while not spot on, these two guys are the closest to correct in this thread. I've listened to a ton of Kanye, I enjoy all of his albums, and I even like him as a person. I'm a big fan, to say the least, and 808s is my favorite work from him and a personal 10/10.

It's a personal statement, it goes deeper into Kanye as a human than any of his other albums, and his singing honestly does it for me. It may not have the hip-hop production and rapping most Kanye fans love him for, but it offers Kanye in a way his other albums haven't been able to do.

and to rank them like everyone else:
808s (10/10) > Yeezus (9.5/10) > MBDTF (9/10) > College Dropout (8.5/10) > Late Registration (8.0/10) > Graduation (7.5/10)

what you guys prefer is subjective obviously, but if you're a big fan of Kanye for more than his hip-hop production and rapping skills, 808s deserves another listen

I can agree with that. You gotta look past the lack of rapping (along with the different type of production) to really enjoy it. That'd be a lot harder if you primarily love the rapping.

>>47804976
I think that's partly where I can see the difference in opinions, I enjoy every track on 808s but there are a few on MBDTF that I don't really enjoy. I've listened to Yeezus more than any other Kanye and I honestly still don't know exactly what to think of it lyrically. He throws so much emotion into it. All of these angry rants and narcissistic ramblings mixed in with songs about relationships and sex. He takes all of his drawn out explanations for his emotions and logic and puts them in this one 40-minute, super concise and packed album.

I'm not a big production guy, but this album just sounds amazing. He takes his usual genre mixing to new places and the sounds just drill into your head and dump all of his crazy lyrics into your brain. It's not simple and it's all over the place, but it's definitely brought down to a barebones type of production.

It's honestly just a subjective sort of thing, but I love it. It's Kanye. His thoughts aren't as plain and simple as on 808s for you to relate to, but it's all there (in a crazy, messed up way) if you want to dig into it.

>> No.47810885

808s is more of a straight forward album in every aspect, pretty stripped down instrumentaly and with a direct message. I admire kanye for having the guts to put out an album like this one right after Graduation, which i think is his most accessible work, 808s is way more personal than what you would expect from a rapper in the peak of his success, and is beautiful.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is still my favorite Kanye album though, a 10/10 for me from beginning to end, production wise it has everything he had done up to that point but on a higher level, with some of the best instrumentals i ever heard in the genre (Devil in a New Dress is my favorite) and i enjoy the revenge feel of the lyrics, the only bad thing i have to say about this album is the presence of some unnecessary features (Rick Ross on Monster and Swiss Beats on So Appalled), but i have the same complaint about everyone of his albums.

I like his first three albums, especially Late Registration because it is the most eclectic of them, and i love the orchestration behind it, it adds to the quality of the record without make you tired of hearing it. He was less egotistic in the first three albums, and today it's interesting to see him in the "underdog" point of view.

>> No.47811103

>>47810885
Great points man, I agree with just about everything you said. and Devil in a New Dress has my favorite production too. I played MBDTF so much when it came out and it still has that beauty to it. I can't play it on repeat for a full day like I could back then but it's still wonderful to hear.

And I agree with your view of the first three, College Dropout used to be my favorite album from him because of that soulful, new fresh feeling he had going on but with his development it's hard to deny that his newer albums pulled off his visions better than his older ones (he didn't need skits, for one). LR had a few tracks I didn't dig too much, and Graduation was lacking a little something that I still can't put my finger on (and it's not as cohesive, banging singles but not really a great album as a whole).

In any case, he's in my top three favorite artists of all time and I can't wait until his next album comes out.

I'm a lyrics kinda guy, so for me it's:
CD=MBDTF (9.5)
LR (8)
Graduation (7.5)
808s (7)
Yeezus (4)

CD just had an amazing honesty about it, he had a hugely contradictory style, but unlike on Yeezus, he openly acknowledged it. Also his only album without a bad feature imo. Only negative is the skits (but School Spirit skits are hilarious)

LR had some incredible songs like Late and Gone, yet some absolute shit like Celebration.

Graduation was similar, but with less great and more bad (Drunk and Hot Girls, Barry Bonds, Good Life). Yet it has my all time favorite Kanye song in Everything I Am.

808s had a really interesting feel, I just couldn't get behind some of the autotune and lyrics.

MBDTF is great, amazing production and some of his most on point rhymes ever. Too bad half the features sucked (that includes Nicki imo)

To be blunt, I fucking hated Yeezus. I get if you liked it, and I appreciated what he's doing for the game, I just couldn't get behind the lyrics, the fake rebellious attitude, and I just felt like everything he did there, from the cover art to how he was talking about giving a chick molly over a sample of such an influential song about racism, was disguising being lazy as being 2deep4u. Anyway that's just how I feel.
