Whatever happened to the real indie rock sound?
I don't mean what passes as indie rock today: be it the sweet dulcet melodies of Grizzly Bear or modern Wilco which both could be put next to the works of the Beatles or the Beach Boys in terms of genre. Or the dream pop of Beach House or Animal Collective. Or the New-New Wave of Vampire Weekend, or Ariel Pink, Twin Shadow or M83. Certainly not The National whose albums would sit perfectly aside Nebraska, or The Arcade Fire after Funeral, as they began implementing more and more classical instruments and higher quality production.
No what I'm talking about is the rock that personified hipsters in the late 90s and early 2000s. Wolf Parade, Tapes N' Tapes, Islands, The Unicorns, The Fiery Furnaces, Modest Mouse, Califone, Les Savy Fav, Okkervil River, The Hold Steady,
Bands whose sound didn't necesarilly lack the melodical nature of say later Arcade Fire, but whose means of representing it was completely different. Instead of overproduced wall of sound techniques, rougher, more stripped down recordings, with less instruments, and more focus on noise and effects both as a theme and worked into recordings.
Lately what has there been that could be put besides those bands? Wavves? Titus Andronicus? I'm really struggling to name any others
