.

Maybe attempt the album again but focus on the singles? Listening to stuff like Accordion, Raid, Meat Grinder, All Caps, and Fancy Clown while focusing mainly on DOOM's wordplay

Explosions in the Sky's first full-length attempt to bring GY!BE's drama and dynamics to a traditional four-piece rock band format and sadly, I felt it failed at this for me in multiple respects. The first thing I noticed throughout this album that the intros always seem promising before this really weird songwriting kick in, after which the song loses itself into odd, angular dynamics that just seem unfitting for this brand of post-rock and chord progressions that quite frankly just rub me the wrong way. Explosions in the Sky either break into loud passage without any prior tension or build-up, or they slowly and lazily plod their way towards a crescendo that suddenly ends without any satisfactory release, something that has been bothering me throughout the entire album. It tries to be exciting, but the repitition and predictability just made me feel bored.

It's not all bad however. For one, the instrumentation is competent and here and there the band actually gets some good chemistry going. For example, about two and a half minutes into the last track there's a rush of tension and drama (and they actually seem to be getting pretty into it as well!) which I felt had been lacking throughout the entire album. But then it suddenly janks back to inoffensive twinkly guitars before creeping into the same sort of slow crescendo that has already been played out so many times before on this album. The potential is there, but not utilized nearly enough.

Had a nice experience listening to Homogenic last night, started listening at one in the night, because the halloween party was delayed. Looking forward to finally getting around to listening to Welcome to Sky Valley tomorrow.

Anyway here's my attempt at a review of Homogenic:
I'm sure you're all familiar with this one. I had only heard bits and pieces from this album from before, which I liked pretty well. So this was naturally one of my first choices when i decided to do this an-album-a-day-thing. Now i'm not sure if this was the purpose of this record, I know that some songs where written after breakups and something like that. But the entire record seems to be the entire course of one relationship, hunting, wonderful being in a state of emergency, love unravels, bachelorette obviously, the confusing days that come after, cursing him in 5 years, self reflection, enlightenment, change, hope. I don't wanna call it a story, but anyways, it's all set in a beautifully arranged and organized state of chaos. The main attraction is of course the voice of the artist herself. Which ranges from fragile to churning rage, but it never skips a beat void of passion. Which i think should be an element in any art pop experiment. I can't say I was in any way surprised by this record really, "Bachelorette" remains a favourite for my part with those wonderful screams at the end. "All Neon Like" is probably my least favourite song, but definitely not a bad song, and the first track where Bjork's vocal diversity is properly shown. It's safe to say that this album could become a favourite after a couple of listens, as i think one's grasp of this record just gets better for each time you listen to it. The production is incredibly layered and detailed, not to mention that if you take the instrumentals on their own you could rap over them and it would probably make for a pretty interesting project (if it hasn't been done already).

Well, this month could've had a better opening. The Russian Kauan's Aava Tuulen Maa (why do they sing in Finnish?) isn't as "bad" as my score might suggest, in a way. The instrumentation quality is alright and the songwriting doesn't have any moments that really make you think "what the hell are they doing now?"

The problem is that it's completely directionless. It's an ambient/post-rock album that has a guitar tone remniscent of Agalloch's The Mantle, and a lot of repetition is used. The problem is that most tracks on this album are 10 minutes long and they don't really seem to go anywhere. There's no master plan behind the songwriting. There's some crescendo's here and there, a few okay rhythms that progress a little bit, but nothing of worth happens.

And it's a damn shame, because the instrumentation itself is really not all that bad. The violin work is decent, the guitar tone is nice, the ambient effects are good, but it's all come together in such a musically braindead fashion that it really doesn't invite you into repeated listens. The album noodles along without the charm of a jam band. It's just aimlessly drifting in an ocean without a paddle. Ugh. Such a waste.

Nevermind myself. I fucking love this album.

I just needed to give it some more listens, take the lyrics less seriously (just have fun with the flourishes and shit instead of looking for a message) and let Doom's rapping just flow however it flows.

Holy shit it I'm suddenly getting it and I can't fathom how I didn't a mere 2 hours ago.

