All the people 'cringing' about the crosleys and stacking records and touching the grooves are probably prroud owners of a collection full of used LPs that have been treated a lot worse in the past. Vinyl is durable and it's meant to be played, not some holy object never meant to be seen by the sun. Shitty record players have existed forever, and playing a record on a Crosley won't make it immediately worhless.

My stepfather bought himself an all-in-one turntable set even worse than a crosley. It's like a knockoff crosley they sold at target. He borrows records sometimes and them just shoves them somewhere random on the rack instead of putting it back in the right spot.

what I usually do when that happens is I play the record on my vinyl player and press on the needle on the scratched parts. with the force on the needle, it gets the groove back in it's original shape.

I always see re-ac-tor and some of the other 80's albums. I almost never see one of his really good albums. On occasion I see Harvest, and I saw After the Goldrush once too, but it's always in shit condition. I always check the Neil Young section whenever I'm in a store. another good way to fix it is to put the record on a radiator for a good 10 mnutes on the damaged side, then play that sie. The electromechanical memory of the tonearm makes it anticipate the movement if you aready played the vinyl once and because of that it can recreate the shape of the groove.
You will need to oil/grease your needle after that though.

Surface noise/crackles can add a certain charm if it's the right kind of old record. I've got a really cheap copy of The Dock of The Bay. It doesn't skip, but it crackles everywhere just does not sound clear at all even without the crackles. I love it though. Otis's voice comes through the fog, and it just sounds so sweet and sorrowful. But that's just for that one very specific case. Otherwise, I hate crackles and surface noise

Next time I go back to my dad's place, I'm going to have to take a look at what's left of his old collection. He's a huge Neil Young fan and is very good about taking care of his discs. He switched to CD's in the mid 90s, but still has some records. I meant to grab his copy of Darklands by The Jesus and Mary Chain last time I was there.

I also might just get copy of Everybody Knows This is Nowhere off discogs. You can get a decent copy for like $8. Some of his other records get really expensive though. How far did Harvest and After the Gold Rush set you back?

I disagree. It's a step above the $40 crosleys but the sound quality is subpar, no counter-balance and you can't change the cartridge. The LP-120 isn't much more and it's a million times better. If you're on a budget you can get a much better tt used.
