Only the opening song on their last album is any good though, and it's the only remotely DSBM-influenced track on it. A City in Mono is pretty chill album.

They did a pure DSBM album for their first effort but I remember it being kind of lame because it's DSBM.

they are definitely on a different level than typical metalcore, especially the album you posted. they take the spastic flurry of notes style far enough that it almost begins to resemble something artful. genres are for faggots but everything about their approach is that of the more extreme side of punk/hardcore. the only thing that makes people think of them as metal is the technicality.

their recent album is more easy to get into, as they smoothened their sound a bit, added more melody and a consistent theme, its still pretty unique tho

I saw them in 1999 in Calgary and it was half stuff from Times of Grace and the rest was a mix of Through Silver in Blood and Enemy of the Sun. Probably the best live show I've ever seen.

Saw them again in 2006 and it was a more even mix of songs, nothing from the punk albums nor Souls at Zero though. Also really good, totally different feel. The '99 show was this random mix of people who would never be at the same show together, from across the punk, HC and metal scenes. The crowd in '06 was half hipsters because it was Portland. Which is fine, just the energy was a lot different.

oh, I found tons of old vids in the past. Even going back to when they were still playing punk squats in Europe and just starting to do songs from Souls at Zero, though the record wasn't out. They even presented themselves differently then, like they spoke about the meanings of the songs the way a hardcore band does.

They stopped speaking at all when they went fully experimental. They take the stage, play for two solid hours and leave. There is no gaps at all because the visuals, soundscapes and voice samples continue even when the music pauses. They don't even introduce themselves at the start or say "thank you, good night" later.

Shit man I haven't heard any new stuff of theirs in about 6 years now that I think about it. I should look it up.

Given to the Rising, I couldn't remember the name actually, is probably the last I heard. I will look up Honor Found in Decay.

As for what happened, they were all about 16 when they formed the band. That album was made maybe two years later (I'm estimating). They saw punk as this creative, challenging thing at the time and they just wanted to keep challenging themselves so they explored a new sound with every album. Pain of Mind is actually considered an 80's classic in those circles to this day. The Word as Law is more polished, more contemplative, and with no fast songs but it's not "Neurosis" yet. Its funny but they come from the same local music scene as Green Day, Op IV (who evolved into Rancid), and Jawbreaker. You should read the old thank you lists on their albums, they are priceless.

>Whoracle
I don't remember anything from it but The Jester Race is awesome.

>Burning Bridges
Not my cup of tea.

>Slaighter Of The Soul
Victim of its own success. It's the sound many bands tried, and still try to emulate. As result, it ends up sounding as stale as everything that came after it, despite its riffs being above average, although rather simplistic. Not really saying it's bad because it's popular, but because after listening to so many things that sound like it you end up ruining the whole experience, but that's just me. I prefer The Red In The Sky Is Ours myself.

Normally charts are divided by genre anyway. It just seems more concise to keep them together but at least clarify what genre they are. And knowing what particular order was just a question of bias.

Sorry for the late response. To be honest I haven't really listened to any of the newer In Flames. I recall listening some songs from their post 2000 material on youtube and I enjoyed them, but not enough to convince me to try the full albums.

I happen to enjoy Projector and dislike Fiction. Did you like Construct? It's not the best they have done but they really captured a certain mood that does it for me, but I can't really put it into words.

I really want to like it, but that's the best thing I can say about Construct, and probably only because I'm a long-time fan with a pro-DT bias. It's not horrible.

I don't follow metal regularly anymore, I just get the urge sometimes and inevitably end up here looking for new things. I see things like this and I am baffled. These guys have been around since 1989 and two of them were in Profanatica before that. The members are older than the parents of some people reading this post right now and they are still making death metal.

I mean you have admire this.

Drudkh and Falls of Rauros are your best bets at this point.

Les Discrets is great, albeit not really "metal," and Fen is pretty inconsistent throughout their discography.

As for Mutiilation... Well... I can't recommend much from them, but they're a pretty different breed altogether when compared to the others. Still love everything I've heard of theirs, though.

It has moments where it seems to be trying really hard to be something it's not. On my first listen I hated album. I hated the grating guitar tone, the lack of any real pacing or flow, and the fact that the electronic fills to bridge the tracks always seemed unnecessary and didn't really add anything. That and it it seemed to actually ditch some of the things AoP used to do best in favour of things that just didn't work.
It grew on me a lot though, and I love it's ambition and how it executes its ideas.
>I WATCHED MY SON
>DIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE
It still has it's flaws, and I'll always prefer Mammal or White Tomb over it. Mammal especially was a lot more bleak than this and didn't need to try and be progressive.

Considering he always knew it was his last album and went all out with an attitude that even if everyone hated it he had nothing to really lose, I'd say it turned out to be really interesting.
