This is one of the most brilliant jazz pieces I've heard in years. Probably my favorite jazz trio.

>> No.47103751

I really don't like nujazz at all. I have listened to a couple albums JTG's posted but I find them to be as annoying as Kenny G. There's something about the tame playing and the silly production that gets to me. I love some of the european jazz scene like Fire! or Hera but everything else is just not my cup of tea. I did like Charles Gayle Trio's Streets however. That was a great record.

nu jazz is basically the same as smooth jazz. Lots of backbeat, synth sounds, electronic instruments. Some people say smooth/nu jazz is a bad term and it should just be called instrumental R & B. Stuff like Chris Potter is just modern jazz mostly. Some call it post-bop.

>> No.47105888

>>47105720
No but it doesn't sound like nu jazz to me either.

Sounds to me like our definitions are different. Nu jazz isn't just jazz with electric instruments to me. I've always heard that nu jazz and smooth jazz were pretty interchangeable. I think that younger nu-jazz artists just started using that term because of the negative association with the term smooth jazz.

try some classics from different genres and see what you like best

>> No.47106063

>>47105972
I mean really there isn't any "proper" terming. Good musicians make their music without trying to fit into a certain genre. That's why I usually don't like to waste too much time arguing about labels for music. Labels can help to a certain extent when it comes to recommendations and discussion but it seems like a silly thing to argue about.

47106068

How about a label discussion? Of these golden age labels which one do you like best and what is your favorite album from each? These are my favorites:
Atlantic
>John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
Blue Note
>Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch!
Columbia
>Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
CTI
>Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay
Impulse!
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Riverside
>Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - Caravan
Verve
>Dizzy Gillespie - At Newport

I like them all but my favorite as far as recording quality and the style of jazz the label put out would have to be Impulse! since I really dig the free jazz and avant-garde jazz movement as well as who was recording during the time (Gil Evans, Mingus, Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, Shelly Manne).

Pic related: what I'm listening to.