Music, art and humans are so incoherent.

November /daily/: /mu/core Day 1: Feel the Illinoise

I've never been to Illinois. I'd like to one day, though. If the state is anything like this album leads me to believe it is, I'd fall in love with it.

There's something about the design of this record that lures me into it. I say "design" because I feel like Illinois, more than other singer-songwriter record of the oughts I've come across, feels as though it was crafted in a way similar to a large painting, with intricacy and dedication. The orchestrations create layers on every song that are wonderful to peel away. The depth of songs like Chicago or Feel the Illinoise or The Man of Metropolis, with their choirs and pianos and trumpets and strings, has yet to be matched by any other musician in Sufjan Stevens' line of work.

That's not even mentioning the variety of song structures employed here. The minute-and-a-half little interludes are just as engaging as the five-minutes-or-more romps, and these different track times work well with one another, serving as a way to get from place to place. It really does feel like Stevens is taking his listeners on a tour of the state of Illinois.

I wish more records were like this. As it stands, not many other songwriters or even full bands are able to achieve the craftsmanship of what's on display here. I'm not saying every album made today needs to be some lofty conceptual 70+ minute mind-awakening experience, but maybe Stevens' contemporaries ought to take some notes.

I'm really quite glad I started my November chart with this album, as it's sure to become an all-time favorite of mine. It's rare that I love an album from first listen like this. Hopefully it sets the tone for the rest of the month.

like most of albums, completely okay, nothing better, nothing worse. i will say that the beats are better, but hodgy is nowhere as near as good of a rapper as earl, or as interesting as tyler. hodgy kinda lacks an urgency or any sense of problems, and when he does its mostly a really vague story about a girl

ok here goes nothing,
I listened to old skete by steven r. smith and it wasn't what at i was expecting, it comes closer to drone than to psych folk, although the few parts of this are very pleasant, the opening is a step ahead of the following tracks, that's why the a side is weaker than the b side, where you find with four comforting tracks following each other (6 to 9), the track #10 has a great ending and would've been perfect for finishing the album, shame theres another filler at the end

I listened to Autechre - Tri Reptae yesterday, but it wasn't the most concentrated listen, so i don't know if this grade is fair or not. I wasn't too fond of it overall though. Best bleep album was definitely the Underworld one, great album.

I guess i'll make a top 5 as well, since that's what everyone else has done, and i want to fit in.

5. Alxender von Schlippenbach Trio - Pakistani Pomade
Pretty chaotic and very free, free jazz.

4. Peter Brötzmann - Machine Gun
Extremely noisy free jazz album. Probably a good starting point for noise enthusiasts wanting to get into jazz.

3. Moondog - Moondog
Beautiful minimalism, not as strange as you would think

2. Harry Partch - The Delusion of the Fury
Very strange outsider modern classical.

1. Dave Holland Quartet - Confidence of the Birds
Absolutely amazing avant-garde/free jazz album.

Honorable mention: Muzsikás - Nem arról hajnallik, amerről hajnallott.

Today I listened to U2's debut album: Boy.

This is a post-punk album which got critical acclaim on release and an album I was very excited to hear because I like most post-punk and I wanted to hear U2's roots before they annoyed every Apple user in the world.

I was disappointed. I know post-punk isn't the most lively genre but half of these songs sounded so bland and they almost put me to sleep. Outside of a few standout tracks the rest of the album just blends in into a forgettable bland rock mixture.

The last track is really good and I liked one or two more but all in all, this seemed as boring as U2's current material, although here I can find more redeeming qualities.

Excited for Comfy Sunday though!

That is basically what it is, hardcore with black metal influences. It definitely isn't for everyone.

