He's not entirely talentless. There's a hack element, for sure. Same with Bowie. I still bet Transformer is better than most albums you claim to like.

I'm dying on the inside.

how exactly is he a hack? he was a major part of the VU and his solo career was very good.

and then he made Lulu

>> No.47307521

>>47307503
lulu wasn't that bad, not great but unfairly vilified by people who heard a few soundbites.

>> No.47307591

>>47307465
Depends who you're comparing him to or how high you're setting the bar I guess. I don't really think he's a hack, but the appeal of Velvet Underground's music was more about the trappings than the actual music.

>> No.47307633

i completely disagree about the VU. personally I don't care about their influence or personalities. they made 4 great albums which i enjoy immensely and plenty of high quality out-takes.

Oh my god. I've seen some shitty posts on /mu/, but this takes the shitty cake.
If you don't get the Velvets that's OK, and you can come out and say it if you want, but actually suggesting that countless bands and scenes were inspired by "the trappings" is just moronic.

Lurk more. Velvet Underground were not genius composers. They had a lot of great songs, but the main appeal of their music was about subversion.

>> No.47308216

>>47308126
I never said they were "genius composers". Their best song has about 3 minutes of composition and 14 or so of improvisation.

The subversion thing, maybe. Probably not. If the lyrics were bad then you'd be right, but Heroin or Venus in Furs or Waiting for The Man are all great lyrics and great songs, so the fact that they happen to be subversive is sort of irrelevant.

Also a load of their best songs like the whole third and fourth album and about three quarters of the first isn't at all edgy.

sup guys?

>> No.47308258

I don't mind how hard he fell off because he released Transformer, Berlin, and helped release four of some of the greatest albums of all time.

>> No.47308292

Just a perfect thread...

>> No.47308307

>>47308258
Why do folks round here never give any love to Street Hassle, Blue Mask or New York? He didn't really "fall off", or at least who wouldn't after being in the Velvets?

>> No.47308347

>>47307591
less the trappings and more the traps amirite?

>> No.47308388

>>47308045
He's right though. There's some interesting songwriting but VU can't play their instruments for shit.

probably because they haven't heard them or even heard of them. Songs for Drella is also great and he released one of his best solo albums in 2000.
