Mostly, I'd just use it as a gauge of someone's tastes, and it could be used to find people with tastes similar to yours.
Sometimes, you obviously get people who just wear band shirts for social credibility. I.E., anyone who wears a band shirt but hasn't listened to a full album of theirs. And sometimes, band shirts can be super embarrassing to see (like Nirvana shirts done in the style of the Starbucks logo because lolSeattle).
But, for example, if I saw someone with a The Glow Pt. 2 shirt, I'd assume they'd've listened to the album because it carries very little social stigma.