Today i listened to Eric B. & Rakim's Paid in Full. I'm not completely new to hiphop, but most of what i've heard has been either 90s classics or more recent stuff, i've never really listened to golden age hiphop before today. The sound of this album seems a lot more stripped down than most of the rap i've listened to. It's mostly a simple beat, a couple of samples and some scratching. Fortunately it works very well most of the time, though it doe's get a bit boring for my tastes. I really enjoy the rapping, and i think the flow and the rhymes are really good. Apparently this is some sort of landmark record, especially with concern to the rhyming aspect, and i guess that makes sense. It's a good album, but i'm not totally crazy about it yet, maybe that will come with more listens, or maybe it will come when i get a greater understanding of rap music and history, so i'll be able to actually see how influential this supposedly is.

And i finally finished my November chart, thoughts on it would be wonderful.

Also i saw Shellac play two days ago, and it was absolutely amazing. Fantastic live band.

Today I listened to The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream.
I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this record; the tags on Rate Your Music had it tagged as "Heartland Rock" and "Indie Rock" which, if those aren't two of the most goddamn ambiguous terms I've ever heard, I've never heard any. Discogs proved as helpful as before, but this time it was tagged simply as "Rock" which was pretty bullshit. So I went into this album with no predispositions at all, my hands practically covering my eyes. I suppose I was kind of setting myself up for disappointment though, because, in attempting to remain a purist without any expectations of what this album could be, I subconsciously hyped myself up more than if I knew what to expect.
Lost in the Dream sounds like the 80's puked over a balcony into 2014, with post-punky drums, celestial synths, and dream pop-like guitar all mashed together into one. With all these instruments slammed into one, it almost feels as if The War on Drugs set out to tap into the nostalgia of soccer moms everywhere than to create a genuinely interesting record. An Ocean Between the Waves sounds like Adam Granduciel decided he would sneak into Johan Lindell's house, steal his songbook, and make it sound a little more dream-pop-ish. The tracks at the album's heart, like Suffering and Disappearing, are so soul-less that they seem like the band actually tried to make filler over songs with substance. There were a few tracks I did find myself enjoying quite a bit, such as Eyes to the Wind and Under the Pressure, where the group brings the track closer to present day with acoustic guitars and somewhat new, cleaned-off ideas to it. The band has a lot of skill and potential, but the execution of that skill on this record did not shine through quite as it should have.
I feel like my mother would have enjoyed this record more than I did.
It's still gotta be my album of the week though because there's only one album this week.
4/10

>Lidless Eye - Death Perverser
>noise, psychedelic

A pretty standard fair of psychedelic noise, an hour of chaotic meditation. Sort of reminds me of Wolf-Eye's but without any vocals, has sort of basement show vibe to it, and not as aggressive.

It's not bad and could at times be comfy, there is also plenty of build up through this album to keep things interesting. I would recommend this to long time fans of noise.

Hi guys.
Today's album was And The Glass Handed Kites by Mew. Being really picky about prog rock, I didn't expect too much of it but it was surprisingly good. I''m a bit on the fence about the vocals though. I'm shit at writing cohesive review so I'll just paste what I typed while listening to it:

- Guitars sound nice and thick without being over the top distorted.
- Synth sounds are kinda cheesy but they fit well.
- Main riff of Circuitry of the Wolf is fucking amazing.
- Songs flow into each other very well.
- The singer sounds like a fucking pre-pubescent girl.
- Apocalypso is the first song since the opening track that really grabs my attention. The verse riff sounds very nice and angular. Chorus is glorious.
- Special's got a nice groove to it.
- The vocal melodies on The Zookeeper's Boy are very pretty.
- The piano breakdown in Saviours of Jazz Ballet is a nice surprise.
- An Envoy to the Open Fields is pretty groovy. The bass is surprisingly prominent. The twinkly guitars and glockenspiel in the back of the mix are a nice touch. The backing vocals are very well executed.
- The intro in The Seething Rain Weeps for You should've gone on longer, it's the best part of the song and it's cut off after fucking five seconds.
- Louise Louisa is kind of an underwhelming closer. The ballad part was kind of inoffensive. The buildup towards the climax is executed very sloppily and the climax itself isn't all that impressive. Ending with three minutes of just synths and vocals is kind of a weird choice, I would've expected this album to end with a fucking bang.

7,5/10. Very enjoyable and certainly worth revisiting.

