What are your honest thoughts on RHCP /mu/?
You can't say the musicians in the band aren't extremely talented in their own right, except for Anthony.
Plus BSSM and anything before that is god-tier.
I always see them shat on, on here and I can't help but wonder why.

>> No.42731548

I don't dislike RHCP

I like some of Stadium Arcadium but the least disliked album here is blood/suger/sex/magic

I think the main criticism is that they are popular.

I think so too.
If they were still as big as they were in the mid 80's /mu/ would be all over them

the "main criticism" is that they are fucking boring as hell and no album or even song of theirs is worth listening to more than twice

The best thing that came out of RHCP was Kiedis' autobiography.
BSSM was the soundtrack to my being 12 years old so I can take it or leave it, and 'under the bridge' is an anthem, but otherwise. Eh.

I never really liked them.

It's just a preference thing. I appreciate that there are some cream-worthy riffs and general nice guitar work but I've never really enjoyed their music because it's so generic.

>You can't say the musicians in the band aren't extremely talented in their own right
Yes I can.

Flea is an obnoxious gimmick bassist who has fucked up an entire generation of bassists. I know a dozen bassists who can slap perfectly but can't lock up with a drummer to save their life.

Frus is a sloppy Hendrix/Hazel clone that has done nothing remotely innovative or compelling. His junkie backstory and cheesy facial expressions are the only reasons people think of him as soulful and passionate.

Will Ferrell is a hilarious comedian, but an unremarkable drummer.

>>42732253
Flea is responsible for your friends' lack of rhythm? I don't even like RHCP or even his style but surely it's a good thing he's inspired people to learn to slap and pop.

>but surely it's a good thing he's inspired people to learn to slap and pop
No, it's not. Slap and pop is a fine technique if it's used tastefully (it's usually not, especially in rock music), but many young bassists are distracted by the flashiness of it that they don't focus on fundamentals.

This isn't just "my friends" I'm talking about. I'm a working musician who sees/performs with bands at least 3-4 times a week, and younger, ambitious bassists who incorporate slapping are almost always unaware of the kick drum and the overall groove. And once they finally learn to lock in, the slapping and popping decreases significantly, if not entirely.

Explain the innovation I'm missing out on here.

>> No.42732705

It's hard for me to like RHCP. I have just never been able to get into a full album of theirs. I think they have good ideas, and that when they do they run with them and make something great. When they don't have a good idea, they're awful. I mean really bad, trying desperately to get ahold of a groove that isn't boring and shallow. I'm not that interested in most of their subject matter either.

>> No.42732872

>>42732658
So you admit it's compelling?
Innovative? Maybe not, but it sure as hell is good and for the most part unique.
