Everything else is mediocre or worse.

they were influential, but like a lot of bands/musicians that were influential and revolutionary in their time, it doesn't hold up that well these days

I like them a lot. A lot of /mu/ tends to shit on them without actually saying anything other than "dadrock," but they're top five for me, personally.

The fans aren't what make DSOTM mediocre. The fans just make it more annoying than all the other mediocre rock albums I've listened to and forgotten about.

I'll grant you that the production is super polished (if you go in for that clean slick sound, which some people do), but that's what happens when you throw money and studio engineers at any album. And I'll grant that some of the tracks have pretty good harmonies. Not Lennon/McCartney or Steely Dan tier, but noticeably better than your typical rock band. The problem is that they couldn't write vocal melodies to save themselves, possibly because of Waters's text-centric songwriting outlook, so you these promising song-skeletons end up saddled with a musically listless vocal line that often just repeats the same rhythmically monotonous phrase while hanging around on chord tones. This wouldn't be crippling except that most of the album consists of what are essentially pop songs. I like pop, but not when it's written so poorly. Pink Floyd only redeem themselves on DSOTM when they shut up and play their instruments.

And even then, the Flaming Lips' cover was still a better album.

A band that got me through a lot of tough times when I was younger. I don't listen to them as much as I used to but I still throw on Animals pretty often. They hold a special place in my heart and I will defend them to the death.

One of my favorite bands of all time, listening to them right now actually. Echoes is one of their best songs, you should go watch the whole live in Pompeii concert, fucking awesome. I like their earlier albums best

Meddle could have been one of the best albums in their discography had they not ruined it with long, boring, and plodding songs to open and close the thing

Personally, I enjoy their music. Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon, Echoes, Animals, and Atom Heart Mother are all great albums. If you like those, then I also recommend The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Honestly, it's good music if you're in a contemplative mood. Any other mood and I just don't have the patience to listen to a 78 minute song of ambient noise.

Also Pink Floyd is great. Meddle's 10/10 I dunno why everyone thinks it's just filler with the exception of Echoes and One of These Days; Fearless, Pillow of Winds and San Tropez are all amazing.

I've been listening to The Final Cut recently and I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's like Animals if David Gilmour had no part in it.

No there was a transitionary period in which they functioned as a band without one specific leader. Waters wasn't in charge until the Wall. If anything Richard Wright was the mastermind behind Dark Side.