Kicking off the month with Linda Perhacs' Parallelograms

Parallelograms was released back in 1970, and immediately after the release, Perhacs disappeared from the music scene. The album's psychedelic chamber folk could fit in nicely with the scene at the time of it's release, as well as today's neo-psychedelia, and "indie folk" acts. I don't really know what to say about it, there's not much to analyse here apart from the playing, songwriting and singing, all of which I know nothing about. Maybe a thing or two I can shoehorn in: Perhacs' voice is often multitracked, harmonising with itself, wich is nice. Apart from the instruments the band brings, such as flutes, drums, bass, and her own guitar, there are additional manipulated sounds added for psychedelic effects, or to mimick nature sounds. And last but not least, I love her voice. Also, it seems I downloaded a remaster with bonus tracks, demos, that kind of stuff, and they're quite nice as well. It has a voice message by Perhacs to the record company, and a short excerpt from an interview, both of which are cute as hell.
8/10 according to some dumb cunt.

Shitty review, but at least I wrote something. That's what really counts.

Today, I listened to Godflesh – Streetcleaner.

Godflesh is the well-known influential project with Justin Broadrick and G.C. Green being the only consistent members involved. They went on hiatus so Justin could focus on the more shoegazey Jesu which continued Godflesh’s legacy as a heavy and dark metal band. I have heard Techno Animal and Jesu and enjoyed both of them a lot so it sounds like the right time to hear where all of this began.

Streetcleaner was kind of what I expected Godflesh would sound like: heavy, angry, and dark. I like those qualities a lot but my main concern was the more-focused attention towards the sound of this album as opposed to the songwriting. I love the sound and all but I was expecting them to write some heavy riffs and be more aggressive. I understand that Swans’ early material (Filth, Cop) influenced this band, along with Whitehouse, Brian Eno, and Black Sabbath (though I barely hear Whitehouse or Eno here) but Godflesh could have made something more hard-hitting than basically re-making early Swans within the limits of a structure of a metal song.

The main characteristics of Godflesh (at least from this album alone) are heavy guitar tones, heavy bass, beefy riffs, and a precise and sharp drum machine. I really appreciate the drum machine here a lot from its accuracy and how well it fits in at the right moment. The bass and guitar both sound heavy and the early Swans influence really assisted this sound immensely; even the vocal deliveries are structured in the same minimal fashion as Gira’s. However, the vocals are supposed to sound guttural but they come off as silly and forced which ruins the atmosphere of this album and a few songs are drawn out for way too long, thus making me lose my interest quickly.

I had high expectations for this album but unfortunately, it didn’t meet my expectations. It was one of those cases where the main focus is sound and relies only on that to achieve a result. It is not a bad idea by all means but it could have been better. I assume Godflesh continued making improvements to this sound in their later albums and side-projects but for now, it’s just an album that experiments.

Shortwave Nights is for the most part an uninspired mess of soundscapes that tries way too hard to be a godspeed album (right down to having the trademark sad old man monologue).

The average track on this album is 5+ minutes of poorly made drone with some slow strings or synths over the top that builds up to a mediocre ambient piece and then regresses back to shitty drone. The only track that actually created an interesting atmosphere was "for the transient projectionist", a track I would actually encourage you to listen to. Aside from this specific track the only good thing I can say about the album was that it was somewhat varied for a drone album and each song had its own clear identity. The last 3 tracks sound like they belong on a demo tape, out of these tracks only the aptly named "test recording at trembling city" was not complete shit, and only because it had a nice climax about three quarters of the way through.

Overall I would recommend this album to anyone who has self-loathing issues. 2/10

>Adrian Belew - Lone Rhino
Now keep in mind through out this that I haven't listened to 80's Crimson stuff he was a part of ,don't know what Zappa he was a part of (And havn't listened to much Zappa beyond the 60's stuff anyway.) And I listened to Remain in light which he was probably a part of a long time ago and barely remember it.
Now I mainly know this guy was part of those bands through Research and looking at reviews.
Anyway onto the album:
It's a rather decidedly new wave style affair that making sense given he was a part of those aforementioned bands along with David Bowie as either a member or a session musician.
Though it does contain some ambient style instrumentals.
Though one thing I like about this album is the guitar tones.
Something I normally don't care too much about here but on this album he pulls out some crazy guitar noises particularly on Big Electric Cat and The Lone Rhinoceros.
Also I say the album when it goes into proggier modes is great too.
Rather enjoyable should have sat down for this one much earlier instead of just skimming the first couple tracks.

