Hey mu, I asked yesterday about introductory metal, some shit was decent, some wasn't.

When you mentioned your favourites however, it had a very dark sound (not the theme, that is ok), I mean dark as in bassy.

Do you have more trebble oriented /mu/core metal?

That album is a great start then. If you're looking for trebly music, you'll want to look at thrash metal. Very well know for turning treble up to 10 on amps and then cutting the mids. Some people find it annoying, but I really like the 80's thrash guitar tone.

Avoid stoner and doom if you dont like anything too bassy.

ew so he got around to reviewing it. So as a person who usually reserves themselves to kvlt shit this was surprisingly tolerable. Much less bombast than I'd expect, even a few nice moments. A less offensively overt approach to songwriting apparently translates to mature development, at least when they don't have those absolutely obnoxious fucking blast-beats up front. Feels informed of orthodox stuff too which is interesting I guess. It's at least a step up from the other shit.

It was a bit of a structural mess, You shined in the thrashier/groovier parts of the track but would often shift into a segment that seemed completely out of place. I wasn't a fan of the guitar tone but I think that also falls in line with my previous criticism, a shorter, simpler track would really be the better way to go in my opinion. A big problem with a lot of up and comers is that they try to be too ambitious with their writing and try to incorporate too many different influences at once making a mess.

I agree. I could see what they were trying to do with Apnoe. Yeah it was great, it was a new direction and it worked but, it wasn't concrete like Angst was. The best track on Apnoe was Soil, I think. The bass during the chorus and the male vox in the vocal harmony was beautiful but, there was something that Angst had that Apnoe doesn't. As for their first two albums, all I know is they're just standard black metal

I don't like the production very much, are the drums programmed? I would try another guitar sound as well.

Like others said, the riffs are cool and everything. but the song is a bit too complicated. Like after the first fast part, it gets slow again. I think it would feel more natural to do some kind of interlude and then go back to another fast verse or something. So my advice would be to think simpler.

I have the same problem myself while writing songs, once I have one part, i always hesitate to go back to it. It feels like it would be too repetetive. But in the end, it makes my songs sound disjointed. So i'm working on that as well. Not putting too many different things into the same song.

It's not the music I'm trying to show here. It's the pdf file e-book. The CD comes with a 218 page book! The book is called Tales of the Verse and it's a collaboration to the album, parts of the story and characters that don't get mentioned in the CD. Does anyone like a read?
The album's ok, sorta like Todtgelichter (that'll keep you amused >>44265559), Mastodon, Cult of Luna and Opeth-esque.

This is quite different from their previous material. This album doesn't have a single fast part to it. It is straight through just damn heavy, slow to mid-tempo stuff with lots of signature orthodox dissonant arpeggios.

Could compare it somewhat to Terra Tenebrosa, except much heavier.

Hunter was all kinds of bad. However, the last track was amazing.
I dunno Baroness did the same thing with Yellow Green but, that didn't suck to Hell though. Green had its iffy points but it was leagues better than The Hunter.
I think Mastodon will either quit or revert to Crack the Skye feel, as much as I hate when bands do this "we're going back to our roots" thing.

New record is apparently going to sound more like Blood Mountain, so that's definitely a good sign if you're into that sound or level of "heaviness" (providing that the statement proves to be accurate).

I sure do hope it doesn't end up just being a clone of Blood Mountain, though Mastodon isn't known for releasing the same record twice (unlike, say, Slayer).

He said it was going to be "heavier" than Heritage but not "Death metal heavy".. so I wouldn't bet on the record sound like Damnation. I agree that it'd be better for it to sound like Damnation, since I tend to approach metal as an all or nothing type genre nowadays. I completely understand. If it's metal start to finish, then it's a no go album. However, if it's a metal album with elements of other things, it won't get lost in all that tedium. If it's half metal, half acoustic, it's approachable. Even if it's 80% metal and 20% other. It's still ok. It's just this whole ALL metal thing is a bit too much. I think I need more than one type of vocals now on album. If it's all the same sort of scream start to finish, I still feel a little iffy about it. It needs a balance.
