Because I posted it last thread.

The new Mourning Dawn album is out, I am super excited as it is a double disc album. 2 hours of probably the best mix of doom and black metal out there. I love their sound.

Im not stating things like they are facts. in fact i very often put the pharse "in my opinion" before stating my opinion about a certain things.

And give me one example when i was whiny when someone disagree with me about something. i allways respect differing opinions espicially when they are about something as subjective as music. i accept opinions of others regardless of how diffrent they are from mine, unless its an opinion that is morally wrong (like "all jews should die" or something like that).

I may not be as knowledgeable at metal as many other people in this thread are, but im willing to learn.

I don't even listen to atmoblack stuff. I know way less of it than you probably do. But metal has always had bizarrely divergent intents and aesthetics.

Scandinavian black metal from the 90's? some really cringey aesthetics and attitudes. Power metal? I can't figure out if this is serious or like an big comic-con ironic joke. Progressive metal? take the most pretentious aspects of prog rock and then mix them half assed with metal aspects. Doom is ok, but I can't figure out how you listen to more than a few albums.

I mostly listen to just death and melodeath but i don't pretend that aesthetic has been the entirety of metal.

Eh- I think metal largely was pretty consistent in terms of atmosphere and aesthetics before, say, 93. Sure there was a difference between Bathory's Under the Sign and Saint Vitus' Hallow's Victim, but I would consider the gap between Under the Sign and Sunbather far larger, two albums that are both touted as "black metal." There were some outliers of course, but I'm talking about in general.

Which isn't a dig against pre 93 metal, it's the exact opposite.

(I chose 93 because that's the first year I can think of more than one album that qualified as an "outlier" came out- those being Nespithe, Transcendence Into the Peripheral, and probably one or two more.)

Not to say I don't like any death metal, but the few I do like are fairly atmospheric or melodic anyway. Those big American death metal bands are just very bland to my ears. There's music, there's some riffs and some drums. There's nothing to make a personal connection with.

I'm maybe going to make a progressive and/or fusion death chart. I'll list groups, tell me if you don't think they belong in it, or give groups that can fit this chart.
*Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
*Cynic - Focus
*Death - Human or ITP
*Gorguts - Obscura
*Morbid Angel - Altar of Madness or Blessed are the Sick
*Necrophagist - Which one?
*Nocturnus - The Key
*Pestilence - Spheres
*Coprofago - Genesis
*Edge of Sanity - Crimson
*Martyr - Hopeless Hopes
*Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve

After this, I don't know if it really fits:
*Blotted Science - Machinations of Dementia
*Carcariass - Killing Process
*Celtic Frost - Into the Pandemonium (the most avant garde one)
*Gojira - Terra Incognita

I don't think any of the four on the bottom deserve to be on for varying reasons, but I also think Meshuggah is a bit iffy- though DEI is the most death metal they've been.

As for Necrophagist I'm not a fan of them but I prefer Onset of Putrefaction.

The Morbid Angel choice is easy- Altars isn't progressive at all.

I could complain some of hte bands/albums on there sucking, but I'll refrain.

Also suggesting:

!TOOH! - Rad a Trest
Ulcerate - Everything Is Fire
The Chasm - Deathcult For Eternity

And although they're not progressive in the sense the rest of the albums are, progressive in atmosphere and weird riffage:

Immolation - Here In After
Demilich - Nespithe

Yeah but if you're including tech death then why isn't there any Fallujah, Ulcerate or Nile?

In terms of technicality, brutality and wank Necrophagist might be better but overall Obscura is clearly superior. Not that I like either, I'm just saying.

>> No.47272003

>>47271972
Why do you keep confusing opinions and fact? Here's another opinion : Obscura is more melodic but rhythmically inferior. And because the three first you mentionned aren't good enough to be in a small chart (well, Nile and Ulcerate could).

Also I feel pure tech death doesn't really fit the purpose of the chart. You could start adding Suffocation etc as well then. I think the focus should stay in progressive/experimental (kinda) bands if you're going to make a chart like this. We've got enough other charts with tech-death on them.

Why would you do that? Obscura (album) is probably the essence of the entire chart.
It being a prog chart is also why I suggested Obscura (band) instead of Necrophagist.

Also if we're going prog/fusion I say TSOP instead of Human/ITP, cut Morbid Angel.

And seriously, take FMTS. I'm sure you and one other guy are the only people to prefer TI over it. Definitely add it too, essential prog death.

Not too keen on them but is The Key really prog or fusion? Far as I know it's slightly technical old-school death with a bit of a spacey feel.

If I keep it prog/fusion, neither Necrophagist nor Obscura can be included.
I feel like ITP fits more the prog/fusion drumming, but TSOP is a reasonable choice too.
Blessed are The Sick from Morbid could really fit.
While FMTS is good, it's really less experimental than TI. No 1990 trillion de Tonnes, no ambiance and the album structure is more conceptual in TI.
I agree, maybe the Key isn't fit for this chat. Current idea.

*Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
*Cynic - Focus
*Death - ITP or TSOP
*Gorguts - Obscura
*Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick
*Nocturnus - The Key ???
*Pestilence - Spheres
*Coprofago - Genesis
*Edge of Sanity - Crimson
*Martyr - Hopeless Hopes
*Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve (after this one, they spawned their own genre)
*Dysrhythmia - Contradiction
*Aghora - Aghora

After this, I don't know if it really fits:
*Celtic Frost - Into the Pandemonium (the most avant garde one)
*Gojira - Terra Incognita (the most progressive one in term of album structure and ambiance)

Maybe because they experienced with many things on it before. Anyway, if you're going to add a Gojira album it's gonna have to be that one. It's widely and by far considered their best, and not that different from TI stylistically. Unless you want a load of ">not FMTS" posts of course.

I haven't heard those CF, Coprofago, Martyr, Dysrhythmia or Aghora albums either so you're going to have to ask for a second opinion on those.

Suggesting Opeth. I'm not the biggest fan either, but it is essential prog death, like it or not.

Ok for TSOP instead of ITP.
Ok for no Morbid.
Still not okay for FMTS instead of TI. The point is that I think in albums more than bands. TI fits more the prog/fusion chart than FMTS. And yes they're really different. There was TI and TL then the rest. They were clearly rhytmically influenced by Necrophagist with those two.

I don't think Opeth is death enough to fit. When they started being more prog, they started being less death.

Take an early album obviously. Those aren't much less death than EoS, which is why I mentioned that in my first post.

Also I feel like you should expand the chart with general "experimental" stuff. Like Portal and Obscura (album). Experimental does kind of go hand in hand or side by side with prog.