So, I accept the fundamentally chaotic nature of life. Some things come, some things go! We all know this. But when it comes to Mayhem's "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas", it's all go. It's like, most albums always just keep telling you to give give give and this masterwork of riffage stares you in the face and is just all "No, sir. Today I take."

And boy does it ever take. It takes tons of effort to get those vocals to seep into your marrow, but when they start to resonate it really works. I can't think of a riff on this album that I didn't remember. All of the drum lines where very rhythmic. Altogether a great work of metal. It plagues the mind with petty things, for sure, but sometimes you just have to stop and smell the steel roses.

Strictly better than Transilvanian Hunger.

Today I listened to an album called "Leap in the Dark" by saxophonist Jurgen Hagenlocher which was recorded in 2012.

I've never heard Hagenlocher before, but I found this album because I'm very familiar with the rest of the band which consists of Alex Sipiagin on trumpet, David Kikoski on keys, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Nate Smith on drums. Needless to say, I'm mostly interested in this album to appease my Sipiagin boner.

The album starts off on an energetic number called Pollyanna, with Kikoski on rhodes piano. The horn melody is intricate and syncopated and moves smoothly between unison and harmonized lines. Sipiagin's and Kikoski's solos are excellent, as is the rhythm section behind them. Hagenlocher has an interesting tone that I still haven't made up my mind about. It's husky and breathy with the slightest hint of vibrato. His playing reminds me in some ways of Wayne Shorter's. The second tune, "Myth of the Dreamcatcher" is a moderately paced straight eighth ballad. It's clear that Hagenlocher has a talent for expansive, episodic composition, led by melodies that grow in tone and complexity. The tune starts out with a nice bass solo, then the solos grow in intensity from there. On this tune Hagenlocher reminds me much more of Joe Henderson that Wayne Shorter and I think his earthy tone works very well on this harmonically complex, but conservatively paced tune.

>> No.51093640

>>51093607
The title track is a 10/8 vamp with an extended melody and countermelody between the two horns. The style of composition is similar to Sipiagin's own style, and the driving bassline and colorful harmonic work from Kikoski on the rhodes make this a fantastic backdrop for the horns to solo over. Just as I was beginning to think that the rhythm section was starting to let the groove become stagnant during Hagenlocher's solo, they shifted the texture and brought the energy down leading into a fantastic solo from Kikoski that brings the energy back up to finish out the tune. "Corruptionists" starts with an open drum solo that leads to a tight, uptempo swing feel. The solos are compelling (especially Sipiagin's), but I can't help but feel that the rhythm section almost sounds a bit "sterile" at times. "April's Mood" is a flowing ballad that I wasn't a huge fan of at first, but the tune won me over as it progressed. There are brief sections where Hagenlocher and Sipiagin improvise together, which are nice, but they are too brief in my opinion, and I would like to hear them improvising cooperatively and really taking the time to develop some ideas. Sipiagin's dark, but mellow flugelhorn tone sounds fantastic on this tune all by itself though.

"Turmoils" is another uptempo swinger that reminds me of the style of music played by people like Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Wheeler, or Kenny Garrett in the late 70's. "Dark Turns Bright" is a delicate ballad that does indeed start with dark, yet colorful harmony and a captivating melody. The way the melody relates to the chords and tends to land on upper extensions of the chords reminds me of the Wayne Shorter approach to ballad writing. The album closer, "Step by Step" has an oddly disjointed melody and piano accompaniment over top of a medium-up swing. It's a fun way to end the album, though once again Hagenlocher and Sipiagin tease as though they're going to solo together but never do for very long.

