I'll admit I'm not particularly well versed in classical music, but what's with everyone's hate-boner for this guy?
not all of us are communists
I don't hate him, I just find much of his music terribly bland. Not that this is a mark against his music in itself, but I have had problematic encounters with his fans as well; many of them attempt to defend his music against any criticism by citing irrelevant extramusical information. Someone tried to convince me that one of his concerti was a portrait of Stalin, as if, even if it was remotely possible, that would make it any less boring to sit through.

>>44885032Too accessible and emotional.Trve classical has to be calculated and difficult.
>>44885032I like his music.
>>44885210>A new perspective or better understanding of context couldn't possibly help me appreciate music.Lol, this guy. I'm not a huge Shosta fan, but to answer your question OP, Classical folks on /mu/ love to hate straightforward, dramatic composers, because they feel like unless music requires breakdown and analysis to enjoy, then it's not real music.

>>44885587/mu/ hates Stockhausen too
>>44885032Shostakovich is an excellent composer. Once you understand his life and the stress he lived with under Stalin, you can see how it shaped his music, especially the stuff he wrote for public display (Symphonies etc.)The music he wrote "For the Drawer" I find to be the best, mostly his string quartets. He wrote them knowing they probably wouldn't get performed... just put in his drawer. Its good stuff, but can take a couple of listens. He can be very bleak and emotionless...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m5ohobcKb8
