"Emo is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. It originated in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C., where it was known as “emotional hardcore” or “emocore” and pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace. As the style was echoed by contemporary American punk bands, its sound and meaning shifted and changed, blending with pop punk and indie rock and encapsulated in the early 1990s by groups such as Jawbreaker and Sunny Day Real Estate. By the mid 1990s numerous emo acts emerged from the Midwestern and Central United States, and several independent record labels began to specialize in the style.
...
In addition to music, “emo” is often used more generally to signify a particular relationship between fans and artists, and to describe related aspects of fashion, culture, and behavior."

It took me hours to research this.

nah breh, I googled it. Apperently there was an article p4k did on part of songs some of the guys there can't shake off their heads and someone posted a moment of that song there, last year (6 years after the band was a thing mind you)

My emo-cred is still intact, I did panic a bit though, I didn't even know they were on p4k at some point.

btw, if anyone that's into I hate myself hasn't heard of Die Hoffnung check it out. It was a band the Marburger brothers were in post-IHM. This album got finally released last year (got recorded while they were still active circa 2005) but there was no buzz about it on here as far as I can remember. Not really a similar sound to IHM but it's still really good.

I feel like it's able to communicate a very limited set of emotions to a wide variety of people. The themes introduced in the album are never thoroughly developed, or even brought to a satisfying conclusion. There was no great catharsis in the album for me, yet the album was structured in such a way as to suggest a build up to a climax, and yet, I was never allowed to expirience any kind of resolution. I'm not asking for wide sweeping soundscapes, I just wanted a logical ending to themes that he introduced, and while the lack of resolution can sometimes be seen as the hallmark of an album, I feel like this wasn't the case.

I do use my ears,. The vocal delivery isn't particulary emotive, and the song structures are more typical of "garage rock". This is one of my favourite albums of all time, but I wouldn't say it's emo. Merchant Ships, the feels are pretty relative to what I went through as a kid, so they'll always have a special place in my heart.

I feel like the revival is the same as any other new wave of music. there are a lot of shit bands, and a few hidden gems, the shit is just the most prominent. I think a few small sect of musicians will continue to tweak and lead the genre in new directions, while other's derive from them, which isn't really a bad thing, it's just too much derivarity is bad

And you friend?

I'm sorry if I spell things wrong, I'mmgetting a little drunk now.

It's ok man, nice dubs.

Algernon is probably my favorite, I've only listened to them for the past year but it's crazy how much shit I got to experience while listening to them, good times and bad. I agree on what you said though, there's gonna be a few bands that just pop up (i.e. TWIABP, if you wanna count that) and will be received pretty positively, thus influencing a lot more people to have their own take on the genre. It's a lot bigger now than I remember it a few years ago. Just hope it doesn't just burn out like chillwave/vaporwave and all those other sub-genres

I doubt we're gonna to return to how it was in 2005-2010 again. those were rough years for emo. But yeah, I'm hyped as fuck, even if I don't like some stuff some popular bands are doing, I'm just happy to see an interest in the genre

Does anyone remember Student Rick? They were a poppy midwest emo band from the late 90's-early 00's from South Bend, IN. They started getting kind of big, and it seemed they were going to ride the wave of pop-punk and emo hitting the masses, until they broke up after the release of their first full length album Soundtrack for a Generation.

I'm trying to upload their demo EP (I like their earlier sound better) but mega is being uncooperative.
