"I think rock can definitely come back. There's a situation right now akin to that in 1991 just before Nirvana broke where you have a lot of underground indie bands and a mainstream scene saturated with bad pop and novelty acts. We've been here before. The mainstream music in 89-91 was awful and didn't connect with what the kids were feeling at all. It happened then and it can happen again."

The Nirvana thing will never happen again, the internet has made it unnecessary. Thanks to the internet everyone can listen to whatever kind of music they want. People are no longer stuck in the mainstream without any clue of whats going on in the underground, if the music on mainstream radio is not doing it for them then all they have to do is go on the net and find a genre that resonates with them.

Regardless why would you want the grunge/alt rock thing to happen again? it's well documented that most of the people who got into the Seattle bands through MTV were insufferable posers, that cared more about Kurt's hair than his lyrics.

Eh, I disagree. It's a song-to-song thing with Kurt. He's a lot like Ginsberg (and I hate myself for equating the two as writers) in that everything he wrote was so weird and personal that you need to know a lot about Kurt's personal life to really get a handle on what he was writing about a lot of the time. Only Kurt had a gift for making it seem like these weird, deeply personal songs were written for you.

Look at a band like Led Zeppelin though. Each member was/is a MASTER at their instrument. I'm not saying they were "the best hands down" but undeniably technically proficient paired with good songwriting. I don't think bands NEED to explore electronics in order to think of new ways to play their instruments/write their songs. I'm in no way someone who has this concept of "real music" but there is just simply a lack of artists who have undeniable technical ability paired with artistic vision and his been since the end of Led Zeppelin. Sure.

Most guitarists are good at either rhythm or solos, but not both. Tony Iommi, the riff god, had very simplistic, limited solo-ing while EVH produced physics-defying solos, but his rhythm guitar was mediocre.

I'm not the guy your arguing with. But if you played guitar and studied guitar theory then you would probably realize that most of those players aren't as brilliant people think.

so you're saying that it isn't a joke, after all? if it isn't "omg rape such deep", if it is, it's stupid. as we have already discussed. but you already know this. i just like to take my bait with some ketchup on the side.

Definitely look up those i reced, especially midori.
If you want a japanese band that is kind of like nirvana (keeping it relevant to the thread) but actually good, you could check out Number Girl.

Japan has a really healthy psych rock scene aswell, i'd rec you check out the japshare blogspot, dude's got great taste and a lot of crazy and interesting bands.

For more recs i'd kind of need to know what you want a bit more specifically, and it's kind of difficult for me now as i'm not on my computer and have to try to remember good ones at the top of my head, which is even harder because most of them are in japanese.

Pete Townshend pretty much invented power chords. I agree that JP is not that great. Just listen to his solo work with the Joe Perry Project. Eddie Van Halen as I explained defined 80s guitar, so he deserves more credit than that.

Yea Bonzo isn't on the level of some crazy ass jazz drummer but he's still incredible and inspired probably every drummer after him to take up the drums. Bonzo made a lot of noise for using such a small kit and 1 bass pedal. And sometimes his bare fucking hands (Led Zeppelin DVD version of Moby Dick drum solo).

Idk how you can say JPJ was an average bassist..

Doesn't have to be a jazz drummer, there are plenty of drummers that are just better than him in terms of both technique and chops.
Bonham was just an average player with a good groove, heavy dynamics and some nice triplet fills. But seriously it doesn't matter, I think the drums on those Zep records sound great, but I also know that Bonham wasn't the drumming god people make him out to be.
