I can't get into Frank Zappa because of all the unfunny 'humor' he attaches to his music. Does he have any instrumental albums or at least semi-serious ones?

Songs like "Why Does It Burn When I Pee" aren't so hot.

Hot Rats is a pretty good instrumental album

Check out Weasels Ripped My Flesh if you want some really good experimental music.
Burnt Weeny Sandwich is mostly instrumental but I didn't think it was as good as WRMF

Freak out! is also fan favorite and not too satirical if I am remembering correctly.

Listen to The Mothers of Invention, all his good work was done then.

Or listen to Red Noise if you want to hear his toilet humor but in French. Or listen to European avant-prog of the 70's if you want to hear instrumental versions of his music (Komintern, Henry Cow, Etron fou Leloublan, etc.)

and op to awner your question I would sujest lumpy gravy, hot rats, Uncle Meat, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasels Ripped My Flesh and waka/jawaka to be great pieces of work with him with no comedy that I can remember of. though some of the mentioned work might be a bit weird for someone thats not used to him.

We're Only In It For The Money is a great example of him using satire and humor without sounding try-hard or immature. Outsider commentary on the hippie movement, both from the sides of the "free love" youth and the conservative adults of the time. Zappa's comedy had a lot more magic when he was performing with The Mothers of Invention.

Plus, WOIIFTM is Zappa's best album.

My kid sister wrote a college application essay about "Who Needs the Peace Corps" and didn't realize the song was scathing satire. Lucky for her, I proofread it.

>> No.46912946

>>46912785
Agreed. Especially in the live performance environment, when he could interact with the rest of the band, as opposed to just resorting to silly lyrics and noises for laughs.

I like the throwaway references to jokes on other albums. Like,
>"Now, when the pony's mane starts to get good in the back..."

Listen to Hot Rats, Lumpy Gravy and then dig into his Mothers stuff, maybe listen to Waka/Jawaka too but that's basically his best work.

If you want any more then check out Captain Beefheart.

I'll admit I used to love his humour based stuff but after seeing some interviews of him he really does end up sounding like the angry atheist or whatever fedora toting pleb starts arguments for the sake of arguments.
