It's funny how predictable plebs are, they always have Late Registration or Graduation as their favorite Kanye albums. His most watered down, commercial muzak to date. Even Ye himself disowns that period.

I haven't listened to those albums but this will never be a valid argument for a portion of someone's discography being worthless; half the time the artist doesn't know shit

Late Registration and College Dropouts are very obviously rap albums while some of his more popular recent releases with the exception of Yeezus are more reminiscent of pop music (808's and to a lesser extent My Beautiful). With Yeezus being influenced by more underground music like industrial.

The original point was to imply OP liked watered down pop rap with kanye production instead of decent rap albums with kanye production.

You kidding? Late Registration is incredibly Pop as well as Graduation; so are MBDTF and Yeezus but at least these have a lot more experimentation and artistic ambition rather than commercial. 808's is indeed a Pop album, but also his most personal to date.

I actually forgot Graduation was an album so I guess I would agree with OP that its not great. However kanye uses mainly soul samples on LR and people on the album tend to sing in a soul style (including pop artists) so I don't understand how its a 'pop' album in the same way as 808's or MB.

Are you retarded? Graduation I understand as it went full blown main-stream as he could get it, but with LR, he perfected the topics he talked about and lyrical content, but made his instrumentals more musical by adding the orchestra and having Jon Brion help produce the album.

Lyrically, he's become more commercial/watered down as of recently because he knows that that's what sells, but also because he can rely on just getting great sounding beats and people will still back the production on it as the only way to defend whether the song is good or not.

This is coming from a Kanye fan too.

No it's not retarded, having corny production help from Jon Brion does not equal less watered-down. It's he's most watered down because it's his most impersonal, even moreso than Graduation, it's really just catering to the masses.

>corny production

No. The production on LR exceeds TCD by so much that TCD doesn't only sound basic, but really is in comparison.

Calling it impersonal is the stupidest claim that can be made about it. What is "Heard 'Em Say", "Touch The Sky", "Roses", "Bring Me Down", "Hey Mama", either of "Diamonds Of Sierra Leone" tracks, and "Gone"?

Your last statement doesn't make sense because you won't even elaborate on what "action" his music is taking.

Regardless, his discography as a whole is great because you get to see his growth and how his styles change from each album and provide a snapshot for where he was at in his life at that time.

>Old fart me, I just biked over to Virgin at 10:15 August 29--Late Registration was on the sound system, isn't that illegal?--and bought a copy with a knot of collegiate-looking African Americans at the stroke of 11:58. Since then I've immersed--the realistic way, with breaks to let my mind and ears adjust. But I still couldn't tell you whether it's better or worse than The College Dropout, and neither could West. He's too close to have any perspective, he wouldn't tell the truth if he did, and his judgment is so skewed he's crazy about The Documentary and that Common joint he produced.

>Statistically, chances are it's worse. Few albums meet the measure of The College Dropout, a winsome thing that performed the rare feat of deepening with overexposure--the samples, the jokes, the skits, all that shallow stuff. While Late Registration may harbor something as brilliant as "All Falls Down," "Slow Jamz," or "We Don't Care"--the wickedest opener since Eminem's "My Name Is," flipping pop morality the bird in a laff riot of racial solidarity and sociological fact--it can't harbor anything as startling, because The College Dropout set the surprise bar too high. Nor can it harbor anything as funny, because if it did we'd already know--like Eminem, West has cut down on the comedy now that he's taken seriously, and let's hope he gets over it. Nevertheless, no reviewer's deadline is long enough to plumb this music.

Yet he gave it a better score than The College Dropout.
Christgau is a fucking hack.

>>50760278
True, he gave Money Store and NLDW both A- and his review for Yeezus was simply "Sign spotted on church in the wild: Death Grips--Be Like Them". He liked Hold My Liquor though which is surprising.
