Most Rap's just a beat and a boast, but Run and D.M.C., a pair of New York rappers, let the beat run wild and turn the boasts into messages that self-improvement is the only ticket out. Trading off lines or even the words within a line, they get into a vocal tug of war that's completely different from the straightforward delivery of the Furious Five's Melle Mel or the every-body-takes-a-verse approach of groups like Sequence. And the music, by Orange Krush, that backs these tracks is surprisingly varied, for all its bare bones. In their adventurous "Rock Box," Run and D.M.C. set their clipped, back-and-forth exchanges to a crying hard-rock guitar solo, melting RAP into rock like it's never been done before. And the dramatic, dark sound of "It's like That," with an organ pouncing in at the beginning of the lines, sets up the scolding rap: "You should have gone to school/You could have learned a trade/But you laid in the bed with the bunk half-made/Now all the time you're crying that you're underpaid/It's like that."

Rap is like any other genre, there is some good, and there is a LOT of bad. Hilltop Hoods or Murph are example of some decent rap, but a lot of it is just noise.

>> No.50042988

>what is your reason for hating rap music?
The majority of it is uninspired and predicable. It's as if the genre as a whole ran out of ideas sometime in 2003.

I don't hate it as much as I used to (I'm currently listening to shabazz palaces rn) but its VERY formulaic. For instance, literally every hip hop song - and i mean literally in the actual sense - revolves around the rapper discussing how great he is, whether its bitches, money, drugs, guns, flow, clout, etc.
Hip hop also largely abandons melody and harmony
You don't necessarily have to be a good musician or technically talented to rap (obviously there are exceptions)
People like rap for the production, yet rappers, who get the credit, don't produce their own beats
There is also NO hip hop that isnt sample based - it can get kind of frustrating
Also, the use of nigga is pretty alienating to white audiences

Its not an inherently worse genre, but there are a lot of fair reasons to dislike hip hop

Run-D.M.C. [April 24, 1984]
Though a bit upwardly mobile for the highbrow-lowbrows who regard money lust and the death throes of capitalism as two sides of RAP's only fit subject--D.J. Run boasted about attending St. John's, of all things--the competitive fatalism of the spare, brutal "It's Like That"/"Sucker M.C.'s" was unforced and dead on, and Eddie Martinez's Hendrix-Funkadelic metal on the expansive "Rock Box" proves that even street minimalists can love guitars. But this does more than fill in around two of the finest singles of the past couple of years. It's easily the canniest and most formally sustained RAP album ever, a tour de force I trust will be studied by all manner of creative downtowners and racially enlightened Englishmen. While their heavy staccato and proud disdain for melody may prove too avant-garde for some, the style has been in the New York air long enough that you may understand it better than you think. Do you have zero tolerance for namby-pamby bullshit? Do you believe in yourself above all? Then chances are you share Run-D.M.C.'s values.

Radio [Def Jam, 1985]
Rick Rubin's thwonging minimalism and Cool J's proud polysyllables are fresh, def, and so forth. From the daring little piano hook of "I Can Give You More" to Russell Simmons's motormouth prevarications on "That's a Lie" to the humble love-man details of "I Want You," this is the most engaging and original RAP album of the year. But the post-Run-D.M.C. school does betray a penchant for what you might call bourgeois individualism. Laying off messages is one thing, but the Hollis crew rarely projects much community or solidarity either. Which sometimes leaves a solo artist alone with his DJ and his fine self. B+

It just seems that its all the same formula. Its just bitches, money, ho's, guns, niggas, pussy, sexism, and racism. And aggressiveness. While I enjoy joking about most of these things, hearing the same shitty formula of stuff I don't want to hear in my music gets old. Its just angry verses trying to hit home by making a clever remark at this point. Maybe older rap had more purpose, but we don't hear the old stuff no more.

Death grips does use lots of samples (less than normal, but still alot)
Also in my post I forgot to mention the horrible and casual misogyny present to some extent in essentially all rap music

well even if they use them is it still sample based? I heard some of their songs that use samples but the music is still absolutely not sample based. the samples were just used as accents. they're writing their own music. not just sampling someone then looping it. at least what I heard.

