I've heard that argument before. There's a certain school of thought in musicology that would agree with you. Just like there is a certain school of thought that lists Beethoven as the greatest composer ever. I'm not entirely sold on either of those, but the argument is there. It is a fun piece either way, have you seen the video on youtube that tries to replicate the original choreography? The quality isn't great, but its worth a viewing.

What recordings have you heard? I tend to agree with a friend of mine that the original Stravinsky/Craft recordings are not so good. For my money, Volkov's disc of the piano and orchestra works is good, and Knussen's disc with Canticles, Variations and The Flood is good too. Unfortunately I haven't found any others.

>> No.44890705

Tchaik isn't always to everyone's tastes. I think most of the /classical/ dislike of Tchaik comes from a noted tripfag who shall remain nameless. That said, Tchaikovsky is pretty far from the Classical period emphasis on clarity of form, the phrases go on forever, and when you turn the page in a symphony its the exact same as the page you were just on. I think the whole firetruck-bullshit is fairly relevant. He can be pretty repetitive at times. All that aside, I do like Tchaikovsky for the melodic lines and awesome wind parts, but that isn't enough for a lot of people.

That's a reasoned critique that I can dig. I've been listening to a Swan Lake recording and I find it very enjoyable.