>> No.51093662

>>51093640
All in all, this is some really good music. It's post-bop that's clearly rooted in the style of the 70's and 60's masters of the music, but the well-crafted original material also has a distinctly modern sound that comes from its advanced harmonic and melodic structures. Hagenlocher probably wouldn't be up very high on my list of favorite saxophonists, but he is certainly a more than capable player, and my less-enthusiastic of his playing stems mostly from his tone, which is really just a matter of personal preference. Probably my biggest complaint about this album would be with the rhythm section letting the feel of the music become slightly stagnant every once in a while. It only happened a few times through the album, and overall their playing was exceptionally good. Hagenlocher clearly has a talent for complex, polyphonic melody writing, and I'd love to see his talents improve and mature further. This album is definitely worth hearing.

One of my favorite Animal Collective albums is Feels. It's got the same songwriting style that Sung Tongs had, but with more lush instrumentation. One of the best features was the tonally incorrect instruments, and another was the beautiful piano embellishments.

No surprise then, that La Monte Young would satisfy me with his off-tune device today. Five hours of sound that at times sounded like it could be my favorite doorbell. At the two-hour mark, the piece takes a strange turn, when Young plays the lower tones, but it still sounds harmonious. It fades in and out and keeps my interest most of the time. Good listen, though I'm less likely to remember it the way I have remembered Steve Reich's Drumming or Terry Riley's Rainbow in Curved Air. Hope the other minimalist pieces I listen to this month are even better.

Today I listened to Hella - Hold Your Horse Is

The album starts with The D. Elkan, a glitch/chiptune track clocking in at under a minute. This track is radically different from the rest of the album that you are about to listen to. The predictable melodies and rhythms in this electronic track serve as a musical palette cleanser, erasing the thoughts of whatever you listened to last (in my case The Strokes - This Is It) and getting you ready for the unique chaotic sounds that your ears are about to consume.

Hella's first album starts proper with Biblical Violence. You are immediately aware that you were wrong to expect anything at all similar to the intro. This is when the noise/math rock begins. I have very little prior experience with noise or math rock so this was a new sound to my ears. The complex poly-rhythmic interactions between the drums and guitar showed that the two players had very technical skills and were eager to use them. The track is also characterized by dramatic juxtaposition of high intensity, dissonant sections, with much more soothingly melodic sections. If the first track was a palette cleanser, this was the first course introducing you to Hella's sound.

Been a Long Time Cousin begins to show some of the varied influences that Hella pulls from. The instrumental melodies on the album often consist of a melody in the upper ranges of the guitar played simultaneously with a driving rhythm in the lower ranges. In this tracks case the lower melody sounds like it straight out of a classic surf rock tune. The technical playing of the musicians and the way they combine the elements of their sounds allows for this, without the song itself sounding like a surf rock track, but rather a nod to the classic sound. This track is also interesting because at one point it "devolves" if you will into a traditional rock sound with a straight ahead beat diluted of all complexity, only to rhythmically and melodically crescendo back to the complex chaos.

Republic of Rough and Ready follows the styling of the earlier tracks. It is not a particularly stand-out track on the albums first listen, though there are a couple of interesting things happening. In the drums there is a very clever rhythmic use of closing the hi-hat slowly. This is also where I first began to notice the wild transitions between sections of the song, in this case there are some moments of strong hits on the beat for 4 or 5 beats in a row.

1-800-Ghost-Dance starts with some high flourishes on the guitar. The second section is what gets really interesting with a guitar part that sounds like it is straight out a technical study book, but played in a very melodic way.

Brown Metal starts with a driving guitar quickly accompanied by drums. The songs has some awesome use of cymbals that serve as sound more than rhythm. There is also a small interlude of what sounds like avant-garde electronic tape composition. There is a huge ritardando near the end that slowly turns the melody and rhythm into formless noise.

Cafeteria Bananas is another track that is not a stand-out track. The only real interesting part of the track is the huge amount of melodies for such a short track.