People that don't listen to hip hop are the ones that complain about "hurr it's only about money and hoes hurr durr" The ignorant stuff is fun to listen to every once in awhile

Sampling is great because good producers can flip a sample and make something and I've been turned on to a lot of musicians because I looked up the sample and it has helped a new generation find artists from back in the day

rap music is generally bad because it puts all emphasis on lyrics and the lyrics of rap music are overall even worse than the lyrics of rock music so rap music is emphasizing really, really terrible stuff
and because of the emphasis on rhythmic delivery of bad poetry, the backing music tends to be just big beats played so repetitively that even philip glass would be enraged to hear it

overall, and there are some exceptions of course (not enough exceptions), rap music has very little musically going for it, and it doesn't even have much literary value either (which is apparently the real goal)

The entire genre of rap is a meme, all rap is memerap, as it's objectively inferior/cheaper music. It's our degenerate plebeian /mu/ that has tried to make us believe rap is an "essential" genre and that if you don't like it you must be "narrow-minded", a "redditor" who is "born in le wrong generation" and there's probably some racial element to it too. Rap music has no staying power. All of rap is just a neo-rockist sub-genre of top-40 pop, with a "urban" paint job. This music doesn't stand the test of time, it's a fad. That's why rappers are discussed about like fashion. Image/fashion/numbers sold are actually considered when talking about them. Rap is just a really cheap/lazy form of music anyways. The majority of rap beats are just stealing (MUHH "SAMPLING") another artist's music, looping it over a generic drumbeat while someone "raps" over it. The "technical aspects" of rapping are not hard at all. That's why there's 14 year old white girls on YouTube uploading themselves flowing with ease and speed, dropping multis like it's nothing. But because they don't fit the image of a "rapper", no one would take seriously. I've listened to it all from backpacker shit like cLOUDDEAD and Atmosphere to the "golden days" of Public Enemy and Eric B. and Rakim to instrumental stuff like J Dilla and DJ Shadow to the 90s with Nas and Mobb Deep to the CLT approved A Tribe Called Quest and Digital Planets to today like Kendrick and Kanye. All rap is meme rap. All of it. Stop spamming it. Either keep it contained into one threads or request a containment board. I'm sick of coming on /mu/ and seeing a million Kanye threads (none of which are about music btw).

There he is. There he goes again
Look everyone he posted it once again. Isn't he just the funniest guy around. Oh my god.
I can almost see your pathetic overweight frame glowing in the dark lit by your computer screen which is the only source of light in your room giggling like a little girl as you once again type your little costanza thread up and fill in the captcha. Or maybe you don't even fill in the captcha, maybe you're such a disgusting NEET that you actually paid for a 4chan pass so you just choose the picture. Oh we all know the picture, George Costanza giving a condescending look, isn't it? Or maybe it's an oh-so-funny deviation on it. I imagine you, little shit, laughing so hard as you click it that you drop your Doritos onto the floor. But its ok, your mother will clean it up in the morning. Oh that's right, did I fail to mention? You live with your mother! You're a fat fucking fuck up and she's probably so sick of you already. So sick of having to do everything for you all god damn day, every day, for a grown man who spends all his time on 4chan posting about a reddit meme. Just imagine this, she had you and then she thought you were going to be a scientist or an astronaut or something grand and then you became a NEET. A pathetic euphoria fag NEET. She probably cries herself to sleep everyday thinking about how bad it is and how she wishes she could just disappear. She can't even try to talk to you because all you say is "M'LADY M'LADY M'LADY".
You became a parody of your own self. And that's all you are. A sad little man laughing in the dark by himself as he prepares to indulge in the same old dance that he's done a million times now.
And that's all you'll ever be.

Cuz faggits dwell in the past and cant get with the times.

Every music is somewhat about bitches, money problems, life is great, life is shit, and etc.

Just as every musician/artist differ in the ways they express their stories with such elements, rappers also have different takes on those topics.

Your argument fails if you say they talk about same stuff.
They have different upbringings, some sold drugs, some went to private school. Its their stories that makes rap interesting.
Its also their lyrical rhythmical musical style.

Sure rap sounds like shit if all youve heard was fakeass mcs blasting 808s with a generic ass routine. But so arealmost all rock bands with shit rhythm guitars and uninspired drums.
I especially hate those fuckers with

i dont get why people say rap isnt real music because it's all about bragging, or all about bitches and drugs, or just talking over beats, etc. who cares, as long as people enjoy it, which a fuckin lot of people do
