I've listened to Venom but they sounded just like thrash/speed stuff to me, i know it's first wave and maybe the most influential band but it still sounded a little goofy to me.
Bathory is another story. I've listened to Under The Sign of the Black Mark some hours ago and holy shit my mind was blown away.

Venom are 80s black metal as are Hellhammer, Sodom, Destruction, NME, and Bathory.
Sure they aren't GRYMKVLTWINTERCORPSEPAINTNORSE-core but they were the most extreme and evil out of NWOBHM even if they seem a bit silly.

Hellhammer took Venom's groundwork for newborn extreme heavy metal and slowed it down and made it HEAVIER and more EVIL sounding. They were a pretty big influence on early death metal too and for good reason.
Sodom on the other hand (was) a pure Venom worship act but sounded incredibly fucking evil while also simplifying the riffs, more in common with thrash than pure speed metal.
Bathory did their own thing and it had the greatest impact on the second wave norwegian black metal.

Right now I'm on a Katharsis kick. Most people seem to like 666 the best, but VVorld VVithout End just fucking kills it for me. You can't go wrong with either, though. Raw, relentless and satanic.

OP, Inquisition is a must if you want to get into black metal. It's not quite as raw as the stuff you've been enjoying thus far, but the riffs are peerless in my opinion. You may have trouble getting past the stilly "Popeye the Sailor" vocals, though.

Yeah, I felt the same way. I listened to the entire song but everytime the vocals came in it was like being stabbed repeated in my eardrum with needles. They're so clear and loud that I could not possibly ignore them. The vocals should at least be buried in the mix, if they really need to do that. Mortuary Drape, Rotting Christ, Varathron, Necromantia and early Moonspell have a warmer, more occult-oriented atmosphere than the grim and frostbitten one of norse BM, I enjoy it a lot.
Swedish black/death à la Dissection, Necrophobic, Sacramentum and similar is GOAT too.

I still love the album but that's my complaint with it I guess, the production is also a bit too shiny, but despite that I love it.

The vocals in that Drowning the Light song are incredible. I don't like the way those hi-hats are mixed though.. fuck I just realized how picky I am with my BM (and music in general) nowadays, haha.

and that 'Teens' song is not what I expected, those vocals are funny but somewhat unsettling at the same time, haha.

The only ones that stuck with me through my black metal adventures in high school are Destroyer 666 (Florida, US) and Wolven Ancestry (Canadaland).

Then I went DOOM and never came back.

Black Metal doesn't get any better than Taake and Anorexia Nervosa.