City Folk Sitting, Sitting is the longest song on the album and one of the most interesting. The track starts much more melodically focused than the rest of the album. There is some very interesting warping of time as a riff will start on an off beat multiple times in a row. The track eventually turns into what seems like free improv between the musicians.

The closing track, Better Get A Broom! unfortunately is another track that doesn't really stand out. It is very similar to some of the other tracks. I would have switched the last two for a better closing.

Overall, my first experience with noise rock was better than I expected. I found a lot to like with the album and will most likely go back to it from time to time. I would give it 4/5 overall

First album of my first chart, and what better way to start a month of shoegaze weekends then with a My Bloody Valentine album. I say album, a compilation of their pre-Loveless EP's and a single. It's certainly an interesting listen, and although it falls short of both their full lengths it shows their transition from something akin to a noise pop outfit (Isn't Anything) to "true shoegaze" I suppose you could call it (Loveless). The first disk largely contains noise rock-esque jams. These tracks feature fairly standard song structures and melodies, what sets them apart is how dissonant and aggressive they get. While these tracks aren't as heavily layered or produced as Loveless would be, they fill the maw with some surprisingly pummeling athletic basslines and simple distortion. These tracks do an excellent job of playing the sweet simple pop melodies off against the ugly, rudimentary instrumental in a way that actually puts me in mind of The Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy. Despite this, these tracks of feel resultantly messy with the musicians failing to gel particularly in the instrumental segments, sometimes not even pulling of staying in time.

As disc one progresses into disc two there's a noticeable change in the songs. They get longer and lose some of the abrasiveness. Thankfully the holes in the mix begin to fill to accommodate this. I'm particularly impressed by the latter half of this compilation as MBV somehow manage to push their songwriting into stranger territory, leaving behind standard verse chorus song structure for long interludes, 360's in mood and structure, whether that be temp, key.. and some ethereal melodic embellishments: guitars, vocals or something akin. As well as the orchestral use of distortion and general guitar noise that would define Loveless. yet somehow these tracks feel more comfy, familiar and accessible. The melodies become more concise, the harmonies get cleaner and the band gets tighter.

Overall a great listen.

Today, I listened to Aske by Burzum. I'm quite new to the genre of black metal, the only one I've heard before being filosofem and I enjoyed that except for the 25 min ambient piece.

Anyway, this 3 song ~20min EP is well known for the fact that the cover is a picture of a church that burzum burnt down and thats pretty much all I knew about it going into this EP.

Track 1 - Stemmen fra tårnet started with a long fade in and ended up being pretty boring because it was the same riff the whole way through, ending abruptly without any sort of outro or whatever. Vocals were typical of burzum though

Dominus Sathanas was basically a filler track which is quite disappointing as I don't really expect filler on a 3 track EP.

The song that redeems this EP a little bit is A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit which I found a lot more interesting. I especially liked the tempo decrease near the end, giving it a bit more substance than the other songs.

I don't usually rate things but if I had to it'll be about 4-5/10.

Listening to Pram - Helium tomorrow. Heard good things about it and dug The Stars Are So Big so p. hyped. Also theres a couple of Isn't Anything instrumentals on the second disc that I dug, just to mention that. Really weird and icy, a little ambient.

Anyways, my ears are shot from the concert, so I'm staying away from music today, which seems like an opportune moment to listen to the field recording album, Voices of North American Owls.

Self-titled has AMAZING moments, like the Dead Singer's build up, Our Queen's unexpected change, and the philosophical speech given by Marshall in the Unattractive Portable Head but it doesn't beat the concept that Hell Songs achieves with the opening declaration of

Just finished Harmony of Struggle. I've never listened to black metal much so I'm probably not the best person to review it but I thought it was alright. It had me headbanging a bit at some parts. Couldn't understand a fuckin word of the vocals but what are you gonna do it's black metal. There was a semi spoken word part in the last song that sounded vaguely racist layered over the sound of a crowd chanting and yelling. Possibly a Nazi rally? Wouldn't surprise me since I've heard Clandestine Blaze might actually be a racist. The music itself was pretty enjoyable, good riffs and shit. Dude went a little overboard on the snare drum if you space out a bit while listening to this album you'd think he was hitting the snare at the same pace throughout the entire duration of the album. It didn't sound too good either, not sure if he raised the levels of the snare specifically but it really stands out over all the other instruments in the song, a little too much at times.

