it's that time again

what are you listening to, /jazz/ ?
who did you recently discovered ?

discuss your favorite artists and albums in this thread !

this one is a rare occasion to hear Monk with a rather large ensemble, I don't know why he didn't record more with that setup but it's quite recommended

Sure most jazz groups didn't get that big more because of practicality. That's part of the reason Duke Ellington's orchestra fell out of fashion as cheaper to hire, smaller bebop groups were popping up.

Earth Wind and Fire are bloody fantstic and like all the best funk bands they take jazz influence.
Also, /jazz/ has a thing about insisting that Snarky Puppy isn't jazz either.

Was Monk particularly wealthy? Like he certainly put out a lot of albums and his name is well known so I'd imagine he'd have the money just to do whatever he wanted.

because you record a lot doesn't mean that you're wealthy, especially when you're a black jazzman

It means he could afford studio time, session musicians, touring and labels were supporting his output. Surely there must have been a decent amount of money flowing in or he simply wouldn't have been able to keep putting albums out.

>friend gives me Rolling Stone jazz guide
>hmm
>everything bebop has 5 stars
>everything fusion gets 3 at best, unless Miles did it in which case it gets 5
>west coast barely pushes 2 stars
>everything Miles and Coltrane did worshipped regardless of whether it was good purely because they did it
>Decoy and Interstellar Space get 4 stars each
Why did I even bother, seriously

Does anybody else find A Love Supreme to be overrated? It's a good album, there are some pretty amazing parts of it, but some of it just feels a bit... mediocre. I don't know, I feel like Coltrane has much better records than this one (My Favorite Things, Live At Birdland, even Crescent). I do love how this thing ends like it begins and sort of feels like one work, but I feel like he has other stuff that exceeds this

I am looking for songs like:

I think anything that is acknowledged as the best of anything is usually overated but A Love Supreme is superb.
The way the soloists are constantly referencing the structure and themes throughout the whole album even of previous songs is kinda genius.
People always tout Freak out as revolutionary as a concept album but I think A Love Supreme does a far more cohesive job of linking Coltrane's spiritual themes though much more subtle and more successful ways than Sgt Pepper or Freak Out.
Also, who doesn't love that drum solo.

I don't think a label will pay you more if you make money for them unless you get a #1 hit, which Monk never had
imo he was just an average seller (Monk's dream is his most sold album and still didn't chart anything) that people didn't listen to because too far out from the usual jazz music of the times

>>50383939
I kinda agree, it's a great album but it's way too much talked about as the definitive Coltrane album, while some other great stuff by him is often left behind

>> No.50384161

>>50383557
That sucks, because jazz or not, snarky puppy is really good at what they do. And it's stupid to invalidate a whole genre because of straight eighth notes

>> No.50384163

>>50384051
This is basically the biggest thing I loved about it. Halfway through when you start hearing the themes echoed in the other players, it's just genius.

But as a whole I feel like he has stronger albums

By the way, has anyone ever just made it so that the album keeps looping or something? Like at the end just copy and paste everything after the bass solo so it's just like the beginning

>> No.50384235

>>50384090
Still. He was selling enough to justify producing a monstrously large number of albums.
Also, if you like Olé a lot, I'd reccomend checking out some of Magma's jazzier stuff. Christian Vander adored Coltrane and you can hear how albums like Olé has a huge influence on his music.
>>50384161
People here aren't really dismissing them but they'd be better received in a prog thread.
>>50384163
>By the way, has anyone ever just made it so that the album keeps looping or something?
ha that sounds like fun but I don't think I'd ever listen to ALS twice in a row. Any time I listen to that I kinda need to take a minute just to have this kind of "that just happened" moment.
Mind, I actually do prefer My Favourite Things. Never has a song had such an ability to worm it's way into my head and I guarantee; it's not because I'm a big fan of the Sound of Music.

There were deffinatly parts that I liked. I liked the title track and Q&A but didn't really like tracks like Four Winds and interception.
I do like free playing but I don't really like tracks like those two because it's like the rest of the band is laying down a structure but it doesn't feel like the soloist is really paying much attention to it.
I'd rather listen to something just completely ostensibly and unquestionably mad like Q&A than be on the edge but I suppose more than anything, I'd like tracks like Four Winds but a bit more reigned in.

Mary Lou Williams has really impressed me lately. Ellington is the only other early jazz pianist/arranger I can think of who adapted so well to modern jazz's approach.
