Yeah, that's a Hampus thing to do. I get the impression that some people just listen superficially to a broad range of music just to boost the artist count on their last.fm and have as many different writing systems as possible in their last 7 days.

That's fine if you just want to try a few things and get the general idea, but you don't really get a lot out of it. It all just blurs together. If you really want to try something new and difficult, it requires repeated, attentive listening and reading.

This isn't really one "genre" as such, as there are a lot of different approaches that aren't really similar in either aesthetic or technique. The main players are Grisey and Murail. >> No.50026592

>>50026431
There's the Hampus tard chart but it's completely worthless.

Lowercase is mostly the quieter end of either glitch or EAI. Onkyo isn't far off.

Stochastic refers to the use of randomness in composition, but doesn't imply any specific technique. It's used in different ways and under different names by different composers. Try Xenakis.

New complexity is sort of post-Babbitt and usually means stuff like Elliott Carter. It's the opposite of spectralism in the sense that it prioritizes form over timbre.

EAI is free improvisation. Listen to AMM.

Onkyo is japanese minimalist free improvisation. Listen to Otomo Yoshihide (but he has a huge range in his work).

The thing is, contemporary music is really fragmented and these terms are either overly specific or overly vague to the point that they're nearly useless.

Why people hate Kanye West:

1) He is not just confident, he thinks he is god's gift to the world. He compares himself to Shakespeare, Mozart and considers himself infinitely better than any other of his peers. He calls himself a genius. He is the definition of a narcissistic egomaniac.

2) He is extremely childish and can't face criticism. See those two radio interviews where he lost his shit and started acting like an autistic child.

3) He is a huge hypocrite. He will diss corporates like Nike and then do Adidas commercials. He wants to be keeping it real, then he does shit like sell $120 white t-shirts.

4) The VMA things was shitty because it shows he is an autistic man child who thinks his opinion is more important than anything else.

5) He is extremely shallow. He married a reality tv star and his life is a celebrity sideshow. He represents the absolute worst of celebrity culture.

6) Publications have declared him a genius and give all his albums extremely high scores despite the fact that he is atrocious lyrically. He can barely speak, and people get annoyed with hearing how genius he is for nonsensical rants.

7) He thinks AIDs is a government conspiracy.

8) He makes a living off of sampling other people's music.

9) He is homophobic, stating he's not sure if gay people should be married.

10) He is sexist, see his liberal use of the word bitch, his treatment of women in his lyrics or the Monster video which had dead white naked models as a backdrop.

11) He trivializes real racism by saying shit like celebrities are treated like blacks in the 1960s.

12) He thinks reading books is stupid, yet he co-wrote a very bad book full of really lame inspirational quotes.

13) He spawned a lot of unfunny memes.

Ah ok so what I really meant by that was that when I see people saying that certain albums are garbage and unlistenable and that people are listening to them just to seem intelligent or as a 'special snowflake' It makes them seem exactly what they claim to not be. By shunning albums they cannot get into they try to act more intelligent.

It's ok to not like a piece of music and It's ok to like very strange esoteric music. When you decide the value of that music for someone else and claim that they only like it because they want to improve their image you're doing the same thing yourself by claiming to not like it.

I can see where people are coming from though. Genuine curiosity in strange music can easily be taken as someone just trying to act intellectual.
