So, I've recently discovered Einstürzende Neubauten. This album was the first one I've listened to, and it's really great! I'm currently checking out Zeichnungen Des Patienten O.T., but I think it's less than 1/2 Mensch. Which of their albums do you think I should check out/are as good or better than 1/2 Mensch?

wow what a coincidence I was just listening to that album around a few mins ago
Anyways Haus Der Luge and Kollaps are also pretty good as well

Okay, I'll check those out later! I really dig their grindy industrial sound.

haus der luege is more listenable than kollaps, although i'd reckon both of them are are equally good
some of their later albums are cool too, like grundstueck and silence is sexy. they sort of follow on from haus der luege

Everything they did up until Tabula Rasa (included) is worth a listen in my opinion.

Kollaps, Kalte Sterne — very raw
Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T. — their darkest and most disturbing
Halber Mensch — their most "dramatic", still very dark
Fünf auf der nach oben offenen Richterskala — less aggressive, no outbursts but a lot of tension
Haus der Lüge — their most varied, lots of energy and styles they've only tried here
Tabula Rasa — very accessible and melodic, no longer really industrial but
Ende Neu — various experiments, no longer industrial at all; not as good as their previous efforts
Silence Is Sexy + subsequent albums — mellow and melancholic, art pop, every album sounds a bit the same

My favourite is Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T., followed by Fünf auf der nach oben offenen Richterskala and Haus der Lüge.

I was planning to make a "how to get into Einstürzende Neubauten" chart actually, although I'm a bit biaised because I don't like the most recent albums as much.

There's a Halber Mensch movie by the way:

It's pretty good, although I wish they had kept the same tracklist as the album. Contains some disturbing imagery at times.

i recently listened to this band and i like it a lot. but what are their lyrics about? i don't get them. or what's the meaning behind their albums? sorry i'm sounding like an idiot.

OP here. I've only completed 1/2 Mensch, so I can't really speak for the other albums, but I saw it is a lot about freedom, desire, and the soul/spirit.

Thanks man, this is really helpful!

They often talk about cities, desires, civilization, but it's hard to make generalizations. You can read the original lyrics on http://neubauten.org along with the English translations.

Their early albums were more about destruction and tormented souls (Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T. was inspired by the drawing of a mental patient, plus lots of tracks on the album are somehow related to fire and burning); around 1990 they wrote more about allegories and enigmas, and their latest records are more about melancholy and everyday things.

Also:
>It can be interesting to draw parallels between the history of Berlin and the history of the band; living and playing in a divided, enclosed city in a climate of cold war certainly had an impact on the band’s sound and inspirations… which also changed accordingly when the Berlin wall came down.

Opinions on 1/2 Mensch itself?
