You know the album wasn't literally about her dying right? It's about the relationship dying

I was depressed in my freshman year of college and would sit in my room in the dark all day and listen to this album and skip class. I cried too ofc

benji hits close home, especially kozelek's attitude towards sadness and day-to-day life (which is a really underrated aspect of that album)

>"It’s about an experience I had in a very emotionally abusive relationship and the pulling myself out of that, and the effect that it had on my life at the time."

>"A hospice can be representative of what emotional and psychological abuse can do. Let’s say as a hospice worker, you’re taking a lot of verbal abuse from someone who is dying, cause they’re, absolutely and rightfully so, bitter about what’s happening and feeling like it’s completely unfair, which it most obviously is. And you’re in the position of feeling like you have no right to complain about your situation because it’s so much worse for them. So you think the least I can do is give them a punching bag."

Yeah. The album's story is a metaphor for his own experience in an abusive relationship. I'd just gotten out of one when I started listening to it, and I'd never felt so in sync with an album. Every lyric captured the feeling perfectly.

It was a definite part of the healing process. That closing bit of "Wake" still stays with me.

I can't stand Sun Kil Moon, but I listened to Benji anyway. I couldn't stand it, except for the track "Jim Wise". That one hits hard.
