Go to school.
Spend the rest of your life paying it off.
It's worth it to work with music though.

What is the difference between mastering and equing?

What genres do you work the most?

I want to get into producing. If I don't have a pair of studio monitors, would a pair of good quality vintage speakers with a fairly "flat" sound do the job?

They're not similar at all. Mastering is a technique, eqing is a tool. Google it, son.

how much school did you have to go through to get where you're at? what kind of music do you work on? do you get a big "break" at some point in your career and work with a big musician or is it all chance? What's your yearly income?

i'm looking into this as a career anon i would appreciate it so much if you could give me some basic info on how you got to where you're at

Buddy, they have NOTHING to do with each other. An engineer with EQ as part of the mix. After the mixing stage, you send it to mastering, who work on really fine tuning dynamics. Like these are two COMPLETELY different things.

>>41902998

yeah, I'd rather have a vox too. this is what we ended up with after some sketchy craigslisting.

Dude, I'm poor. I went to an expensive private recording school, and it's given me connections to get enough work to pay some bills. I'm waiting for that big break. I'm making about 2-3 thousand a month. I went to school for three years, but some people go for more or less.

okay thanks for the info man. i hope you get that break, keep working at it i'm sure it'll come to you.

did you go to a recording school just because richfag or is that the only way to go for sound engineering? are you aware of good programs in the traditional college route?

Seeing as how you're from Canada and went to Private Schooling for your education, would you say it was for the best?

There's the RTA program in Toronto, which I'm sure you're aware of, and I was planning on going to that for Sound Engineering as well. The program looks like a mixed bag and you can kind of branch off into what you're interested in. I've always got Metalworks near me but its expensive as fuck and apparently the grading system is horrible.

tl;dr
Was going to a private college that was expensive beneficial? Is RTA worth it?

>> No.41903183

>>41903094
Yes I'm constantly working, bringing projects into a different studios mostly.
>>41903113
I went on student loans, I'm working to pay off. The cost was like 25 grand.
I know of schools in Vancouver, not really anywhere else.
>>41903129
I mostly work rock (these days mostly post-punk and "Indie", although I've gotten a couple blues-rock jobs recently which was sweet), I also do some hip hop, because I have lots of backround in that.
Any decent speakers and a good pair of headphones are usually fine. Make sure it sounds sweet out of both.

>> No.41903205

>>41903154
RTA is pretty shitty, I wouldn't go there. Schools in Toronto in general suck. Go to Montreal if you can speak French or Vancouver. It was definitely worth it for me, it's responsible for 100% of my income.

>> No.41903300

>>41903205
Fuck man. I don't know where else to go other than RTA. I haven't really looked too far though, to be fair. What's shitty about it? I haven't really heard much about it.
