I'm a Sound Engineer.AMAAlso general engineering thread
is it hard living off 12k a year?
HOW DO I DO IT?
>>41902781
be realis it just a little too late? does it matter anyway?
>>41902781Yes, very hard.>>41902807Sound engineers are used all the time, of course it matters. Are you actually retarded?
>>41902798Go to school.Spend the rest of your life paying it off. It's worth it to work with music though.
sound engineer hereclearly making more than $12k
Chemical Engineer hereDo you really think you deserve to be called an engineer
>>41902880Why do you have a shower in your living room
>>41902880>shitty $300 a month studio apartment>$300 for basic living expensesBoom, $5000 dollars for your audio equipment
What is the difference between mastering and equing? What genres do you work the most?I want to get into producing. If I don't have a pair of studio monitors, would a pair of good quality vintage speakers with a fairly "flat" sound do the job?
>>41902909top lel
>>41902880Sweet rig, I wish I had it. I only have nice shit at work. My home rig is so bad.>>41902883No, but it's hilarious and I love it. Some sound engineers deserve it though.
>>41902883What do chemicals have to do with engines?
>>41902910>300 a monthwhat shit hole city do you love in?
>>41902922>What's the difference between mastering and eqingThey're not similar at all. Mastering is a technique, eqing is a tool. Google it, son.
>>41902940>paying more than $500 a month for a studiowhat overpriced shithole do you live in?
>>41902956not one in a square state
>>41902956Vancouver ;(
>>41902909learn2balcony
>>41902973Van is SO over priced these days holy shit
>>41902954well you see, I've googled it and I've asked /mu/ before and I have never ever been given a concrete answer (although I know, to a point, what both of those processed involve and what their end results are)...
>>41902975Why is your shower outdoors.
>>41902975I have a buddy with that Orange amp. I didn't really like it though, I prefer a mini Vox. He loves it though, and he's a better guitar player than I.
>>41902973ma nigga. 604fag. I'm not too far from ya! Just resting in the lower mainland
>>41902935Engines run on chemicals.
>>41902666how much school did you have to go through to get where you're at? what kind of music do you work on? do you get a big "break" at some point in your career and work with a big musician or is it all chance? What's your yearly income? i'm looking into this as a career anon i would appreciate it so much if you could give me some basic info on how you got to where you're at
enclosed vocal booth under stairs.mic is a tlm 103.
>>41902988Buddy, they have NOTHING to do with each other. An engineer with EQ as part of the mix. After the mixing stage, you send it to mastering, who work on really fine tuning dynamics. Like these are two COMPLETELY different things.
>>41902998yeah, I'd rather have a vox too. this is what we ended up with after some sketchy craigslisting.
>>41903028where did I imply they had to do anything with each other.....
>>41903011Dude, I'm poor. I went to an expensive private recording school, and it's given me connections to get enough work to pay some bills. I'm waiting for that big break. I'm making about 2-3 thousand a month. I went to school for three years, but some people go for more or less.
>>41903060>What is the difference between mastering and equing? You asked for the difference, implying there's similarities.
>>41903061What's your main source of income? Are you constantly working with sound engineering?
>>41903061okay thanks for the info man. i hope you get that break, keep working at it i'm sure it'll come to you. did you go to a recording school just because richfag or is that the only way to go for sound engineering? are you aware of good programs in the traditional college route?
>>41903079well fuck then. Now are we gonna keep discussing semantics or can you even answer these?>What genres do you work the most?>I want to get into producing. If I don't have a pair of studio monitors, would a pair of good quality vintage speakers with a fairly "flat" sound do the job?You sound bitchy, are you Vlado Meller?
>>41903079Asking for the difference between two things only implies a difference.English not your first language?
>>41903061Seeing as how you're from Canada and went to Private Schooling for your education, would you say it was for the best? There's the RTA program in Toronto, which I'm sure you're aware of, and I was planning on going to that for Sound Engineering as well. The program looks like a mixed bag and you can kind of branch off into what you're interested in. I've always got Metalworks near me but its expensive as fuck and apparently the grading system is horrible.tl;drWas going to a private college that was expensive beneficial? Is RTA worth it?
>>41903094Yes I'm constantly working, bringing projects into a different studios mostly.>>41903113I went on student loans, I'm working to pay off. The cost was like 25 grand.I know of schools in Vancouver, not really anywhere else.>>41903129I mostly work rock (these days mostly post-punk and "Indie", although I've gotten a couple blues-rock jobs recently which was sweet), I also do some hip hop, because I have lots of backround in that.Any decent speakers and a good pair of headphones are usually fine. Make sure it sounds sweet out of both.
>>41903154RTA is pretty shitty, I wouldn't go there. Schools in Toronto in general suck. Go to Montreal if you can speak French or Vancouver. It was definitely worth it for me, it's responsible for 100% of my income.
>>41903205Fuck man. I don't know where else to go other than RTA. I haven't really looked too far though, to be fair. What's shitty about it? I haven't really heard much about it.
>>41903300Heard much as in no one really talks ABOUT it, they just mention it.
