Well, it is. But the year is just a few bytes as opposed to at least a few, or possibly even at the worst case dozens of megabytes. It's not about principle, but practicality. Also between tracks there almost always are some differences in the common text based metadata so it makes sense to have it embedded within the files. You could of course have a separate file for the data common to the files (like year), but that wouldn't again be very practical not to mention somewhat inconsistent.

I'm opposed to the idea because it's supposed to be a torrent tracker. As said meta/help/announcements/etc sections are fine because those are tracker specific (as is the IRC pretty much which is why I have nothing against it). The project was supposed to be a torrent tracker and that's it, so why append any more functionality to it unless you want to change the whole roadmap of the site's purpose. The site was created to fill a need within the ocmmunity. An additional community forum adds nothing to filling that need.

It is a necessity though, a tracker won't last very long if it's COMMUNITY (to explain that means people within the tracker since you haven't been able to pick up on that) can't COMMUNICATE with eachother. Even if it's about stuff not directly related to the tracker.

Sorry but I don't see that correlation. If anything I'd say it's better that the the tracker remains as closely affiliated with /mu/ (as in this board) as possible, and keeping it relevant here in the board, and having as much of this BOARDS's userbase as possible being able to use the tracker. /mu/ is already a (somewhat, to an extent...) functioning community. It's stupid to try to construct and upkeep another community, because if choose to go by that route and then fail at it, THAT will lead to the tracker's downfall if anything. The number one non-trivial key to keeping the tracker alive is to keep it relevant within the backbone community.