6.5 overall. Decently heavy shit, would probably be a good album to listen to if you want to get into metal, it's not overwhelmingly sinister or anything like that.

Not really sure what else to talk about in a review, I don't ever review music.

Here's my 2nd chart since I wanted to do 2 albums a day

I've never heard of Hop Along but have seen the art for Get Disowned get posted on here a few times so I felt like checking it out.

Wasn't particularly impressed with this album. I'm not huge on this poppy/folky alt-rock type of sound and this album sounded the same as any other in this genre. "Quiky" lyrics that tell a story with a few completely nonsensical lines thrown about in the song. Cookie cutter vocals. The singer has a decent voice but she has that weird ass infliction in certain words that these bands fucking love to use these days. Got pretty annoying at times. Instrumentally though I enjoyed the songs. These guys definitely have a nice sound I'll give them that.

I almost stopped listening to this album after the first few songs because I just could not stand the vocals and lyrics. I kept listening and was fairly pleased with the second half of the album though. It definitely redeemed to a degree. The last few songs weren't as whiny as the first few.

I guess I could say this album was alright, I just cannot get into this type of music. Shit just sounds too, suburban, I guess. It's for art college students that get over-emotional about people they want to date but don't talk to. For people that wear Vans without socks.

I don't eat enough pizza bagels or go to movie premieres in people's lofts to enjoy this shit.

I heard it more as a jazz and soul record than a folk one, which is odd considering how it had such a massive influence on pic related (my all-time favorite album)

>> No.51101860

Not been a great week, so I'm a bit behind. Was supposed to listen to Ancient Astronauts on Wednesday but ended up with Loveless instead (also a first). At first I wasn't too keen on Loveless, I was expecting a lot of droning guitar noise backed by a solid drum beat but it had more of a pop structure to it than I'd have otherwise expected or desired. I sort of set that aside after repeated listens and it started to grow on me. I find it a bit of a chore to listen to but at the same time can't think of a legitimate reason to dislike it, in fact, I'm surprised when I realise that each subsequent track is better I believe it will be. I think it's easier to enjoy if you take the same approach to it as with ambient music and just let it seep through you gently rather than trying to live in the moment and allow all that energy to burst forth spontaneously. I think, or hope that the more I listen to it, the more I'll come to appreciate it.

Nobody wants to be here and nobody wants to leave was a little disappointing at first too, it felt a bit half hearted but the more I listen to it, the more each track stands out. For a long time I felt 'No-one wants to be here' was kind of meh but after giving it a really good few plays several months after my initial listen, it jumped up straight into my top 20 (it's only on there as an example more than anything and also because that's the day I fell in love with it.)

Gonna try and fit Swans in tonight. Kind of nervous since it's a two hour epic over six sides.

After listening: great album. Definitely wanna listen to more. Most hip hop I've listened to is more contemporary so I don't have too much context to go on while listening, but after this I'm looking forward to more. I loved the jazz-rap vibe. Really liked the lyrics as well.
4/5, great first impression, will listen to more

Nice choice with the prog. Foxtrot is probably my favourite Genesis album, since it's more refined than Nursery Cryme but still draws upon the fantastical ideas that they previously explored in their earlier works. In particular 'Watcher of the skies' is probably one of my favourite opening tracks on any album for the blaring mellotron that drives the first minute of the track until the bass kicks in.

Fragile is a solid album as well though personally I always thought Close to the Edge was the best Yes album, if only for that bass riff that kicks off about five/six minutes (still a good album away). I still haven't got around to listening to ELP's first album but if you like it (and assuming you haven't already heard it) then consider listening to Tarkus next?

I hope you've got these albums on vinyl though? Definitely the optimal way to experience any prog album recorded during the early seventies, you know, since they were all recorded on analogue tape.
