I actually find it helps to feed "inspiration on demand" by giving you a wider base of ideas to work off of.

I've been suffering writer's block for the past six months - I've come up with four good riffs, which isn't nearly enough when you're supposed to be writing catchy tech death - started just recording random noodling sessions, and hashing out chord progressions, and suddenly I'm at half of an album.
